  33. 1.  WHAT IS NewsMonger?
  34. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  35. 1.1 Introducing NewsMonger
  36.   TechSmith CorporationÆs NewsMonger agent for Microsoft Windows 95 &
  37.   NT provides for complete monitoring of the InternetÆs largest
  38.   source of new information, the USENET news service.  NewsMonger
  39.   provides for multiple searches, scheduling and e-mail notification
  40.   as  postings matching your criteria are discovered.

  42.   While dozens of programs are available to search and catalog web
  43.   sites, TechSmithÆs NewsMonger is the first full-featured commercial
  44.   agent to focus on the InternetÆs USENET news service.  NewsMonger
  45.   works with the AltaVista search engine to provide a complete audit
  46.   of the contents of all newsgroups.  Of course, your search criteria
  47.   can limit matches to specified newsgroups or exclude postings to
  48.   inappropriate newsgroups.  After creating and scheduling your
  49.   searches, you can continue with your other tasks -- NewsMonger will
  50.   notify you or the appropriate person when a message meeting your
  51.   criteria is discovered.

  53. 1.2 What does NewsMonger Do?
  54.   o  Constructs and refines the search query, or allows you to
  55.      directly create the query.
  56.  
  57.   o  Supports dozens of queries and thousands of matching postings.
  58.  
  59.   o  Searches USENET newsgroups for each of your active queries, using
  60.      DigitalÆs AltaVista engine, on demand, or as scheduled by you.

  62.   o  Removes duplicate postings and identifies new submissions.

  64.   o  Sends immediate notification via e-mail when new postings
  65.      matching your criteria are discovered.

  67.   o  Provides direct viewing of the selected messages. You can also

  81. 2.  NewsMonger SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  83.   In order to run NewsMonger, you must have the following:
  84.  
  85.   o  A PC compatible system that meets the minimum hardware
  86.      requirements of Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 95
  87.  
  88.   o  Microsoft Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows NT 3.51
  89.  
  90.   o  A permanent or dial-up connection to the Internet
  91.  
  92.   o  A mouse or other pointing device
  93.  
  94.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer

  97. 3.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION

  99. 3.1 Evaluation Package Contents
  100.  
  101.   Included in the NewsMonger archive file are the following files:
  102.  
  103.   readme.txt      This file.
  104.   setup.exe       NewsMonger installation program.
  105.  
  106.   Included in electronic distributions (.ZIP): 
  107.   file_id.diz     Describes the contents of the archive file
  108.   vendinfo.diz    Product information for distributors.

  110. 3.2 Installation Instructions
  111.  
  112.   The NewsMonger installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  113.   application.  You must have Windows NT or Windows 95 installed
  114.   prior to installing NewsMonger.  To install NewsMonger, perform the
  115.   following steps:
  116.  
  117.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  118.  
  119.   2. Insert the NewsMonger diskette into a floppy drive.
  120.  
  121.   For Windows 95 users:
  122.  
  123.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  124.  
  125.   For Windows NT users:
  126.  
  127.   3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  128.      from the drop down menu.
  129.  
  130.   For all users:
  131.  
  132.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  133.           a:\setup
  134.      (If you are installing NewsMonger from a diskette drive other
  135.      than the A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the
  136.      command line above.)
  137.  
  138.   5. Click on the OK button.
  139.  
  140.   6. Follow the instructions given on the installation screens.
  141.  
  142. 3.3  Uninstall Instructions
  143.  
  144.   If after installing NewsMonger, you find it necessary to
  145.   remove the software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  146.  
  147.   Uninstall instructions for Windows 95
  148.  
  149.   1. Run the Windows 95 Control Panel
  150.  
  151.   2. Open the Add/Remove Programs applet from Control Panel.
  152.  
  153.   3. Select NewsMonger from the list of applications that can
  154.      uninstalled by Windows.
  155.  
  156.   4. Click on the Add/Remove button to uninstall NewsMonger.

  158.   Uninstall instructions for Windows NT
  159.  
  160.   1. Open the NewsMonger program group from Program Manager.
  161.  
  162.   2. Double-click on the Uninstall NewsMonger Icon
  163.  
  164.   3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  167. 4.  STARTING NewsMonger
  168. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  169.   Normally, NewsMonger should be run in the background to make use of
  170.   its search scheduling capabilities.  This is easily accomplished by 
  171.   selecting the option to "Start NewsMonger when Windows starts" at
  172.   the end of NewsMonger installation.  This will add NewsMonger to the
  173.   Windows Startup group, causing it ot be executed when Windows is 
  174.   started.  This option is of most value if you have a permanent 
  175.   Internet connection.

