  20. 1. BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM!
  21. -----------------------
  22. Remember to back up your hard drives before using PartitionMagic.
  23. While PartitionMagic has been thoroughly tested, power failures, 
  24. operating system bugs, and hardware design bugs can put your data 
  25. at risk. BEFORE USING ANY UTILITY THAT MAKES SUCH EXTENSIVE 
  26. CHANGES TO YOUR HARD DISK, YOU SHOULD BACK UP YOUR DATA.

  28. To back up your system, we recommend using PowerQuest Drive 
  29. Image(R). Drive Image is a disk imaging tool that lets you create
  30. an image of your entire system that can easily be restored. 
  31. Having a backup lets you run PartitionMagic with the security 
  32. of knowing that you can get your system back up and running 
  33. if you run into problems.

  37. 2. GENERAL USAGE NOTES
  38. ----------------------
  39.  
  40. - PartitionMagic does not support Windows NT Server or 
  41.   Windows 2000 Servers.
  42.  
  43. - Be aware that there is no undo (after clicking Apply) if you 
  44.   merge two FAT or FAT32 partitions. You must be particularly 
  45.   careful not to merge two primary partitions that include 
  46.   operating systems, as your computer will not be bootable if 
  47.   you do.
  48.  
  49. - Progress bars are an estimation only and may pause for several 
  50.   minutes, even though PartitionMagic is still working correctly.
  51.   If you think your computer has locked up, please be patient and 
  52.   allow PartitionMagic to finish the operation.
  53.  
  54. - You should set up removable media drives so that they are the 
  55.   last drives on your system. Drives are assigned priorities as 
  56.   follows: primary master, primary slave, secondary master, 
  57.   secondary slave. You should not have a fixed hard drive 
  58.   set up as the secondary master if you have a removable media 
  59.   drive set up as the primary slave. If you have two IDE
  60.   controllers, you should connect removable media drives to 
  61.   the second controller, after any hard drives. If you have a
  62.   RAID configuration, disconnect any removable media (such as 
  63.   a Zip drive) before using PartitionMagic. If you do not 
  64.   configure removable media drives as the last drives, you 
  65.   will see disk numbering inconsistencies in the PartitionMagic 
  66.   interface, and the wizards will not work on your system.
  67.  
  68. - Bad Sector Checking is OFF by default. PartitionMagic ships 
  69.   with bad sector checking turned OFF by default. Modern hard 
  70.   disks are designed to avoid bad sectors automatically.  
  71.   However, if you feel that bad sectors may be a problem on your 
  72.   system, turn on bad sector checking (by unchecking the 
  73.   appropriate boxes in the "Skip bad sector checks" list box in 
  74.   Preferences). Turning on bad sector checking ensures that data 
  75.   is not moved or copied to bad disk sectors; however, this 
  76.   causes the create, move, and resize operations to slow down 
  77.   considerably. Another way to verify that there are no bad 
  78.   sectors on your disk is to run the operating system check 
  79.   utility (CheckDisk or ScanDisk) and do a surface scan before 
  80.   launching PartitionMagic.
  81.  
  82. - A non-Asian language version of PartitionMagic should never 
  83.   be used on an Asian language version of Windows NT/2000/XP, 
  84.   as this may cause corruption of filenames and partition/
  85.   volume set labels.
  86.  
  87. - You cannot use PQBoot for Windows (a utility included with 
  88.   PartitionMagic) unless there is at least one primary 
  89.   partition on the first hard disk.

