  4. To safely use secure-FTP with Serv-U, using SSL/TLS to encrypt the FTP
  5. session and file tranfers, you *MUST* create your own certificate. To do
  6. this go to the 'Server | Settings | SSL Certificate' tab and fill in your
  7. own entries for the certificate presented there (you can get context
  8. sensitive help for this by pressing F1).
  9.  
  10. The reason for this has to do with the way SSL works. Associated with the
  11. certificate are two encryption keys named "private key" and "public key".
  12. To keep FTP traffic secret the private key has to be a secret. The default
  13. certificate that gets installed has the same keys for every installation
  14. and is thus no secret.

  17. THE SERV-U PROMO MESSAGE

  71. Serv-U comes in three editions: A free "Personal Edition" that provides all
  72. the functionality needed for personal home use. Next is "Standard Edition",
  73. intended as the file sharing solution for most personal users, there is
  74. also a "Standard Secure Edition" adding secure-FTP through SSL to the mix.
  75. For business users there is "Professional Edition". Finally the
  76. top-of-the-line is "Corporate Edition" for corporate FTP sites that need

  80. TRY-OUT

  83. Serv-U is trialware, which means you can try it before you decide to
  84. register. Feel free to pass the try-out version around, but please do not
  85. distribute any registration keys. The 30 day trial version is fully
  86. functional and identical to "Professional Edition". After the trial time
  87. has expired Serv-U automatically becomes a "Personal Edition" server.

  90. INSTALLATION/UPGRADING
  91. ======================

  93. Serv-U comes as a self-extracting installation executable. Follow the
  94. interactive setup and it will do the hard work for you. An uninstall
  95. program is also included which makes complete removal of all Serv-U files
  96. easy.

  98. To upgrade from a previous version the same installation program can be
  99. used. It will automatically look for and upgrade your existing installation
  100. of Serv-U. Of course, it never hurts to make a backup of your Serv-U
  101. directory before upgrading.

  104. NOTES FOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS
  105. ===============================

  107. The self-extracting installation executable is a zip-file in itself which
  108. can be unpacked using any unzip utility. This lets one scan the contained
  109. executables for viruses if needed. Also, instead of the interactive setup
  110. the installer can be run silently. The online help file has more
  111. information relevant to system administrators, such as startup options,
  112. installer  options, and network installation.
