A. Introduction
FreeSpace is an innovative utility that lets you recover precious disk space
without having to uninstall any program or delete files. FreeSpace
accomplishes this by optimizing the data stored on your disks (it
compresses files). The interesting aspect of the program is that it lets you
determine what should be compressed and occupy a minimum of disk
space and what should stay the way it currently is. Files and programs,
which are compressed with FreeSpace, appear and work exactly the same
as if they were not compressed.
FreeSpace works in Windows 95/98 (including OSR2 and FAT32
partitions) and NT 4.0 on NTFS partitions only. FreeSpace does not
currently support native DOS (boot into DOS). However, DOS in
Windows is supported.
The hardware requirements for FreeSpace are; any personal computer capable of
running Microsoft Windows, 8MB of RAM (Windows 95/98), 16MB of RAM (Windows
NT 4.0), 3MB of free disk space.
B. FreeSpace Components
After running the FreeSpace SETUP program, you'll find shortcuts to the
FreeSpace components in the FreeSpace 1.0 group in your Start menu.
1. The main component of FreeSpace is a driver that is loaded when
Windows starts. This driver allows compressed files to be displayed
and accessed as if they were not compressed. This driver is only
loaded in Windows 95/98. Under Windows NT 4.0, FreeSpace uses
the native compression capabilities of the NTFS file system.
2. The FreeSpace Manager includes the QuickSpace Wizard,
Compression Wizard, Decompression Wizard, FreeSpace Settings,
FreeSpace Disk Checkup, and EasyUpdate.
3. The Compression Wizard helps you find files and folders on your
system which are excellent candidates for compression either because
they have not been accessed for a long time, or because they compress
extremely well, or because they will save you a lot of space if
compressed.
4. The Decompression Wizard helps you find compressed items on your
system and lets you uncompress them.
5. The FreeSpace Analyzer lets you analyze your drives and displays
folder size information. It is a great tool to help you better understand
what components are taking a lot of space on your system and to find
out what space they would occupy if compressed.
6. FreeSpace also provides context menus (Compress and Decompress)
which let you compress or uncompress files and folders you select in
Explorer. Another context menu (Folder Checkup) lets you perform a
checkup of the current folder to verify that all the compressed items
are in good shape (Windows95 only). Finally, you'll also find a menu
(Convert Zip to FreeSpace) which lets you convert a Zip archive into a
FreeSpace compressed folder.
7. The Properties dialog of files and folders has an additional tab labeled
FreeSpace that displays statistics about the selected files and folders.
C. Uninstalling FreeSpace
If FreeSpace is incompatible with something on your system or if you wish
to uninstall FreeSpace for some other reason, you can run the included
Uninstall program. You can do this from the "Add/Remove Programs"
control panel applet or by running the "Uninstall FreeSpace" program from
the FreeSpace group in the Start Menu.
IMPORTANT: If while using FreeSpace you have compressed some files
or folders, you may want to uncompress them, since you will not have
access to them without FreeSpace running.
D. Support
Please let us know if you experience any problem with FreeSpace, we will
promptly help you. We are also interested in the ideas you may have about
new features or any part of the program that could be improved. Thank
you.
