  17. You might have following question which comes from one customer who

  19. asked in the ZyXEL support forum on CompuServe (GO ZYXEL):

  29. Answer: sorry guys - this is my mistake !
  30.  
  31. I wrote the Windows95 modem script files which are distributed with the
  32.  
  33. European (!) versions of Windows95.
  34.  
  35.  
  36.  
  37. For the U-1496 modem series there is a little line in the modem script
  38.  
  39. "MDMZYXEL.INF" which makes the working with those modem which have
  40.  
  41. firmware versions older then v6.0x ("ati0" will report you the firmware
  42.  
  43. version in those cases) impossible. Windows95 recognizes the U-1496x modem
  44.  
  45. but doesn't dial because of an initialization error of the S50 register
  46.  
  47. which doesn't exist in the firmware < v6.0x
  48.

  51. This bug has been found first by a very popular Austrian TV-News moderator,
  52.  
  53. Josef Broukal, - so I have to thank him once more for his bug report !

  59. There are two solutions:
  60.  
  61. ------------------------

  63.  1.) get a new Windows95 modem script for ZyXEL U-1496 series
  64.  
  65.      (here in CompuServe ("MDMZYX14.ZIP") oder on Internet
  66.  
  67.      ftp://ftp.ping.at/pub/users/zyxel/software/Windows95/mdmzyx14.zip),
  68.  
  69.      uncompress this file with PKUNZIP, copy the "MDMZYXEL.INF" into
  70.  
  71.      the \WINDOWS\INF directory. Then start the "modem install wizzard"
  72.  
  73.      in the "START/Settings/Control-Panel/Modems" and install your modem
  74.  
  75.      again !

  79.  2.) upgrade the firmware of your old ZyXEL U-1496x to the current
  80.  
  81.      version v6.15 (in this case you will have to burn the firmware
  82.  
  83.      into two EPROMs and do a hardware/factory reset afterwards by
  84.  
  85.      pushing the D/V or Enter button while powering-on the modem)
  86.  
  87.      The advantage of the new firmware is Fax Class 1 for "faxing a file"
  88.  
  89.      with the MS At-Work-Fax which is included in Windows95 or WfW.

  99. Please copy this new "MDMZYXEL.INF" (internal rev. 29, 01/23/96) into your
  100.  
  101. "\WINDOWS\INF\" directory and overwrite your old file. Then install your
  102.  
  103. ZyXEL U-1496xx modem entries once again - the Windows95 registry will be
  104.  
  105. updated automatically.

  111. PS:   this MDMZYXEL.INF is still a betatest which has not yet been
  112.  
  113.       approved by Microsoft. Because of this betatest status there
  114.  
  115.       are some special debug informations included in the INF file
  116.  
  117.       itself, especially for the fax receiving. Therefor I added
  118.  
  119.       also Microsoft's "AWCMFG32.DLL" which should be copied to your
  120.  
  121.       "\WINDOWS\SYTEM" directory. This file will create a special
  122.  
  123.       logfile "FAX0.MON" on C:\. If you have any problems in
  124.  
  125.       receiving faxes with "At Work Fax" you can view & store or print
  126.  
  127.       this compressed logfile by using following "mouse click path":

  129.       "MS Exchange & Inbox Settings Properties / Microsoft Fax Properties /
  130.  
  131.       Modem Properties / Advanced / View Log..."
