AN INTRODUCTION TO DJLOPE FOR WINDOWS
=====================================
Thank you for choosing DJLOPE for Windows. DJLOPE for Windows is an
envelope and label printing program and database for use with all
Windows printers. Although earlier versions were limited to the HP
DeskJet printers, this version works with most all Windows printers.
This README.1ST file contains all of the help files also available
online as you use DJLOPE for Windows.
Please print this file if you want a printed copy of the program
documentation. With your registration, you will receive a copy of
the complete documentation in printed form.
DJLOPE for Windows has been carefully designed for ease of use. Every
effort has been taken to make the program as intuitive and easy-to-use
as possible. These guidelines are presented to make your introduction
to the program a pleasant experience.
Step 1: Look through all the DJLOPE Help topics before you begin so
that you may familiarize yourself with the operation of the program.
Step 2: Use the Configuration! menu first to set up the program for
first use. You can change all these options later whenever you like.
Step 3: Create a new database (Select File/New) or convert an old
database from the DOS versions of DJLOPE if you have one (or more) of
these.
Step 4: Enjoy using the program. We believe you'll like DJLOPE for
Windows. We want to hear from you, your ideas, suggestions, gripes! If
you have downloaded this program as shareware, you have a full 30 days
to use and evaluate the program. It is not crippled in any way and is
fully functional. If, after 30 days, you are not satisfied that DJLOPE
for Windows meets your needs, remove the program and data files from
your computer. If you continue to use the program after 30 days, you
are expected to register the program with JMJ Software.
Step 5: If you haven't already done so, register the program. This
commits JMJ Software to support your use of this program, and notify
you of upgrades and bug fixes as they become available.
You may register by printing out the Registration Form as you close
DJLOPE for Windows. If you are a member of CompuServe Information
Service, you may register online (and pay for the program through
your CompuServe account). GO SWREG, and register DJLOPE (Registration
ID# 9986). This is especially convenient if you located outside the
United States, as JMJ Software is unable to process credit cards at
this time.
If you have database files from other programs that you would like
converted for use with DJLOPE, please contact us via e-mail or
phone. For a nominal fee, we can convert most file formats to a
format usable by DJLOPE for Windows. Contact us for further details.
Thanks again for letting us introduce you to DJLOPE for Windows.

INSTALLING DJLOPE FOR WINDOWS
=============================
Files included with this program in the DJLOPEWN.ZIP file are:
-----------------------------------------------------------
(These files should be copied to their own subdirectory.)
DJLOPEW.EXE - The main program executable
CONFIG.HLP - A help file (ASCII text format)
INTRO.HLP - A help file (ASCII text format)
ENVELOPE.HLP - A help file (ASCII text format)
DJLOPE.HLP - A help file (ASCII text format)
ADDRESS1.MDB - Your first database file
NEW.MDB - Read-only, hidden database file (do not delete)
README.1ST - The file you are currently reading
-----------------------------------------------------------
(These files should be moved to your Windows \SYSTEM directory.)
VBCTL3D.VBX - A system file needed by DJLOPE for Windows
COMMDLG.DLL - A system file needed by DJLOPE for Windows
MSAJT110.DLL - A system file needed by DJLOPE for Windows
CMDIALOG.VBX - A system file needed by DJLOPE for Windows
VBDB300.DLL - A system file needed by DJLOPE for Windows
MSAES110.DLL - A system file needed by DJLOPE for Windows
>>>>>IMPORTANT!!!
In moving the above files to the Windows \SYSTEM directory,
care should be taken NOT TO REPLACE NEWER FILES WITH OLDER
FILES, especially the COMMDLG.DLL file. If you already have
a COMMDLG.DLL file in your Windows \SYSTEM subdirectory with
a more recent date than the one we provide, DO NOT replace it
with the older file. Any file that you already have with a
older date should be renamed to avoid conflict.
Working carefully while moving these files will avoid unexpected
results in Windows.
You also need the following file, available on the Internet
and most online services.
VBRUN300.DLL - A system file needed by DJLOPE for Windows
VBRUN300.DLL should be placed in your Windows \SYSTEM directory.
One final task is to change the attributes of the NEW.MDB file to Hidden
and Read Only. You can do this in Windows File Manager.

TROUBLESHOOTING SUGGESTIONS
===========================
If you experience problems with the program, please read the
following for a solution:
=================
Windows 3.x Users
=================
PROBLEM: When starting DJLOPE for Windows you see the following
error message: "Cannot load custom control DLL: CMDIALOG.VBX".
