  2.                             File Infomation Viewer

  5. Introduction
  6. ------------
  7. The File Information Viewer is a simple utility for showing the 'internal' name
  8. of a Windows format EXE or DLL file, plus any dependencies a file may have on any
  9. DLLs and whether they can be found by Windows.
  10.  
  11. The internal name of a file is a description string which is placed in the file
  12. at compile time by the author. This usually contains the full product name and
  13. sometimes a copyright notice. For example, the name string for WINFILE.EXE, the
  14. executable for the file manager, reads 'Windows File System 3.1'.

  16. The dependencies of an executable are all those DLLs which a program needs in
  17. order to be started by Windows. If one or more of these DLLs cannot be found, Windows
  18. displays the familiar and unhelpful 'Cannot Run Program' dialog box saying 'Cannot
  19. find file (or one of its components) ...'. The File Information Viewer will
  20. show all dependencies a program has and where (if at all) the DLLs may be found.

  23. Usage
  24. -----
  25. To use the File Infomation Viewer, simply select and drag one or more files from
  26. the File Manager window into the main window of the program. The files will be
  27. automatically added to the list and display their names and DLL information.

  29. As a DLL may itself depend on other DLLs, you can double-click on any entry to
  30. add it to the end of the list and finding its dependencies. Using the Edit menu
  31. you can clear the entire list or have it cleared automatically whenever a new
  32. selection is droppped into it.

  38. program and may be used and distributed freely. It may not be used for direct
  39. profit and no charge may be made for its distribution other than a reasonable
