  26.                            ABOUT LIVEUPDATE
  27. **********************************************************************
  28. LiveUpdate is the Symantec technology that permits an installed 
  29. Symantec product to connect to a Symantec server over the Internet to 
  30. check for program and other updates such as virus definitions and URL 
  31. lists.
  32.  
  33. When updates are available, LiveUpdate downloads them to your computer
  34. and installs them, keeping your Symantec software up to date. All 
  35. updates that are downloaded with this version of LiveUpdate are 
  36. checked for a valid digital signature.
  37.  
  38. Certain types of content may require a subscription and so LiveUpdate 
  39. will only download subscription content if a valid subscription is 
  40. found on your machine.
  41.

  43.                            SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  59. recommended. Some features of LiveUpdate will not be available on all

  63.                               WHAT'S NEW?
  64. **********************************************************************
  65. 1. Express Mode user interface. This interface is provided primarily 
  66. for use in corporate environments. The purpose of this UI is to 
  67. provide status updates only to the user.
  68.  
  69. 2. Support for HTTP proxies. This feature can be useful if your 
  70. Firewall or Proxy server requires user authentication. Note that only 
  71. support for basic authentication schemes is provided at this time.
  72.  
  73. 3. Reduced catalog file downloads. This will result in very 
  74. significant download file size savings for users that get their 
  75. updates directly from Symantec servers. Users that are configured to 
  76. point to an internal non-Symantec server will not be affected at this 
  77. time. The purpose of this feature is to reduce the level of Internet 
  78. traffic generated by LiveUpdate in unmanaged environments, i.e. 
  79. environments that do not use LUAdmin or Symantec System Center.
  80.  
  81. 4. Proactive notification of product patches. This feature is only 
  82. available to users of our latest retail products. When a critical 
  83. patch becomes available to Symantec program executables, LiveUpdate 
  84. will notify the user via an alert.
  85.  
  86. 5. Upgraded installer. We have upgraded our Installer to the latest 
  87. release available.
  88.  
  89. 6. Re-encryption of passwords in the settings file. Previous versions 
  90. of LiveUpdate did not re-encrypt passwords that were edited in the 
  91. settings file. Now, LiveUpdate 1.80 will re-encrypt all user names and
  92. passwords in the settings file.
  93.  
  94. 7. Many of the error messages displayed by LiveUpdate now have error
  95. numbers. This will make it much easier to look-up the causes of 
  96. specific errors and their resolution on Symantec's Support website.
  97.  
  98. 8. Ability to disable the control panel icon. It's now possible to
  99. enable a special setting to deny access to the LiveUpdate control
  100. panel options. When this setting is enabled, the 'Configure' button
  101. on the Interactive UI is also disabled.
  102.  
  103. 9. Updated LiveUpdate Administrator's manual. This documentation has 
  104. been updated with more detailed information on the new features of
  105. this release of LiveUpdate. The manual also describes methods to
  106. distribute new settings to existing or new installations of LiveUpdate
  107. in order to enable Express Mode, or to disable the control panel 
  108. options.
  109.  
  110. **********************************************************************
  111.         SWITCHING BETWEEN INTERACTIVE MODE AND EXPRESS MODE
  112. **********************************************************************
  113. There is a new option in the LiveUpdate Control Panel to allow users
  114. to switch between Interactive Mode and Express Mode. This switch is
  115. available on the 'General' tab. 
  116.  
  117. To switch to Express Mode, open the Windows Control Panel and double-
  118. click the LiveUpdate Control Panel icon. The General tab will be 
  119. displayed by default. Select the Express Mode radio button. You can 
  120. then select how you want LiveUpdate to start. Click the OK button. The
  121. next time you run LiveUpdate it will run in Express Mode.
  122.  
  123. To switch back to Interactive Mode, open the Windows Control Panel and
  124. double-click the LiveUpdate Control Panel icon. The General tab will 
  125. be displayed by default. Select the Interactive Mode radio button. 
  126. Click the OK button. The next time you run LiveUpdate it will run in 
  127. Interactive Mode.
  128.  
  129. Note that the LiveUpdate Control Panel options are also normally 
  130. available through the 'Configure' button on the first screen of the 
  131. Interactive Mode user interface.
  132.

