  3. PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT CAREFULLY; it contains 
  4. important installation information about Norton Internet 
  5. Security and Norton Personal Firewall.  
  6.  
  7. Note that the release notes may refer to features that 
  8. are not in the product you have installed, as it covers 
  9. three products with different features.

  33. Operation with Local Area Networks

  35. After installation, Norton Internet Security will block 
  36. all file and print sharing on your computer.  To 
  37. configure NIS to selectively allow certain computers the 
  38. access they require to use file sharing and other 
  39. services, use the Internet Zone Control from the main 
  40. interface or the Security Assistant that runs following 
  41. install.

  43. You should also run the new Home Networking Wizard 
  44. (accessible via the Security Assistant) to configure NIS 
  45. to recognize your local network and treat your computers 
  46. appropriately.  This will increase the ease of use of 
  47. NIS/NPF without compromising your security on the web.

  50. Installation with the Microsoft Installer
  51. --------------------------------------------------------
  52. The Microsoft Installer is a new component for Windows, 
  53. and is required to install Norton Internet Security or 
  54. Norton Personal Firewall.  If your operating system does 
  55. not already have this installed, it will automatically 
  56. be added.  The MSI installer requires about 25 megabytes 
  57. of space temporarily to install, but will clean up after 
  58. the install is complete.  On Windows 98 Second Edition, 
  59. and possibly other conditions, the MSI installer may 
  60. need to reboot the system before Install continues.

  63. Installation on removable drives, firewire drives, etc.
  64. --------------------------------------------------------
  65. This product should not be installed on a removable 
  66. drive, firewire (IEEE 1394) drive that may be 
  67. disconnected, USB drive, network drive, hot swappable 
  68. drive, or any form of storage which may not be 
  69. accessible at all times.

  72. Installation on multi-boot systems
  73. --------------------------------------------------------
  74. Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall can be 
  75. used on systems that boot multiple operating systems on 
  76. the same primary partition, such as having Windows 95 
  77. and Windows NT both on the system.  However, if you use 
  78. a dual boot system, you must install the product into 
  79. different directories on each operating system - do not 
  80. attempt to use the same directory, or you may have 
  81. conflicts.

  84. Installation on machines running server services
  85. --------------------------------------------------------
  86. Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall are not
  87. supported on server versions of Windows NT or Windows 
  88. 2000, but can be installed and operated.

  90. Please review the technical notes on configuring the 
  91. product to support various server processes which need 
  92. access to the Internet during the system boot up when 
  93. firewall alerts cannot show.  Please note that this can 
  94. affect a Windows NT Workstation or Windows 2000 
  95. Professional installation running IIS or other server- 
  96. oriented services.

  104. Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall are not 
  105. supported on XP Server or the 64 bit version of XP.

  108. Passwords are case sensitive
  109. --------------------------------------------------------
  110. With Norton Internet Security with parental controls 
  111. installed, passwords for user accounts are case 
  112. sensitive. The passwords abc$123, Abc$123, and ABC$123 
  113. are each considered a different password. Make sure your 
  114. passwords are consistent.

  117. Updating web site blocking list on older computers
  118. --------------------------------------------------------
  119. With Norton Internet Security with parental controls on 
  120. older machines (usually with less than 48MB of RAM), the 
  121. LiveUpdate process for updating the web site blocking 
  122. list can take a very long time to update (sometimes 
  123. multiple hours).  If you have a limited amount of RAM, 
  124. shut down as many running applications as you can before 
  125. doing a LiveUpdate, and if you do find that it takes a 
  126. very long time, do LiveUpdates when you will not be 
  127. using your computer.

  130. Web Browser Compatibility
  131. --------------------------------------------------------
  132. Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall 
  133. require Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.01 with IE 
  134. service pack 1 to be installed to operate.
  135.  
  136. Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall 
  137. will function with Netscape 4.0 or above, Opera, and 
  138. other web browsers, but do require IE 4.01sp1 to be 
  139. installed.

  141. Please note that some versions of Internet Explorer have 
  142. a version number of 4.72, but are actually version 4.01.  
  143. If the Norton Internet Security install informs you that 
  144. you need a newer version of Internet Explorer, please 
  145. attempt to update your Internet Explorer before running 
  146. the setup program again.

  149. Uninstalling Norton Internet Security
  150. --------------------------------------------------------
  151. Norton Internet Security hooks into the network setup of 
  152. a computer, and has some complex actions that must be 
  153. taken when uninstalling.  It is not recommended that 
  154. uninstall products (such as Norton CleanSweep) be used 
  155. to remove Norton Internet Security, it should only be 
  156. removed with its own uninstaller.  This can be accessed 
  157. from the Start Menu or from the Control Panel. Please 
  158. note that a supervisor account must be loaded in Norton 
  159. Internet Security before an uninstall can be done,
  160. except in the case of free trialware products which can
  161. be uninstalled by any user.

  164. LiveAdvisor interaction with older Norton products
  165. --------------------------------------------------------
  166. If you will have both this new Norton product installed 
  167. and any 2000 version Norton product installed on your 
  168. computer, the LiveAdvisor button on the menu bar of your 
  169. 2000 version Norton product will be removed. As 
  170. LiveAdvisor is no longer being used for information 
  171. delivery, this is no loss in functionality to you. As 
  172. was outlined in the final LiveAdvisor messages, Symantec 
  173. has replaced the LiveAdvisor delivery mechanism with 
  174. information on the Symantec web site (www.symantec.com) 
  175. and product-specific newsletters (see the web page at 
  176. http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/bulletin/index.html).

  179. Upgrading Operating Systems after installing NIS
  180. --------------------------------------------------------
  181. If you install Norton Internet Security or Norton 
  182. Personal Firewall on a Windows 95, 98, or Me system and 
  183. then upgrade to Windows XP, 2000 or another NT based 
  184. operating system, the product may not function properly. 
  185. To fix this, simply uninstall Norton Internet Security 
  186. or Norton Personal Firewall and re-install it.  This 
  187. will fix issues such as disappearing accounts and errors 
  188. on startup caused by the OS upgrade.

  191. Clear your Browser Cache after installing
  192. --------------------------------------------------------
  193. After installing Norton Internet Security or Norton 
  194. Personal Firewall, it is recommended that you clear the 
  195. cache in your web browser.  Cached pages may contain 
  196. content that the product would filter for your 
  197. protection or preference, and they will not be filtered 
  198. on cached content.

  200. Users of Internet Explorer 4.72 may find a script error 
  201. problem after installing NIS/NPF, which should go away 
  202. after clearing the cache.
