  1. THE POSTER PROGRAM.
  2.  
  3. Version 1.6 9/16/95.  This version works with Win95.
  4.  
  5. INTRODUCTION.
  6.  
  7. POSTER has been designed to let you easily and quickly create large 
  8. posters  signs, and banners,  printing them at up to 9 feet by 9 feet. 
  9. The posters consist of text and graphics. The program automatically 
  10. enlarges all text and graphics, and tiles the output over multiple 
  11. pages.
  12.  
  13. POSTER was originally created to allow my daughter to generate large 
  14. posters for use in presentations for her 4-H club. After creating a 
  15. poster, she prints in double size (4 sheets of paper) and pastes it onto 
  16. a poster board.  For a typical presentation, she will use six to ten 
  17. posters.
  18.  
  19. The program has been enhanced to be of general use in a variety of 
  20. situations for printing big pages:
  21. 1. Creating large posters for presentations, projects, charts, etc.
  22. 2. Creating large signs for advertisements, announcements, etc.
  23. 3. Creating banners for special events, etc.
  24. 4. Enlarging pictures, charts, etc. for display.

  26. This program is shareware. The author has given permission for the file 
  27. to be distributed without restriction, but does not permit alterations 
  28. to the file. If you find this program useful, PLEASE register it to 
  29. receive future upgrades and a set of borders.

  31. ADVANTAGES OF POSTER.
  32.  
  33. This program is very easy to use, and it is very simple to create large 
  34. posters and banners.  It is especially useful when you have a number of 
  35. fonts installed, as the font selection menu displays renditions of all 
  36. the true-type fonts. The final poster size is fully configurable.

  71. INSTALLATION.
  72.  
  73. If you have unzipped the files, then you have practically installed the 
  74. program.  
  75. The package consists of the following files:
  76. 1. This README file.
  77. 2. POSTER.TXT, which is  the documentation for POSTER.  All of this 
  78.    documentation is also in the on-line help file.
  79. 3. POSTER.EXE, which is the poster program itself.
  80. 4. POSTER.HLP, which is the on-line help file.
  81. 5. CTL3D.DLL, the 3d controls library.
  82. 6. Several BORDERx.WMF border files.  These can be imported using
  83.    the Page->Border->From File command.

  85. To install the program, do the following after unzipping the poster 
  86. download file:
  87. 1. Create a directory called POSTER.
  88. 2. Copy the files POSTER.TXT, POSTER.EXE, and POSTER.HLP into that 
  89. directory.
  90. 3. Copy the file CTL3D.DLL to your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. 
  91. 4. Create a program manager icon for POSTER by doing the following:
  92.    
  93.     WINDOWS 3.1 or WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS:
  94.     a. Select the program manager group where you want the icon.
  95.     b. Select NEW.
  96.     c. Select Program Item.
  97.     d. In the dialog box, fill in Description ("Poster"), 
  98.         The command line: C:\poster\poster.exe
  99.     The working directory: C:\poster
  100.     If you have unzipped into a different directory, use it instead of 
  101.     c:\poster.
  102.  
  103.     WIN95:
  104.     a. From the START button, click on START, then Settings,
  105.          then Taskbar.
  106.      b. From the "Taskbar Properties" box, click on 
  107.         "Start Menu Options".
  108.     c. Click on NEW.
  109.     d. Enter the full patch name to poster (such as 
  110.        "c:\poster\poster.exe"), or click on the browse button, 
  111.        find the directory with POSTER in it, and click on POSTER.EXE.
  112.     e. Click on Finish.
  113.     f. Select the folder you want the shortcut in, then click on 
  114.        Finish.
  115.     g. Enter the name you want to use for the icon, 
  116.        and click on Finish.

  118. 5. You may view and print the documentation file, POSTER.TXT, with 
  119. notepad. However, this entire document is included in the online help file.

  124. VERSION 1.6 IMPROVEMENTS.

  129. 1. All known problems with color printer support have been solved.
  130. POSTER should be able to enlarge full color bitmaps, such as those 
  131. created from photo-CDs.  
  132. 2. An easier way to change font sizes, and full-size font-size images.
  133. 3. Printing was enhanced to allow a single arbitrary sheet to be 
  134. printed.
  135. 4. You can now override the default sheet sizes and margins.
  136. 5. Metric support has also been added by request.

  139. Support for metafiles and bitmap files as borders and backgrounds

  154. USING POSTER.
  155.  
  156. To start using poster, simply double click on the poster icon.  POSTER 
  157. will start and ask you for the poster or banner format. After selecting 
  158. the format you want, it will present an empty page to you.  Just start 
  159. typing to begin making your poster.

  161. You can also associate "POS" file types with poster (do this with File 
  162. Manager or Explorer.).  Then, double clicking on a POS file will 
  163. automatically start poster with that file.

  166. PRINTERS.
  167.  
  168. This program has been successfully tested on the following printers: 
  169.     HP Laserjet II and compatibles
  170.     HP Laserjet III - see special setup instructions below.
  171.     HP LaserJet 4 - See special setup instructions below
  172.     HP DeskJet PLUS
  173.     HP DeskJet 500
  174.     Epson dot matrix and compatibles
  175.     Postscript printer - See special setup instructions below

  177. If you cannot get POSTER to work properly on your printer, try checking 
  178. the box marked "Method A" in the PRINT dialog box. This should work ALL 
  179. printers (but not plotters).  If this still doesn't work, try "Method 
  180. B".  Also, see the special setup instructions below.

  184. LASERJET III USERS.
  185. If the posters you print are missing characters at page edges, then do 
  186. the following:
  187. 1. Select "Method A" in the Poster Print Dialog box.  Also, be sure your 
  188. printer is set to 300 dpi.
  189.  
  190. LASERJET 4 USERS.
  191. To successfully print posters, you must configure your printer as 
  192. follows:
  193. 1. Select "Printer Setup":
  194. 2. Set resolution to 300 dpi. (At 600dpi, printing takes a very long 
  195. time, and may hang the printer.)
  196. 3. Select "options". 
  197. 4. Select "Graphics Mode" = "raster", "Graphics Quality"="high", and
  198.      check "print true-type as graphics".
  199. If posters still do not print properly, then in the PRINT dialog box, 
  200. check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always work.  
  201.  
  202. POSTSCRIPT PRINTER USERS.
  203. POSTER cannot always automatically switch a postscript printer from 
  204. portrait mode to landscape mode.  If  "Print Preview" shows the printer 
  205. to be in the incorrect mode,use the "Print Setup" menu item to manually 
  206. select the proper mode.

  208. If you get postscript errors, or you are loosing characters at page 
  209. boundaries:
  210. 1. From the control panel, select Printers, then select 'Setup.
  211. 2. Select "options", then select "advanced".
  212. 3. Select "print true type fonts as" "Bitmap (type 3)".
  213. 4. Close the control panel.
  214. 5. Start POSTER.
  215. If posters still do not print properly, or print too slow, then in the 
  216. PRINT dialog box, check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always 
  217. work.
  218.  
  219. COLOR PRINTERS.
  220. POSTER should now properly print color text and graphics.
  221.  
  222. SLOW PRINTING.
  223. Sorry, but Windows printing is s..l..o..w.  I have no good solution for 
  224. this.  Be sure to verify your poster with "Preview" in the "Print" 
  225. dialog box.  Then, have patience while it prints.

  227. TECHNICAL TRIVIA.
  228.  
  229. POSTER is written in C, and complied using MS C7.0.  It consists of 
  230. about 10,000 lines of code (proving that it takes a lot of code to not 
  231. do very much).
