  62.    1.4. Digital signature

  64.         The setup program is signed with Pretty Good Privacy

  66.         the authenticity. The signature file should be included

  74. 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  76.    This version of Eraser runs on Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 and
  77.    later.

  79.    2.1. Libraries
  80.  
  81.         It may be necessary for you to update the following
  82.         dynamic link libraries before installing Eraser.
  83.  
  84.         These files were not included in the archive because of
  85.         their size and because they are part of Windows 98 and
  86.         are included with many applications including Internet
  87.         Explorer.

  89.         2.1.1. MFC42.dll and MSVCRT.dll

  91.                You must have Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC)
  92.                Libraries (version 6.00 or later) installed in
  93.                order to use Eraser.

  95.                If you do not have the files installed, or get an
  96.                error message (linked to a missing export...)

  107.                You must have version 4.72 or later version of
  108.                the Windows Common Control Library in order to
  109.                use the new Eraser user interface.

  111.                If you are using Windows 95 or NT and have not
  112.                installed Internet Explorer 4.01 or later, you
  113.                must download an update. Windows 98 comes with
  114.                the updated library.

  122. 3. HOW TO INSTALL & UNINSTALL
  123.  
  124.    3.1. Before installing
  125.  
  126.         Be sure to uninstall any previous version of Eraser
  127.         before installing. Also make sure you have the required
  128.         libraries installed before running setup (see section
  129.         2.1).
  130.  
  131.         If the setup program asks you to reboot Windows after
  132.         installation, you must do that before running Eraser.
  133.  
  134.    3.2. Installing
  135.  
  136.         SETUP.EXE is a self-extracting executable containing the
  137.         program files.
  138.  
  139.         Run SETUP.EXE to install Eraser. The setup program will
  140.         extract the files and copy them to a desired location.
  141.  
  142.    3.3. Help?
  143.  
  144.         After installing, you can open the help file (in the
  145.         Eraser directory) by double-clicking the ERASER.HLP
  146.         file.
  147.  
  148.         If the help file does not answer your question, do not
  149.         hesitate to contact the author (see section 5.1).

  151.         You can also get answers to some frequently asked
  152.         questions and read a step-by-step installation
  153.         instructions at Eraser home page (see section 5.2).

  155.    3.4. Uninstalling
  156.  
  157.         You can uninstall Eraser normally via Control Panel,
  158.         Add/Remove Programs. You should not remove the files
  159.         manually because the settings in the registry would not
  160.         be removed.

  163. 4. DESCRIPTION
  164.  
  165.    Eraser is an advanced security tool, which allows you to
  166.    completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by
  167.    overwriting it several times with carefully selected
  168.    patterns.
  169.  
  170.    You can drag and drop files and folders to the on-demand
  171.    eraser, use the convenient Explorer shell extension or use
  172.    the integrated scheduler to program overwriting of unused
  173.    disk space or, for example, browser cache files to happen
  174.    regularly, at night, during your lunch break, at weekends or
  175.    whenever you like.

  177.    The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter
  178.    Gutmann's paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and
  179.    Solid-State Memory" and they are selected to effectively
  180.    remove the magnetic remnants from the hard disk making it
  181.    impossible to recover the data.

  183.    Other methods include the one defined in the National
  184.    Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the US
  185.    Department of Defense and overwriting with pseudo-random data
  186.    up to one hundred times.