  177.   To manually start NewsMonger:
  178.  
  179.   In Windows 95 or NT 4.0, select the Start Menu and navigate to 
  180.   Programs->NewsMonger. Highlight the NewsMonger item and release 
  181.   the mouse button.

  183.   In Windows NT 3.51, double-click on the NewsMonger icon in the 
  184.   group you selected to put NewsMonger in during installation.

  189. 5.1 Using NewsMonger's On-line Help
  190.  
  191.   NewsMonger's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows
  192.   Help subsystems.  The NewsMonger Help file contains all of the
  193.   information you'll need to use NewsMonger.

  195.   To access NewsMonger Help, select Help from the NewsMonger menu bar,
  196.   then Help Index from the drop-down menu.

  198.   When you register NewsMonger, you will receive a software key that
  199.   will disable the evaluation time-limit and remove all registration
  200.   reminder screens.

  222.   NewsMonger, please clearly state the following:

  233. 5.3  NewsMonger E-Mail Feedback Function
  234.   NewsMonger offers an easy, automated way to communicate problems, 
  235.   comments and suggestions back to TechSmith.  The FeedBack node in 
  236.   tree view allows you to include NewsMonger system and search
  237.   configuration information in an e-mail to TechSmith to assist in
  238.   any technical support issues.  Inclusion of this information is
  239.   optional, but will greatly assist in diagnosing any problem.

  251. 7.  KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS

  253.   Under Windows 95 the article view cannot display or print more than
  254.   60K of an article.  This limitation does not apply to saving the 
  255.   article to a file.

  258. 8.  REGISTERING NewsMonger

  260.   This program and its associated files are part of an evaluation
  261.   package copyrighted by TechSmith Corporation. NewsMonger is not in
  262.   the public domain.  This program must be registered if it is used
  263.   beyond the 45 day evaluation period.

  265.   Single-User NewsMonger
  266.   ----------------------
  267.   The single-user license price is $39.95 (USD).
  268.  
  269.   When you register NewsMonger, you have the option of requesting a
  270.   registered version of the software on diskette or of requesting a
  271.   software key to register the version you have. The software key
  272.   immediately removes all registration reminder screens and evaluation
  273.   expiration dates.
  274.  
  275.   Multi-User NewsMonger
  276.   ---------------------
  277.   The 10-user license price is $200.00 (USD).
  278.  
  279.   Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
  280.   of NewsMonger. A single diskette is shipped along with the
  281.   multi-user license.  
  282.  
  283. 8.1 Registration Instructions
  284.  
  285.   1.  Select the NewsMonger program's Help menu.
  286.  
  287.   2.  Select How to Register from the menu.
  288.  
  289.   3.  Click on the Registration Form button.  Enter your registration
  290.       information in the fields provided.
  291.  
  292.       NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register.
  293.             Your software key will be personalized for that name
  294.             ONLY.  Your key will NOT work if you change this name
  295.             after you have sent in your registration.
  296.  
  297.   4.  When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file
  298.       called REGISTER.TXT in the NewsMonger default directory. This is
  299.       your registration and order form.  It includes a price sheet and
  300.       your Product ID number.
  301.  
  302.   5.  Windows Notepad will now open REGISTER.TXT automatically,
  303.       allowing you to edit and or print the registration form.  While
  304.       you are editing, please complete any blank items, including
  305.       quantities, totals, and payment information. DO NOT EDIT THE
  306.       PRODUCT ID NUMBER. 
  307.  
  308.       NOTE: shipping charges are only applicable to diskette orders.
  309.  
  310.   6.  Return the registration form, with payment, to TechSmith
  311.       Corporation by any of the methods described on the form.  Upon
  312.       receipt of your order, TechSmith will generate your diskette or
  313.       software key. It will then be sent to you by the method of
  314.       your choice, either e-mail, fax, postal delivery or other.
  315.  
  316.   If you have elected to receive a software key, use the following
  317.   steps to complete the registration process.
  318.  
  319.   7.  Select the Help menu.
  320.  
  321.   8.  Select Enter Software Key from the menu.
  322.  
  323.   9.  Enter your registration key, exactly as it is shown, in the
  324.       field provided.
  325.  
  326.   10. Press OK.
  327.  
  328.   Your software is now registered!  All the registration reminder
  329.   screens and software expiration dates will be removed.  If you have
  330.   any additional questions or comments, contact TechSmith by e-mail at
