  13. Beneath this easy-to-learn strategy game lies a
  14. sophisticated and deadly puzzle.
  15.  
  16. This short document will help you prepare to take
  17. on all of the challenges that you'll face on your
  18. way to the ultimate battle.
  19.  
  20. This text is divided into 2 sections:
  21. 1) Things everyone should know.
  22. 2) Cheats.
  23.  
  24. The first section is recommended to all players.
  25. It gives fundamental playing tips to help players
  26. get the most out of the game, and become as competitive
  27. as possible. Some of these will be obvious to those
  28. who've played a few rounds.
  29.  
  30. The second section is more along the lines of "cheats".
  31. Don't look here unless you're stuck and can't get to
  32. the final showdown. Even here I don't give away all
  33. the answers, so it's safe to look, and still face
  34. a formidable challenge. If things get too easy, you
  35. can always try a higher difficulty level. Personally,
  36. I can't win on level 4 (and I made the darn game).

  39.       instructions (pressing [F1] key while playing).

  43. THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW about Drain Storm
  44.  
  45. 1) Using the proper weapon...
  46.    The most effective weapon early in the game is
  47.    the bubble. For best effect, don't wait until
  48.    monsters are right next to you. You have an
  49.    unlimited supply, so start shooting in the
  50.    direction of the monsters immediately. Knock off
  51.    as many as you can before they're right next to
  52.    you. Use the "3-shot bubbler" when you find it.
  53.  
  54. Tip: lining up monsters diagonally will give you the
  55. best odds of hitting them from long range.
  56.  
  57.    Bombs are good when you're trapped behind rows of
  58.    engulfed monsters, or when you're fighting sewer
  59.    demons.
  60.  
  61.    Don't neglect to use DECOYS. They're incredibly
  62.    helpful if you're facing more monsters than you
  63.    can fight off. Drop a decoy and move away. Many
  64.    monsters will stay with the decoy.
  65.  
  66.    Using a decoy requires some anticipation. If it
  67.    looks like you'll be overwhelmed in a few rounds,
  68.    drop a decoy and plot your get-away. Try laying a
  69.    few mines near a decoy, but not too close.
  70.  
  71.    Missiles are useful when a dense group of monsters
  72.    is approaching. They explode like cluster bombs.

  75. 2) Treasures and Treasure Chests...
  76.    You should constantly replenish your arsenal by
  77.    gathering "treasures", which can be found scattered
  78.    around every board. You'll find lots of new and useful
  79.    weapons and items this way.

  81.    To open treasure chests, use a key (by "shooting"
  82.    the key at the treasure chest from an adjacent square).
  83.    You can also open a treasure chest (forcefully) with a
  84.    bomb. However, this method may destroy some or all of
  85.    the contents.

  87. 3) Using '5' key to let monsters come to you...
  88.    Sometimes it's worthwhile to wait for monsters to come
  89.    to you. For example, you've laid some mines and want
  90.    to lure them near. Simply press the middle number-pad
  91.    key. You won't move, but monsters (and projectiles) will.
  92.  
  93. 4) Read fortune cookies...
  94.    These contain hints and clues (and it's part of the game,
  95.    so you're not cheating!). To read them, select them in
  96.    the arsenal, then shoot in any direction. Press 'M' if
  97.    there's more text than will fit in the text window.

  99. 5) Forget the mouse...
  100.    You can play the game with the mouse, but this is really
  101.    a good old-fashioned keyboard game. I use the following
  102.    fingers:
  103.     * Left ring-finger: Shift key (to select "shoot" mode)
  104.     * Left middle-finger: 'A' key (to select weapon)
  105.     * Left index-finger: 'Z' key (to select weapon)
  106.     * Right hand: number pad keys (to move/shoot in any direction)
  107.    Obviously, use what works best for you.

  109. 6) CASINO...
  110.    If you haven't found it yet, see below in the "Cheats"
  111.    section.
  112.  
  113.    The casino takes bets of just about all item types with
  114.    some exceptions: It does not take artifacts (such as
  115.    the emerald), it also does not take bubbles, which you
  116.    have no need to wager anyway.
  117.  
  118.    The game is five-card draw, and a special "Wild" symbol
  119.    appears on the table if the next hand uses wild cards.
  120.    If you win, the house pays out the weapon type you
  121.    wagered. The amount you bet is multiplied according to
  122.    the strength of your hand. Basically, it works like video
  123.    poker games.
  124.  
  125.    This is obviously an incredible chance to improve the power
  126.    of your arsenal. An arsenal with several dozen "8x missiles"
  127.    will take you a long way toward solving Drain Storm.
  128.  
  129.    BETTING:
  130.    To wager a weapon, select it from your arsenal using 'A'
  131.    and 'Z'. Then position your vehicle on top of the '$' square
  132.    found below the poker table. Simply shoot in any direction.
  133.    Any shot fired from this square is considered a bet. WARNING:
  134.    This means you should not attempt to fight monsters while
  135.    standing on this square!