  93. 3. KNOWN ISSUES - WINDOWS NT/2000/XP ONLY
  94. -----------------------------------------
  95.  
  96. - PartitionMagic does not support volume sets, stripe sets, stripe 
  97.   sets with parity, or partitions located on disk mirror/duplex 
  98.   sets configured using Windows NT Disk Administrator. Under 
  99.   Windows 2000/XP, PartitionMagic supports standard partitions 
  100.   located on basic disk sets only.
  101.  
  102. - In a configuration with mixed IDE and SCSI hard drives, Windows 
  103.   NT does not always see the boot drive as the first physical hard 
  104.   disk. PartitionMagic displays drives in the order Windows NT 
  105.   reports them. As a result, you may see your boot device as Drive 
  106.   1, 2, and so forth. This does not cause problems for 
  107.   PartitionMagic except when setting a new active partition. Also, 
  108.   PartitionMagic may incorrectly report that there is no active 
  109.   partition on your system. To change your active partition, be 
  110.   sure that you identify which drive is the boot drive. 
  111.  
  112. - You should not change the drive letter originally assigned to 
  113.   the Windows NT/2000/XP boot partition (the partition where Windows 
  114.   is installed). Changing the drive letter to anything but its 
  115.   original designation will cause severe boot problems and may 
  116.   cause your computer to be unbootable.
  117.  
  118. - Under Windows 2000 or Windows XP, if you perform operations 
  119.   on partitions that include mount points, you must restore the 
  120.   mount points after the operations are complete.
  121.  
  122. - Error 183: Init Failed. If you attempt to run PartitionMagic on 
  123.   a Windows 2000/XP Professional machine where the boot partition
  124.   (the partition where Windows 2000/XP Professional is installed) 
  125.   is on a dynamic disk, you will receive the following error message: 
  126.   "Init failed: Error 183. Unable to identify the Windows partition." 
  127.   To solve this problem, Windows 2000/XP must be installed on a 
  128.   basic disk.
  129.  
  130. - Error 184: If you encounter error 184 when initializing 
  131.   PartitionMagic, run Disk Administrator (Windows NT) or Disk 
  132.   Management (Windows 2000/XP), then start PartitionMagic again.
  133.  
  134. - If the System Restore feature of Windows XP is monitoring a drive, 
  135.   PartitionMagic cannot perform operations on that drive in Windows. 
  136.   Instead it must drop down to boot mode to perform the operations. 
  137.   The operation will still be successful. 
  138.  
  139. - To uninstall PartitionMagic under Windows XP, you must be logged 
  140.   in as the user who originally installed the product.  If the user 
  141.   account has been deleted, you must remove PartitionMagic 
  142.   manually by cleaning out the PartitionMagic install directory and 
  143.   registry.

  147. 4. KNOWN ISSUES - WINDOWS 9x ONLY
  148. ---------------------------------
  149.  
  150. - On a computer with a dual boot, if you have more than 20 
  151.   partitions, you may not be able to launch PartitionMagic from  
  152.   Windows 9x.
  153.  
  154. - If you create an NTFS partition under Windows 9x, it will be 
  155.   created with NTFS version 3.0, which is not compatible with 
  156.   Windows NT 4.0.  To create an NTFS version 1.2 partition that will 
  157.   work with Windows NT 4.0, run PartitionMagic under Windows NT 4.0 
  158.   or from the rescue disks and create the partition.

  160. - Under Windows 9x, PartitionMagic and the operating system may assign 
  161.   different drive letters to USB, USB2, and FireWire drives. This 
  162.   problem is a result of the inconsistent way the operating system 
  163.   assigns drive letters for removable devices. If the drive 
  164.   letters appear differently in PartitionMagic than they do in "My 
  165.   Computer," PartitionMagic can still work on the removable drive.

  168. 5. UNINSTALLING WINDOWS ME
  169. --------------------------
  170. If you use PartitionMagic (or FDISK or any other partitioning
  171. software), you should be aware of the following Microsoft warning.
  172.  
  173. IMPORTANT: You should not attempt to uninstall Windows Me if the 
  174. partition information for your hard disk or disks has changed 
  175. since you last installed Windows Me successfully.  Windows Me 
  176. creates a backup copy of your partition information in the 
  177. Suhdlog.dat file at the end of a successful installation, and 
  178. Uninstal.exe restores the partition information listed in the 
  179. Suhdlog.dat file to your hard disk during the uninstall.  If the 
  180. partition information on your hard disk or disks has changed 
  181. since you last installed successfully (specifically, since the 
  182. Suhdlog.dat file was created), then you might experience partial 
  183. or complete data loss as a result of attempting to uninstall 
  184. Windows Me.