SOLUTION: First, look in your Windows \SYSTEM subdirectory for a
file called COMMDLG.DLL. It should have a date prior to 7/11/95.
If it is dated prior to 7/11/95, you need take no further action.
If yours is dated 7/11/95 (and you are NOT running Windows 95)
then you will need to restore a file from your original Windows
disks.
Exit Windows, and look on your Windows disks for a file called
COMMDLG.DL_. Also look for a file called EXPAND.EXE. They will
be on different disks.
Copy both of these into your Windows \SYSTEM subdirectory.
Change directories to the Windows \SYSTEM subdirectory and confirm
the presence of the file COMMDLG.DLL with a date of 7/11/95.
Delete it.
Then type
EXPAND COMMDLG.DL_ COMMDLG.DLL
and press the Enter key. This will expand your original Windows
file once again.
Now restart Windows. Windows should operate normally, and DJLOPE
should load normally.
====================
DeskJet 500(C) Users
====================
PROBLEM: DJLOPE for Windows ejects the envelope and prints the
address on a sheet of paper.
SOLUTION: Start DJLOPE for Windows. Go to the File menu, select
Printer Setup. Select "Manual Envelope Feed", Click OK.
Place an envelope face down on the envelope tray and snug up
against the rollers, but DO NOT LOAD the envelope.
In the Configure menu, be sure the top margin for the return address
is "0". When you are ready to print an envelope, press the "Print
Envelope" button and DJLOPE will load the envelope and print it.
When you are through using DJLOPE for Windows, remember to change
the Printer Setup to "Feed from Tray" before exiting the program.
=================
Windows 3.1 Users
=================
PROBLEM: When starting DJLOPE for Windows you see an error message
referring to a file SHARE.EXE.
SOLUTION: Confirm that you have a file in your DOS subdirectory
called SHARE.EXE. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file to add the line
INSTALL=C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /F:4096 /L:500
then reboot your computer.
VSHARE.386 eliminates the need for SHARE.EXE when you run
Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups in 386 enhanced mode.
If you run Windows 3.1 in standard mode, you still need to
run SHARE.EXE. If you run applications that are not compatible
with SHARE.EXE (e.g., some DOS CAD programs), and you run Windows
3.1 in 386 enhanced mode, you may be able to use VSHARE.386
instead of SHARE.EXE.
If you are running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in 386 enhanced
mode, you are already using VSHARE.386. If you are running
Windows 3.1, use the following procedure to install VSHARE.386:
1. VSHARE.386 is included in this ZIP file.
2. Quit Windows 3.1.
3. Copy the file VSHARE.386 to the Windows SYSTEM subdirectory.
4. Using a text editor (such as MS-DOS Editor), edit your
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files and remove any line
containing SHARE.EXE.
5. Edit the [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI file with
Notepad and add the following line:
device=vshare.386
6. Save the SYSTEM.INI file and restart Windows.
==================
All Printer Users
==================
PROBLEM: DJLOPE will print all records in a database on
labels or paper but will not print an individual envelope.
SOLUTION: Start DJLOPE for Windows and go to File ...
Printer Setup. Look for a setting for "Paper Source" and
you should find an envelope bin or other manual feed source.
Select this, then click OK and try printing an envelope. It
may take some experimenting to find the setting you in the
Printer Setup dialog box needed for your printer.
=======================================================
THE FILE MENUS
FILE NEW (CTRL+N)
Creates a new DJLOPE database file and immediately prompts the user for
the first record. After entering the first record, you will be prompted
for a new filename. You may type a complete filename with .MDB extension
(e.g. MYFILE.MDB) or just a filename (e.g. MYFILE) and DJLOPE will add
the .MDB extension for you. Do not use an extension other than .MDB for
a filename since DJLOPE uses .MDB as a default file name extension, and
displays only those files when you select FILE OPEN.
FILE OPEN (CTRL+O)
Opens an existing DJLOPE database file. The dialog box will default to
files with the database extension .MDB in the current directory. Click
on Drive or Directory to browse for DJLOPE database files in other
directories if they exist.
Microsoft Access users may have other database files with an .MDB
extension. These cannot be opened with DJLOPE, only files created for
use with the DJLOPE program. Trying to open a file not created in DJLOPE
will have unpredictable results.
FILE SAVE (CTRL+S)
Saves the current file to disk.
FILE SAVE AS ... (CTRL+A)
Create two identical DJLOPE database files with different names. Useful
if you want to add to an existing database, but retain just the existing
data, too.
