  5.       WINDOWS NT AND MICROSOFT WINDOWS NETWORKING
  6.  
  7.  
  8. This document describes how to configure the 3C589D PC Card for
  9. use with Windows NT v3.51 and v4.0 (Server or Workstation) and 
  10. Microsoft Windows Networks.
  11.  
  12. If you have Windows NT v3.50 or earlier, you will need to
  13. upgrade your system to v3.51 or later. Versions prior to 
  14. Windows NT v3.51 do not have PC Card support, and therefore
  15. do not support the 3C589D PC Card.
  16.  
  17. NOTE: The following instructions assume that you have not 
  18.       installed any other network adapter in the machine. 
  19.       If you have been using a network connection on your
  20.       computer, some of the following instructions may not
  21.       apply or may produce different results.  Refer with
  22.       your MIS department for instructions.
  23.  
  24. Before installing the network driver, you should know the
  25. following:
  26.  
  27.       -Transport used in the Microsoft Windows Network
  28.       -Name of the NT Server domain or Windows 95/WFW 3.11
  29.        Workgroup to which you belong.
  30.  
  31. Also, for a successful installation, you will need:
  32.  
  33.       - Windows NT system installation files (either on
  34.         hard disk, floppy diskettes, or CD)
  35.       - 3C589D LAN PC Card and the accompanying EtherDisk
  36.         diskette
  37.         
  38.  
  39. Installation instructions:
  40.  
  41.  1. Turn on the computer and log on.
  42.  
  43.  2. Go to the MAIN group and select the Control Panel icon.
  44.  
  45.  3. From the Control Panel, select the Network icon.
  46.  
  47.  4. When the system prompts:
  48.  
  49.     Windows NT Networking is not installed. Install it now?
  50.      Click YES.
  51.  
  52.  5. This opens the Windows NT Setup window. Be prepared to
  53.     enter the name of the drive or directory where your NT
  54.     system installation files reside. When ready, click
  55.     CONTINUE.
  56.  
  57.  6. Click DO NOT DETECT. Windows NT does not fully support
  58.     Plug and Play and cannot automatically detect the 
  59.     LAN PC Card.
  60.  
  61.  7. When the ADD NETWORK ADAPTER dialog box appears, it
  62.     displays a list of adapter names. Click the down arrow
  63.     until you can select:
  64.  
  65.         <Other> Requires disk from manufacturer
  66.  
  67.  8. When the list of adapters closes, click CONTINUE. This
  68.     opens the INSERT DISK dialog box and prompts you for 
  69.     the location of a driver file. The driver file is 
  70.     located on the EtherDisk in the \NDIS\WINNT35 directory.
  71.     Type the directory path, A:\NDIS\WINNT35 and click OK.
  72.  
  73. 9.  When the SELECT OEM OPTION window opens with a
  74.     description of the LAN PC Card, click OK. This opens
  75.     a dialog box called EtherLink III LAN PC Card
  76.     V1.50.
  77.  
  78. 10. Enter the settings for the LAN PC Card.  Since 
  79.     Windows NT currently does not support Plug and Play, you
  80.     must supply the appropriate settings for the PC Card. In 
  81.     most cases, the default settings will work, but if you
  82.     are unsure about what settings to use, ask your system
  83.     administrator or MIS department. When the settings are
  84.     entered, click OK to open the Windows NT Setup dialog 
  85.     box.
  86.  
  87. 11. In the Windows NT Setup dialog box, select the network
  88.     transport protocol that Windows NT will use. The TCP/IP
  89.     transport will already be selected for use. If you have
  90.     no specific reason to use TCP/IP, you may delete it now.
  91.  
  92.     In this dialog box, select the transport appropriate for
  93.     the network client. Most Microsoft NT networks use the
  94.     NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport. If you are not sure,
  95.     ask your system administrator or MIS department.
  96.  
  97.     When Windows NT Setup is complete, click OK to open the
  98.     Network Settings dialog box.
  99.  
