  14.  ■ This document addresses the following upgrades;
  15.    1. Modem firmware by Microcom FirmUp(tm) Windows Applet
  16.    2. Modem firmware update with Terminal Emulation Software
  17.  
  18.  ■ FirmUp(tm) now features enhanced Windows95(tm) compatibility for both
  19.    PCMCIA and Parallel Modems. FirmUp will automatically switch to
  20.    serial mode until the firmware upload process is complete.  No
  21.    additional configuration is necessary for notebook computers under
  22.    Windows95(tm).

  52.    Basic Installation Procedure for the Microcom FirmUp(tm) Applet

  55.    1. Obtain the current firmware file for your product.
  56.    
  57.    2. Create a directory for the FirmUp program files on your hard drive.
  58.       Example: MD c:\firmup)  Copy all of the included files to this
  59.       directory.

  61.    3. Install For Windows 3.xx:
  62.       Create a program item by selecting File/New
  63.       Description: Firmup
  64.       Command line: C:\Firmup\Firmup.exe
  65.       Working Directory: C:\Firmup
  66.       Click on Change Icon.
  67.       Double click the icon
  68.       Click OK

  70.       Install for Windows 95:
  71.       Open Explorer and change to the c:\firmup directory.  Create a
  72.       shortcut for firmup.exe and drag to the location of your choice.

  74.    4. Update Procedure
  75.  
  76.       Execute FirmUp by double clicking on the icon.  Select the correct
  77.       com port and modem type.  Click on the [INFO] button. If you
  78.       receive a "Modem not Found" error message, recheck your COM port
  79.       selection.

  81.       Now select the correct radio button for your Microcom modem
  82.       product.
  83.  
  84.       Click on the [Update] Button.  A file selection dialog box will
  85.       appear.
  86.  
  87.       Select the correct path to the firmware file.
  88.       Example: c:\firmup\M0853318.DPF

  90.       Now click on the [OK] button and the update process will begin.

  93.    What to do if the Firmware Update Fails:
  94.    ----------------------------------------

  96.      - Windows 3.11 Flow Control Mismatch:
  97.  
  98.        Microcom Modems are configured to use hardware (RTS/CTS) flow
  99.        control by default.  Windows 3.1x default settings are XON/XOFF
  100.        flow control.  You can optimize your port settings by going into
  101.        Main -> Comtrol Panel -> Ports -> COMn .  Change the Flow Control
  102.        setting from XON/XOFF to "Hardware" on the drop down selection
  103.        box.

  105.      - Use a Slower Port Speed:
  106.  
  107.        For Windows 3.11:  Select a Port Speed of 9600 bps or lower in
  108.        Main -> Control Panel -> Ports -> COMn
  109.  
  110.        For Windows 95: From the START Menu, select Settings ->
  111.        Control Panel -> Modems Icon -> Modem Properties Tabbed Page ->
  112.        Advanced Settings. Change Serial Port Speed to 9600 bps
  113.  
  114.      - Regarding 16550 UART Serial Support:
  115.  
  116.        The TravelCard Fast and TravelCard 28.8 P have integral 16550
  117.        support.
  118.  
  119.        The firmware update procedure for all serial-connected Microcom
  120.        modems is greatly facilitated if the serial port is supported by
  121.        a 16550 equivalent buffered UART chip.
  122.  
  123.        The actual main code file for Microcom FlashROM upgradeable
  124.        products is an ASCII Hex Dump file.  Each line of the firmware
  125.        code is protected by a checksum.  In the event that a bit is
  126.        "dropped", the checksum will fail.  The 16 byte buffers in a
  127.        16550 or equivalent serial port will greatly reduce the
  128.        possibility of a checksum failure due to dropped bits.

  130.      - Shut Down all other Processes while Updating your Firmware:
  131.  
  132.        FirmUP will have a greater possibilty of success when it does not
  133.        have to compete with other applications and processes for
  134.        interrupt service.  We recommend that nothing else should be
  135.        running for the duration of the update process.
  136.  
  137.      - Reset Factory Defaults for Deskport Fast - All Models:
  138.  
  139.        Experience has shown that the update process may be eased by
  140.        resuming a factory default configuration for the DeskPorte Fast,
  141.        DeskPorte Fast+ and the corresponding rack mount models. This can
  142.        be quickly accomplished by switch setting.  Open SW2-4 and turn
  143.        the modem off and on.  Leave the switch open.  Proceed with the
  144.        update procedure.  Restore the switch to the closed position and
  145.        reconfigure the modem.

  148.    How to Flash Update Modem Firmware with Terminal Emulation Software:
  149.    --------------------------------------------------------------------

  151.    to be capable of supporting this procedure.

  164.    - Basic Steps for Terminal Emulation Software:

  166.      Set Serial Port Speed in Software to 9600 bps
  167.      Set Flow Control in Software to Hardware Flow Control (RTS/CTS)
  168.      If your Software supports only Software Flow Control, send AT\Q1
  169.      command to modem (XON/XOFF Flow Control)
  170.  
  171.      Set ASCII Transfer Options in Software:

  173.        Character Pacing        = 0
  174.        Delay between Linefeeds = 0
  175.  
  176.      Send AT^H <enter> to modem to begin Update Process
  177.  
  178.      Immediately begin an ASCII Upload of proper main code firmware file
  179.      to your Microcom modem.
  180.  
  181.      There will be no screen output during the actual update process.
  182.  
  183.      A successful upload will echo the message "MODEM FIRMWARE UPDATE
  184.      COMPLETE" to your terminal screen.

  186.      If you receive any error messages, refer to the "What to do if the
  187.      Firmware Update Fails" section above.

  189.      The upload process should take three to seven minutes to complete.