PRINTER SETUP
Opens the Windows Printer control panel. Normally, since DJLOPE controls
printing operations, you will not need to use this setup facility. If
envelopes are not printing with the correct orientation, be sure
"Portrait" orientation is selected in the Windows Printer control panel
regardless of the method of envelope feed for your printer. Paper size
should be set to "Letter". Other settings will have unpredictable
results. DO NOT CHANGE PRINTER SETUP SETTINGS UNLESS YOU CANNOT PRINT
ENVELOPES WITH THE DEFAULT SETTINGS. DJLOPE for Windows does not change
these settings.
CONVERT DATABASE (CTRL+C)
Users of previous DOS versions of DJLOPE will use this conversion
facility to convert their old database files (*.LST format) to the .MDB
format used by DJLOPE for Windows.
Conversion is a three-step process.
1. Select the database to convert by clicking on "Select Database to
Convert" or pressing ALT-S. The resulting dialog box will show files
with the .LST extension. You may browse anywhere you have stored these
files to select them. Click on the file to convert, then click on OK.
2. Usually, you will not need to change the file name displayed in this
dialog box. However, you may wish to store the new converted file in
another directory or folder on you hard drive. Be sure that any change
to a folder or directory name is typed correctly.
3. Perform the conversion by clicking on "Perform Conversion" or press
ALT-C. The file is quickly converted to the new format and is ready for
use. The old .LST file still exists without changes.
Do these three steps for as many .LST files as you want to convert.
Click on "Exit" or press ALT-X when you have converted the desired .LST
files.
EXIT DJLOPE (CTRL+F4)
Exits the DJLOPE for Windows program.
........................
THE PRINT MENUS
QUICK PRINT WITHOUT SAVING (CTRL+Q)
To print an envelope without saving the address to a database, use this
option. Type in up to five lines in the dialog box, then click on Print
to print the envelope.
PRINT ALL RECORDS (CTRL+R)
Use this option to create labels with DJLOPE or simply to print a
database on standard 8.5" x 11" paper.
You will be reminded to be sure the printer is turned on and loaded with
paper or labels. The program will report to you the number of records in
the database and calculate for you the number of pages (or label sheets)
you will need for this operation. Click OK to proceed.
Avery Labels x160 are the only labels currently supported by DJLOPE.
These labels are ideal for addresses and are 1" x 2-5/8" in size, 30 to
a page. They are available in most office supply stores. If you are
using an inkjet printer, be sure to use labels for "inkjet" printers
(Avery 8160). Laser or copier labels are generally not suitable for use
in DeskJet printers and can get stuck inside your printer.
You will notice that the bottom row of labels is not printed. This is a
limitation of many printer bottom margins, and not an oversight on our
part. Trying to print on the bottom row of labels exceeds the bottom
margin limits of the printer, therefore, for best results, DJLOPE leaves
this area blank.
THE FIND MENUS
FIND (CTRL+F)
To search a DJLOPE database for any group of characters (a name, street,
or Zip code), press CTRL+F to display a dialog box. Type into the dialog
box the character or characters you wish to find in that database. Press
[ENTER] to begin the search. DJLOPE will display the first record it
finds containing your search selection. Pressing the F3 key will
continue searching for the same selection to the end of the database.
FIND AGAIN (F3)
This is the same as pressing the F3 key as described above.
THE CONFIGURE! MENU
This is fully described in a separate DJLOPE Help topic.
THE HELP MENU
HELP (F1)
Selecting "Help" or pressing the F1 key displays the help topics
available for DJLOPE.
The four help files (INTRO.HLP, DJLOPE.HLP, ENVELOPE.HLP, AND
CONFIG.HLP) are located in the same subdirectory as the DJLOPEW.EXE
file. These are ordinary text files and can be printed from Windows
NotePad or another text processor. They cannot be accessed from the
Windows Help system.
ABOUT DJLOPE
Displays information about DJLOPE and reports memory and resources
available in Windows.
=============================
CONFIGURING DJLOPE OPTIONS
Use these guidelines to configure the DJLOPE program.
...................
For best results, begin by selecting the orientation icon on this menu.
The icons represent (from left to right) 1) Landscape feed in the center
of the printer, 2) Landscape feed along the right edge of the printer,
and 3) portrait feed.
Read and follow your printer's instructions in determining how your
printer loads and feeds envelopes. Some printers will feed face down
(DeskJets), some face up (LaserJets).
Second, if your printer feeds envelopes in landscape mode, select
envelope size from the drop down list box. This will set appropriate
margin settings for printing envelopes with DJLOPE. Most of the time,
these default settings will work perfectly for you However, the settings
selected may be changed individually to suit the user.