  134.                               PROXY SERVERS
  135. **********************************************************************
  136. Most Internet users don't need to configure their computers to use a 
  137. proxy server, however some ISPs and companies require you to connect 
  138. to the Internet through a proxy server. So, we've made it easier than 
  139. ever to configure LiveUpdate to use a Proxy via the LiveUpdate Control
  140. Panel.
  141.  
  142. Note: If you do not know what a proxy server is, it may be best to 
  143. only change these options when instructed to do so by a network 
  144. administrator.
  145.  
  146. You can setup LiveUpdate to use HTTP or FTP Proxy servers by selecting
  147. the appropriate tab in the Control Panel, and then choosing the second
  148. radio button to customize the settings.
  149.  
  150. By default, LiveUpdate will use the same proxy server settings that 
  151. you have setup for use with Internet Explorer.
  152.  
  153. Note: LiveUpdate uses HTTP for file transfers by default, however it
  154. will fail over to FTP if it is unable to communicate via HTTP.
  155.  
  156. If your proxy server requires authorization for outside access, you 
  157. can also enter a user name and password for HTTP proxy servers.  
  158.  
  159. If you have any difficulty configuring your proxy settings, contact 
  160. your network administrator for assistance.  Each network is different,
  161. so only they can help you with this step.
  162.  
  163. Important security consideration:
  164. ---------------------------------
  165. When provided username and password information, LiveUpdate will store
  166. this in its settings file in encrypted form. However, when this 
  167. information is sent to a proxy server it is sent in an encoded but 
  168. unencrypted form. You should note that it is sometimes possible to 
  169. capture data packets on the Internet or on your LAN, and therefore 
  170. it's possible that your password data may be viewed by others during 
  171. transmission to the proxy server. If you have any concerns please 
  172. contact your network administrator.

  175.                   VERSION & DIGITAL SIGNATURE INFORMATION
  176. **********************************************************************
  177. There are two easy ways to determine the version of LiveUpdate that
  178. you have installed.
  179. 1. Open Windows Explorer and locate the file luall.exe. This is 
  180. usually located in the LiveUpdate client installation folder 
  181. (\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate). Right click on this file and 
  182. select Properties. On the Version tab the File version information 
  183. will be listed.
  184.  
  185. 2. When you start LiveUpdate, go to the icon in the top right-hand
  186. corner of the LiveUpdate dialog, click it, and then select 
  187. "About LiveUpdate". The full product version is listed.
  188.  
  189. You may also right-click on any of the LiveUpdate executable files 
  190. (*.exe, *.dll) in the folder noted above and select the "Digital 
  191. Signatures" tab to view the Symantec Digital Signature on the files.
  192.  
  193. **********************************************************************
  194.                            RUNNING LIVEUPDATE
  195. **********************************************************************
  196. There are several ways to run LiveUpdate.
  197.  
  198. 1. Through your Symantec product. Most Symantec products which use 
  199. LiveUpdate, offer a LiveUpdate button. In Norton SystemWorks, for 
  200. example, you can run LiveUpdate from the SystemWorks Integrator. This 
  201. will automatically download updates for all Symantec products, which 
  202. use our One Button Update technology. 
  203. 2. You can also run LiveUpdate from the folder created under
  204. the start menu by your Symantec product(s).
  205. 3. You can go to a command prompt and run "LUAll.exe", or create a
  206. shortcut to this program on your desktop 
  207. (\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LUAll.exe).
  208.  
  209. Note: Some product updates may only be retrieved by selecting the
  210. LiveUpdate option from within that product (option 1).
  211.

