SHORTHAND FOR WINDOWS
Version 5.0
WHAT'S NEW
----------
Shorthand Version 5.0 is a 16-bit Windows application with
a new 16 to 32 bit translation interface that enables Shorthand
to work with both Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 applications.
If you are a current user of Shorthand, please see the
SHORTHND.WRI file for a description of new features.
See the PRICELST.TXT file for a list of registration fees.
INTRODUCTION
------------
Shorthand is a typing productivity tool designed to work concurrently
with most Microsoft Windows (both 16 and 32 bit) applications.
Just as a stenographer uses shorthand notation to represent words and
phrases, Shorthand allows you to represent a string of text with a
much shorter abbreviation or keyword. Instead of typing the text string,
you type the shorter keyword and Shorthand takes care of typing
the text string into your application. For example, you can
represent the phrase "as soon as possible" with the keyword "asap."
The next time you need to type the phrase "as soon as possible" into
your favorite Windows word processor, you simply type "\asap", press
the Enter key, and Shorthand types "as soon as possible" right into
your Windows word processor. The leading "\" is a hot key character
that signals Shorthand that you are about to type a keyword. (You
can change the hot key character to another character if you wish.)
Shorthand works with most Windows word processors, text editors and
even text fields in most Windows dialog boxes. A good illustration
of the flexibility of Shorthand is the common (and tedious) procedure
of entering e-mail addresses. With Shorthand, you first enter the
e-mail address and a unique keyword into Shorthand's dictionary.
The next time you need to type the address, just activate Shorthand,
type the keyword and Shorthand will type the address for you!
DISTRIBUTION LICENSE
--------------------
Shorthand is a shareware program that can be freely
uploaded to any public bulletin board such as Compuserve, Prodigy,
etc. Shareware distributors may distribute this program for a small
fee to cover their distribution costs.
The only thing you can't distribute are the passwords to unlock
Shorthand.
INSTALLATION
------------
Copy the files to a directory on your hard disk.
Run the SETUP.EXE program to install Shorthand.
Complete documentation is available on-line in the
SHORTHND.HLP Help File.
REGISTRATION
------------
Shorthand is protected by a software time-lock. When you first
install Shorthand, you are given 30 days to evaluate the product.
If you find Shorthand useful you are expected to register.
Shorthand implements a PC-based registration scheme;
you must register *each* computer that will be running Shorthand
regardless of the number of users who will be actually using it.
To register, please follow these steps:
1. Install Shorthand on the computer that is to be registered.
2. Run Shorthand. The About Box will be displayed showing the
number of days remaining in the evaluation period.
3. Click the Register button in the middle of the About Box.
The Shorthand for Windows Registration box appears and
displays the Program Name, User ID# and PC ID# generated
for the computer. The ID's are like an electronic
fingerprint; Shorthand generates different ID's for
different computers.
4. Click the Print button to print the Program Name, User ID#
and PC ID#. If you don't have a printer, carefully copy
the Program Name, User ID# and PC ID# on a piece of paper.
The ID's consist of the characters 'A' through 'F' and the
numbers '0' through '9'.
5. Mail the print-out you made in the previous step along with
the registration fee of US$29 (price subject to change at
at any time) to:
OfficeSoft LLC
517 Cobb Court
La Puente, California 91746
6. If you wish to register more than one computer, repeat
steps 1 through 5 for *each* computer. Remember that
the PC ID and User ID are different for each computer.
MULTIPLE PC DISCOUNT
--------------------
A discount is available if you want to register more than
one computer at the same time. The registration fee in
this case is only US$19 per computer (the price is subject
to change at any time). For example, if you
want to register two computers, the total fee is only US$38.
Note that this discount applies only if you register two or
more computers at the same time. It doesn't apply if you
register one computer today and decide to register another
one at a later time!
COMPUSERVE SWREG DISCOUNT
-------------------------
If you are a member of Compuserve, you can register for only
US$19 per computer by using the Shareware Registration Database
(GO SWREG). Shorthand is registered under ID# 2649.
This offer is available only for a limited time and OfficeSoft
reserves the right to change the price at any time.
UPGRADE DISCOUNT
----------------
You are entitled to a discount if you are a registered user of a
previous version of Shorthand. The registration fee in this case
is only US$19 per computer.
WHAT YOU GET
------------
After OfficeSoft receives your registration fee, OfficeSoft
will send you a Password keyed to the User ID and PC ID of
your computer. If you include your e-mail address, OfficeSoft
can send you the Password much faster.
You should then enter the Password in Shorthand's Software
Registration Box to complete the registration process.
Free minor updates are available from the Shorthand Web Page
(see the end of this file for the URL address).
WHAT YOU DON'T GET
------------------
To keep prices this low, you don't get a disk nor do you
get printed documentation.
The Shorthand files are distributed through the World Wide Web
and bulletin boards. Registered users will not receive a disk
because there is no difference between the shareware version
and the registered version of the Shorthand files.
You are free to download the latest versions from the Shorthand
Home Page on the World Wide Web.
If you need to get the latest version of Shorthand on a disk,
OfficeSoft can mail you a disk for a small service charge.
See the PRICELST.TXT file for more information.