THE RETURN ADDRESS
The font selected for the Return Address appears in the Font window. To
change the font, click on "Change Font". The font dialog box will appear
(this process may seem slow if you have a large number of fonts
installed on your system), and you can select the font, style, and size
you wish. Click on OK to activate the new font selection.
To change type size for the Return Address, click on the down arrow to
the right of the Type Size selection box and select a new size, or
select the type size showing in the selection box, and type in a new
value. Normally, the Return Address looks best if it is in the range of
8-11 points.
"From Right" and "Top Margin" refer to printing margins on the envelope.
All measurements are from the top edge of the envelope and the RIGHT
edge (not left) of the envelope in inches. Default measurements are
appropriate for a #10 business envelope. If you want to use envelopes in
other sizes, change the From Right and Top Margin settings to suit.
Enter decimal amounts as appropriate.
To omit the Return Address, click on the check box marked "Omit Return
Address." The text in the Return Address window will gray out, further
indicating that the Return Address will not print on the envelope.
The large text box is for the Return Address. Type in your selection for
a Return Address as you want it to appear on the envelope. Press [ENTER]
at the end of each line.
...................
THE POSTNET BAR CODE
To print the PostNet barcode and Facing Identification Mark (FIM, the
five vertical bars at the top edge of the envelope) on each envelope,
select "Print on Envelope".
To omit the PostNet bar code and FIM, select "Do Not Print".
DJLOPE for Windows scans each address as you print it. If the last line
of the address ends in five digits (00000) or nine digits separated by a
hyphen (00000-0000) DJLOPE will create a USPS PostNet barcode.
...................
SELECTING ENVELOPE FEED
The three graphics depict the style of envelope feed available on
various models of printers. Click on the left icon if your printer loads
envelopes centered in landscape orientation. Click on the middle icon if
your printer loads envelopes along the right guide in landscape
orientation. Click the right icon if the printer loads envelopes in
portrait orientation. Follow your printer's instructions regarding
whether the envelope should be face up or face down. You may need to
experiment with which end feeds into the printer. Normally, envelopes
should be fed into the printer stamp-end first.
...................
SELECT ADDRESSEE OPTIONS
To change the "From Right" and "Top Margin" values for various sizes of
envelopes, either select the value and type in a new value or click on
the down arrow to the right of each value to select from the list
presented. Enter decimal amounts as appropriate.
The Type Size for the Addressee is changed by selecting the value and
typing in a new value, or selecting from the drop down list supplied.
Very large sizes may not display properly on the screen but should print
predictably on the envelope.
To change the Addressee Font (which is completely independent from the
Return Address font) click on "Change Font". From the dialog box
displayed, select any font, style and size, the press OK to activate the
new font selection.
...................
EXITING THE CONFIGURATION DIALOG BOX
Clicking on OK saves the changes you have made in this dialog box, and
returns to the main screen.
Clicking on Cancel returns to the main screen without saving any
changes.
====================================
PRINTING ENVELOPES WITH DJLOPE FOR WINDOWS
The main screen of DJLOPE for Windows shows a graphic depiction of an
envelope. Fonts and type sizes and styles will change as you change them
in the Configure! menu, but margins and other elements will not change
on your screen. Changes you make in margins, however, will change the
printed output of the program.
Below the envelope are several buttons.
.............................
<<PREVIOUS (ALT+R)
Click here to move to the previous record in the database.
.............................
NEXT>> (ALT+T)
Click here to move to the next record in the database.
.............................
ADD NEW (ALT+A)
Click here to add a new record to the current database. A dialog box
opens where you can type in up to five lines for the new address. Click
on OK to add this address to the database. Click on Cancel to return to
the main screen without adding the new record.
.............................
EDIT (ALT+I)
Click here to edit the current record showing on the screen. A dialog
box open allowing you to make whatever changes you need to. Click OK to
commit the changes to the database, or click Cancel to return to the
main screen without making the changes.
.............................
DELETE (ALT+D)
Click here to delete the current record (showing on the screen) from the
database. You will see a warning "Are you sure..." before the deletion
is completed by clicking OK.
.............................
PRINT ENVELOPE (ALT+E)
Click here to print the envelope displayed on your screen. Note that if
the PostNet barcode appears on the screen above the address, it will
also print on the envelope. To omit the bar code, go to the Configure!
menu and make the appropriate change in the PostNet Barcode area.
.............................
EXIT (ALT+X)
Click here to exit the program.