  137.    Once you've placed your bet, move the vehicle to the animated
  138.    lever on the right side of the betting square. Your cards will
  139.    be dealt. Select the cards you wish to keep by moving the vehicle
  140.    to the flashing red squares found below the cards.
  141.    When you've selected all the cards to keep, move to the lever again
  142.    and draw your new cards. Wins and losses are reported immediately.
  143.    If you win, the winnings are added automatically to your arsenal.

  145. 7) Different types of monsters...
  146.    Aside from Sewer Squids and Bulldozers, you'll encounter other beasts
  147.    including Xoids and variations of Sewer Demons. Bubbles do NOT work
  148.    on Sewer Demons, and they are often clever enough to side-step bombs
  149.    and missiles hurled at them. One type of Sewer Demon is especially
  150.    nasty: when it gets hit by a bomb, it explodes into multiple lesser
  151.    monsters which attack immediately. These are preferably destroyed
  152.    from long range.

  167. CHEATS. Read here for help on solving the Drain Storm puzzle.
  168.         WARNING: This may reveal elements you would otherwise
  169.         discover on your own, thus lessening some of the surprise.
  170.         However, if you're stuck, these hints may get you going again.
  171.  
  172. 1) Finding the casino...
  173.    The casino is one level below the City. (The City is the first special
  174.    board, which can typically be found 4 to 8 levels below the top.)
  175.    Once in the City, locate the down-drain near the upper-right corner,
  176.    and go down... voila- the casino!
  177.  
  178. 2) Abyss...
  179.    Several special boards lie within the bottomless levels of the abyss.
  180.    These special boards may contain artifacts which are required
  181.    to solve the game. The abyss is entered through the down-drain near
  182.    the lower-left corner of the City.
  183.  
  184.    Beware, the abyss can be nasty. Boards in the abyss contain several
  185.    monster portals, including reinforced portals and portals which
  186.    deliver Sewer Demons into the attack. Although entering the abyss
  187.    is required to finish the game, do not enter until you are properly
  188.    armed. It is helpful to have a smart bomb or some repellent before
  189.    entering the abyss.

  191. 3) Treasure room...
  192.    There is a secret treasure room found below the Breakout Board.
  193.    This room is packed with treasure chests, wall to wall.
  194.    The Breakout Board is found 2 levels below the city. You can enter
  195.    from the Idol Room or the Moon Room. The down-drain to the treasure
  196.    room is blocked behind walls. However, as the Bulldozers of the
  197.    Breakout Board clear away crud, a lever will be uncovered. This lever
  198.    opens a passage to the down-drain to the treasure room.

  200.    WARNING: The treasure chests of the Treasure room are booby trapped
  201.    in a potentially deadly way. Be ready for a big fight.

  203. 4) Moon Key...
  204.    The Moon Key can be found in the labyrinth. This gives special access
  205.    to the treasures in the Moon Room. The labyrinth has many levels and
  206.    the passages get narrower and narrower. Be patient and well-equipped.

  208. 5) Smart Card...
  209.    This card is required to gain entrance to Gorloth's fortress, and the
  210.    power plant. It can be found in a special room within the layers of
  211.    the abyss.
  212.  
  213. 6) Emerald...
  214.    This artifact is required to get beyond the force field in the Idol
  215.    Room. The idol is missing one of its eyes, which are giant emeralds.
  216.    The emerald is being held captive in the Xoid fortress. Enter via
  217.    the Moon Room.

  219. 7) Getting extra treasure chests at the City...
  220.    A useful trick for gaining more treasure is to "create" treasure
  221.    chests. This can be accomplished by destroying all 3 regenerating
  222.    portals located in the center of the City. Occasionally when they
  223.    reappear, a treasure chest will also appear.
  224.  
  225. 8) Destroying Gorloth...
  226.    In order to Destroy Gorloth, he must be lured out into the open.
  227.    This is accomplished by destroying the energy core of the power
  228.    plant. This is heavily guarded and booby-trapped. Lots of missiles
  229.    and repellent are helpful here. Radio bombs are also extremely useful.

  231.    Once Gorloth attacks (and he won't be alone), get ready to unleash
  232.    a massive assault. He takes several hits before he's destroyed, and
  233.    bombs, bubbles and mines have no effect on him. He surrounds himself
  234.    with hoards of his minions. Unless you're equipped with devastating
  235.    firepower, you will regret you ever woke him...
