  4. Checkers is one of the world's oldest games. It has the intrigue 
  5. of chess but is simple enough for players of all ages. And like 
  6. chess, checkers is purely a game of skill-the best player always 
  7. wins. This software version of checkers can be played with two 
  8. people or against the computer. 
  9.  
  10. USAGE
  11. When you launch Checkers, you'll see a picture of a checkerboard, 
  12. set up for a new game, with program option controls along the right 
  13. edge. Under the label "Against:" you'll see two buttons. Click on 
  14. the button with a picture of a computer to play against the computer; 
  15. click on the button with a picture of a person to play against 
  16. a human opponent.

  18. Play is accomplished by dragging a checker to a new square using 
  19. the mouse. When you drag a checker, the cursor changes from 
  20. a standard pointing arrow to a hand that grasps the checker. 
  21. When you drag a checker to a square where it can legally land, 
  22. the grasping hand opens up, indicating you can drop the checker 
  23. there. If you attempt to drag a checker that cannot legally be 
  24. moved, the cursor remains an arrow and does not grasp the checker. 
  25. The inability to pick up a checker is the only clue that it is an 
  26. illegal move; there are no annoying beeps.

  28. Checkers keeps a record over sessions of the number of wins for 
  29. both the red and black checkers. You can clear this record back 
  30. to zero by clicking on the Clear button. You can quit Checkers 
  31. by either clicking the Quit button or pressing Esc.To review 
  32. the rules of checkers and some winning strategies, press 
  33. the Help button.