  100. 12. Click CONTINUE to open the Windows NT Setup screen.
  101.     Supply the name of the drive or directory where your NT
  102.     system installation files reside and click CONTINUE.
  103.     This returns you to the Network Settings dialog box.
  104.                 
  105. 13. Click OK to open the NW Link IPX/SPX Protocol Configuration
  106.     dialog box. For most networks, AUTO DETECTED will work.
  107.     When done selecting the frame type, click OK.
  108.  
  109. 14. The next window is the Domain/Workgroup Settings window.
  110.     Select the appropriate domain or workgroup name for
  111.     Windows Networking and click OK.  (This name has nothing
  112.     to do with the Novell client.)
  113.  
  114. When these steps are complete, you must restart your PC.
  115. Remove the EtherDisk diskette from Drive A and click the
  116. Restart button.

  120. 3C589D Installation Steps for NT 4.0
  121.  
  122. 1.  Insert the 3C589D PC Card in the PC and connect the cable to the network.
  123.  
  124. 2.  Configure and test the adapter as follows.
  125.       a.  Do a clean DOS boot loading no network drivers on the adapter.
  126.       b.  Run INSTALL.EXE from the EtherDisk v5.3 or later.
  127.       c.  Using the arrow keys, select "Configuration and Diagnostic Program ...".
  128.       d.  Configure the adapter to non-conflicting settings and run the diagnostic test.
  129.       e.  Write down the successfully tested Interrupt and I/O Address settings for later use.
  130.       f.  Exit the program.
  131.  
  132. 3.  Boot NT 4.0.
  133.  
  134. 4.  Double-click on "My Computer".
  135.  
  136. 5.  Double-click on "Control Panel".
  137.  
  138. 6.  Double-click on "Devices".
  139.  
  140. 7.  Scroll down through the list of Devices and verify
  141.     the following configuration is defined.
  142.  
  143.     Device        Status    Startup
  144.     -----------    ----------    -----------
  145.     Pcmcia        Started    Boot
  146.  
  147. 8.  Close out of "Devices".
  148.  
  149. 9.  In Control Panel, double-click on "Network".
  150.  
  151. 10. Select the "Adapters" tab and click on "Add...".
  152.  
  153. 11. Click on the "Have Disk..." button.
  154.  
  155. 12. Enter the path "A:\", insert EtherDisk v5.3 or later 
  156.     in the A: drive, and then click on the OK button.
  157.  
  158. 13. From the "Select OEM Option" screen, highlight 
  159.     "3Com EtherLink III (3C589D) LAN PC Card" and then 
  160.     click on the OK button.
  161.  
  162. 14. Configure the I/O Port Address and the Interrupt 
  163.     Number to those from Step 2e above, and then click 
  164.     the OK button to save the settings.
  165.  
  166. 15. For Bus Type select "PCMCIA", and for Bus 
  167.     Number select "0".  Click the OK button to save.
  168.  
  169. 16. Click the OK button on the warning message 
  170.     "The current netcard parameters are not verifiably correct...".
  171.  
  172. 17. The 3C589D adapter and its driver have now 
  173.     been successfully installed in NT 4.0.  
  174.     After installing the needed Services and 
  175.     Protocols as described below, shut down 
  176.     NT and completely power down the machine prior to rebooting.
  177.  
  178. 18. In the Network area under Control Panel, 
  179.     click on the "Protocols" tab.
  180.  
  181. 19. Click on the "Add..." button and select 
  182.     "NetBEUI Protocol".  Click on the OK button to save.
  183.  
  184. 20. Click on the "Services" tab.
  185.  
  186. 21. Click on the "Add..." button and add in the 
  187.     following services.  (Computer Browser, Server and/or Workstation).
  188.  
  189. 22. Click on the "Close" button to exit the Network dialogue box.
  190.  
  191. 23. Shut down NT and completely power off the machine.
  192.  
  193. 24. Reboot the PC to activate the network.