  213.                           UPDATING LIVEUPDATE
  214. **********************************************************************
  215. Sometimes even the update program needs an update.  LiveUpdate will 
  216. automatically check to see if there are any available updates to 
  217. itself each time it is run.  It should update itself transparently 
  218. (without any extra input), but in certain rare cases may require that 
  219. you run LiveUpdate one additional time to complete your session after 
  220. it has finished its update.  If this is required, it will tell you.
  221.

  226.                    INSTALLING/UNINSTALLING LIVEUPDATE
  227. **********************************************************************
  228. All Symantec products, which use LiveUpdate, install it themselves, 
  229. but if you encounter a problem with LiveUpdate that you or Technical 
  230. Support believe to be the result of an install problem or corrupted 
  231. files, you can reinstall LiveUpdate easily.
  232.  
  233. To reinstall, locate LUSETUP.EXE on your computer or on the CD-ROM 
  234. containing your Symantec product. You may also download the latest 
  235. version from the Internet at:
  236.

  239. Once the file is on your system, double click the icon.  You will be 
  240. asked if you wish to install LiveUpdate.  Answer yes, and it will 
  241. automatically reinstall.  Your previous settings will be saved, and 
  242. you will still be able to run LiveUpdate from any Symantec product 
  243. without further configuration.
  244.  
  245. If you wish to uninstall LiveUpdate, please note that you will no 
  246. longer be able to receive updates to your Symantec products.  
  247.  
  248. To uninstall LiveUpdate:
  249. 1. From the Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel.
  250. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.  
  251. 3. Select LiveUpdate from the list and then click Add/Remove.
  252.  
  253. To reinstall LiveUpdate at any time, find the LUSETUP.EXE at the above
  254. URL and simply double-click it.
  255.  
  256. **********************************************************************
  257.         LIVEUPDATE CONFIGURATION & LOG FILES
  258. **********************************************************************
  259. LiveUpdate stores all of its configuration and logging information in 
  260. the following files:
  261.  
  262. log.liveupdate            - Log file
  263. product.catalog.liveupdate    - List of installed Symantec products
  264. settings.liveupdate        - Configuration settings
  265.  
  266. LiveUpdate will also keep backup copies of these files by adding a 
  267. number to the beginning of the filename. The higher the number the 
  268. older the file.
  269.  
  270. These files are normally located in the 'Application Data' folder on 
  271. your machine. The location of this folder is Operating System 
  272. dependent:
  273.  
  274. Windows 9x 
  275. \windows\all users\application data\Symantec\liveupdate
  276.  
  277. Windows NT/2K/XP
  278. \Documents & Settings\all users\application data\Symantec\liveupdate
  279. or
  280. \Windows\profiles\all users\application data\Symantec\liveupdate
  281.  
  282. Some other Windows XP systems
  283. \Documents & Settings\all users.windows\application
  284.  data\Symantec\liveupdate
  285.  
  286. If you cannot find this folder it's best to search for one of the
  287. filenames noted above.
  288.  
  289. LiveUpdate does not remove its configuration or log files when you
  290. uninstall.
  291.  
  292. **********************************************************************
  293.                       USING AOL (America Online)
  294. **********************************************************************
  295. Symantec has documentation in our online knowledgebase that can assist
  296. you in using LiveUpdate with America Online.  Please go to the

