  4. WHAT'S NEW
  5. ----------
  6. Shorthand Version 5.0 is a 16-bit Windows application with
  7. a new 16 to 32 bit translation interface that enables Shorthand
  8. to work with both Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 applications.

  15. INTRODUCTION
  16. ------------
  17. Shorthand is a typing productivity tool designed to work concurrently
  18. with most Microsoft Windows (both 16 and 32 bit) applications.  
  19. Just as a stenographer uses shorthand notation to represent words and 
  20. phrases, Shorthand allows you to represent a string of text with a 
  21. much shorter abbreviation or keyword.  Instead of typing the text string, 
  22. you type the shorter keyword and Shorthand takes care of typing 
  23. the text string into your application.  For example, you can
  24. represent the phrase "as soon as possible" with the keyword "asap."
  25. The next time you need to type the phrase "as soon as possible" into
  26. your favorite Windows word processor, you simply type "\asap", press 
  27. the Enter key, and Shorthand types "as soon as possible" right into 
  28. your Windows word processor.  The leading "\" is a hot key character 
  29. that signals Shorthand that you are about to type a keyword.  (You 
  30. can change the hot key character to another character if you wish.)  
  31. Shorthand works with most Windows word processors, text editors and 
  32. even text fields in most Windows dialog boxes.  A good illustration 
  33. of the flexibility of Shorthand is the common (and tedious) procedure 
  34. of entering e-mail addresses.  With Shorthand, you first enter the
  35. e-mail address and a unique keyword into Shorthand's dictionary.  
  36. The next time you need to type the address, just activate Shorthand, 
  37. type the keyword and Shorthand will type the address for you!

  39. DISTRIBUTION LICENSE
  40. --------------------
  41. Shorthand is a shareware program that can be freely
  42. uploaded to any public bulletin board such as Compuserve, Prodigy,
  43. etc.  Shareware distributors may distribute this program for a small
  44. fee to cover their distribution costs.
  45. The only thing you can't distribute are the passwords to unlock
  46. Shorthand.

  48. INSTALLATION
  49. ------------
  50. Copy the files to a directory on your hard disk. 
  51. Run the SETUP.EXE program to install Shorthand.
  52. Complete documentation is available on-line in the
  53. SHORTHND.HLP Help File.

  55. REGISTRATION
  56. ------------
  57. Shorthand is protected by a software time-lock.  When you first
  58. install Shorthand, you are given 30 days to evaluate the product.
  59. If you find Shorthand useful you are expected to register. 
  60. Shorthand implements a PC-based registration scheme;
  61. you must register *each* computer that will be running Shorthand
  62. regardless of the number of users who will be actually using it.
  63.  
  64. To register, please follow these steps:
  65. 1.  Install Shorthand on the computer that is to be registered.
  66. 2.  Run Shorthand.  The About Box will be displayed showing the
  67.     number of days remaining in the evaluation period.
  68. 3.  Click the Register button in the middle of the About Box.
  69.     The Shorthand for Windows Registration box appears and 
  70.     displays the Program Name, User ID# and PC ID# generated 
  71.     for the computer. The ID's are like an electronic 
  72.     fingerprint; Shorthand generates different ID's for 
  73.     different computers.
  74. 4.  Click the Print button to print the Program Name, User ID#
  75.     and PC ID#.  If you don't have a printer, carefully copy
  76.     the Program Name, User ID# and PC ID# on a piece of paper.
  77.     The ID's consist of the characters 'A' through 'F' and the
  78.     numbers '0' through '9'.
  79. 5.  Mail the print-out you made in the previous step along with
  80.     the registration fee of US$29 (price subject to change at
  81.     at any time) to:

  87. 6.  If you wish to register more than one computer, repeat
  88.     steps 1 through 5 for *each* computer. Remember that
  89.     the PC ID and User ID are different for each computer.

  91. MULTIPLE PC DISCOUNT
  92. --------------------
  93. A discount is available if you want to register more than
  94. one computer at the same time.  The registration fee in
  95. this case is only US$19 per computer (the price is subject
  96. to change at any time).  For example, if you
  97. want to register two computers, the total fee is only US$38.
  98. Note that this discount applies only if you register two or
  99. more computers at the same time. It doesn't apply if you
  100. register one computer today and decide to register another
  101. one at a later time!

  103. COMPUSERVE SWREG DISCOUNT
  104. ------------------------- 
  105. If you are a member of Compuserve, you can register for only
  106. US$19 per computer by using the Shareware Registration Database 
  107. (GO SWREG).  Shorthand is registered under ID# 2649. 
  108. This offer is available only for a limited time and OfficeSoft
  109. reserves the right to change the price at any time.

  111. UPGRADE DISCOUNT
  112. ----------------
  113. You are entitled to a discount if you are a registered user of a 
  114. previous version of Shorthand.  The registration fee in this case
  115. is only US$19 per computer.

  117. WHAT YOU GET
  118. ------------
  119. After OfficeSoft receives your registration fee, OfficeSoft
  120. will send you a Password keyed to the User ID and PC ID of
  121. your computer. If you include your e-mail address, OfficeSoft
  122. can send you the Password much faster. 
  123. You should then enter the Password in Shorthand's Software 
  124. Registration Box to complete the registration process.

  128. WHAT YOU DON'T GET
  129. ------------------
  130. To keep prices this low, you don't get a disk nor do you
  131. get printed documentation.
  132. The Shorthand files are distributed through the World Wide Web
  133. and bulletin boards.  Registered users will not receive a disk 
  134. because there is no difference between the shareware version  
  135. and the registered version of the Shorthand files.
  136. You are free to download the latest versions from the Shorthand
  137. Home Page on the World Wide Web.
  138. If you need to get the latest version of Shorthand on a disk,
  139. OfficeSoft can mail you a disk for a small service charge.