  301. An important issue in configuring LiveUpdate to work with AOL is to 
  302. first make sure you are using a recent version of the AOL software.
  303.  
  304. Note: Symantec is not liable for any phone charges incurred when 
  305. making this dial up connection. Don't forget to close your Internet 
  306. connection when you have completed your LiveUpdate session.
  307.  
  308. **********************************************************************
  309.                         TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  310. **********************************************************************
  311. LiveUpdate uses three possible methods, or transports, for retrieving 
  312. updates and installing them.
  313.  
  314. 1.  HTTP
  315. We primarily use HTTP to download files from the Internet. Our primary
  316. servers are accessed via the following domains:
  317. http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com
  318. http://liveupdate.symantec.com
  319.  
  320. 2.  FTP
  321. If LiveUpdate is unable to connect via HTTP, it will attempt to use 
  322. the older FTP method automatically. You may need to configure 
  323. LiveUpdate to use an FTP proxy for FTP to work correctly. Our FTP
  324. servers are accessed via the following domain:
  325. ftp://update.symantec.com
  326.  
  327. 3.  LAN (Local Area Network)
  328. Corporate customers may wish to create their own internal LiveUpdate 
  329. servers to ease bandwidth usage. More information about the LAN 
  330. transport is available from within the LiveUpdate Administration 
  331. Utility.
  332.  
  333. NOTE: If LiveUpdate finds the LAN transport file (s32luhl1.dll) in the
  334. same directory that it is being run from, it will search for a LAN 
  335. entry in its settings file and use that transport instead on the FTP 
  336. and HTTP transports.
  337.  
  338. **********************************************************************
  339.                             KNOWN ISSUES
  340. **********************************************************************
  341. 1. Password Security: Please see the Proxy Servers section above for 
  342. more details on known issues with transmission of password 
  343. information.
  344.  
  345. 2. Users of LiveUpdate with Norton AntiVirus 2001 and later, should
  346. note that the Automatic LiveUpdate component may be configured to 
  347. check for virus definition updates in the background. Normally, 
  348. LiveUpdate will only do this when it detects an open Internet 
  349. connection, however some devices, dialup routers for example, can be 
  350. configured to create an Internet connection when they detect this 
  351. activity. Users should note that this could result in unexpected 
  352. connection charges.
  353.  
  354. NOTE: ISDN on demand Internet access and Automatic LiveUpdate. 
  355. ISDN charges are generally higher than standard analog phone line 
  356. charges so users of these systems are asked to pay particular 
  357. attention to this issue.
  358.  
  359. 3. Some "Ad Blocking" software products may deny LiveUpdate access to
  360. the file servers from which it downloads updates. If you are using 
  361. this type of software you should disable it if you notice problems 
  362. downloading LiveUpdate packages. Once you have finished with 
  363. LiveUpdate you can re-enable the "Ad Blocking" software. Alternatively
  364. you can try to configure your software to allow access to the 
  365. LiveUpdate servers noted in the section above.
  366.  
  367. 4. If you use defragmentation software and you use the Automatic 
  368. LiveUpdate feature, you should note that this may cause the 
  369. defragmentation software to restart every time Automatic LiveUpdate 
  370. checks for an Internet connection (usually every 5 minutes). If you 
  371. notice this behavior while defragmenting your hard drive it is 
  372. suggested that you pause the task scheduler until defragmentation has 
  373. completed.
  374.  
  375. 5. Some 'Zip' utilities may intercept the updates that are being 
  376. downloaded by LiveUpdate and cause problems while LiveUpdate is 
  377. trying to uncompress these files. For example, you may see the 
  378. following error when using the ZipMagic utility from Mijenix: "Can Not
  379. Read The List of New Updates".
  380.  
  381. You can work around this problem by temporarily turning off the Zip 
  382. Folders feature in ZipMagic. Other Zip utilities should provide a way
  383. to temporarily disable themselves also. For more information, visit

  386. 6. Some combinations of Windows NT 4.0 running on Intel Pentium 4 
  387. processors cause LiveUpdate to display a LU6003 error. To resolve this
  388. issue you should install/re-install NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 or higher.
  389.  
  390. 7. On some Windows NT/2K systems, the LiveUpdate control panel icon 
  391. may not work properly. This may be because the LiveUpdate installer 
  392. was unable to upgrade the old control panel functions. To resolve this
  393. problem, try restarting your computer and deleting the file 
  394. S32LUCP1.DLL from the \windows\system32 folder. Note that the 
  395. operating system will lock this file if you try to open the control 
  396. panel before deleting the file. Restarting the machine will free the 
  397. lock on the file. When the file above is removed the new control panel
  398. functions will be available.
  399.
