SECTION 0. System Requirements
---------------------------------------------------------------
A. Minimum System Requirements
---------------------------------------------------------------
To install and run Borland C++Builder, your system must meet the
following minimum requirements:
* Intel Pentium class system with 90 MHz or higher
(For Professional, a 486 DX2 100MHz or higher is required)
* Microsoft Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3)
* At least 175Mb free hard disk space (300Mb recommended)
(Note: On some systems, the amount of hard disk space required
may be greater than 300Mb)
* System memory 32Mb (64Mb recommended)
* Mouse or other Windows pointing device
* VGA or higher resolution
* CD-ROM drive
B. Compact Installation
---------------------------------------------------------------
A minimum installation of Borland C++Builder includes Borland
C++Builder, as well as the Borland Database Engine, and is
called the "Compact" install by the installation program.
A compact installation of Borland C++Builder will take
approximately 175Mb of hard disk space. To perform a compact
installation, choose "Compact" on the installation options page.
The files not included in this install are:
WinSight32
Sample Programs
Visual Component Library Source
Team Development Support
Borland Shared Files
Image Editor
SQL Builder
Image Files
Example database data
Database Desktop
SQL Links
OWL support files
MFC support files
MS SDK Help Files
VCL Source
Internet Controls
Sample ActiveX Controls
You can add these files later by running a 'Custom Install' and
selecting the items you want to add.
C. Typical Installation
---------------------------------------------------------------
A typical installation includes the most common components
developers need for application development. This takes
approximately 210Mb of hard disk space. The following files
are not included:
OWL support files
MFC support files
MS SDK Help Files
D. Full Installation
---------------------------------------------------------------
A full installation of C++Builder includes all tools available,
the Windows-hosted IDE, and fully supports 32-bit Windows
application development. This is called the "Full" install and
requires approximately 300Mb of hard disk space.
NOTE: Not all options are available in all versions.
E. Custom Installation
---------------------------------------------------------------
A custom installation lets you determine exactly which components
you want to install, and lets you install additional components
after an installation has already been completed. This option
begins with the 'Full Install' configuration and allows you to
remove components at will.
F. Installation Conflicts
---------------------------------------------------------------
To avoid potential conflicts when installing system files,
we recommend that you close down all other running applications
before installing Borland C++Builder. To list applications
running on your machine, either:
- Under Windows 95/98:
Look at the taskbar on which the Start button is located.
OR
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete (once) and look at your Close Program
list (click Cancel to exit the list).
- Under Windows NT 4.0:
Look at the taskbar on which the Start button is located.
OR
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete (once), and choose Task Manager to
see the list of programs running on your system
(choose File|Exit Task Manager to exit the list).

SECTION 1. Installation Notes
---------------------------------------------------------------
A. Uninstall C++Builder 3 Before Installing C++Builder 4
---------------------------------------------------------------
You should uninstall C++Builder 3 before installing C++Builder 4.
DO NOT install C++Builder 4 and then uninstall C++Builder 3. If you
first install C++Builder 4 and then uninstall C++Builder 3 on Windows
NT4, the palettes for the different tabs will be missing. You should
also back up your existing IDAPI.CFG file before installation.
B. Known Installation Issues
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. Installation sometimes reports misleading "out of disk
space" error message.
If you install Borland C++Builder on a drive other than
the drive on which Windows resides, check to be sure that
you have more than 32Mb of disk space free on your Windows
drive (usually C:). Otherwise, the installation program
may report that you have run out of disk space. This does
not necessarily mean that you ran out of space on the drive
on which you are installing Borland C++Builder. It usually
means that you ran out of space on the Windows drive,
because C++Builder must install several files into the
Windows directory structure.
Also note: If you install separate components on different
drives on your machine, the disk space reported per drive
and for each component may be incorrect. You should
manually check that you have enough disk space for each
component before attempting to install it.
2. Install program unable to create groups with certain
characters.
In the installation, when you get to the screen where you
can specify the name of the program group you want to be
created, you cannot include parentheses '(' and ')' or
commas ',' in the group name.
3. Problems using Symantec's Norton Navigator.
If you have Symantec's Norton Desktop for Windows 95
installed and you launch INSTALL.EXE from the Navigator, you
will see the Borland C++Builder installation begin, but
instead of the installation displaying on the desktop, it
will be viewable through the main view only. The
installation is still running, but it is just not visible
on the desktop.
4. Cannot install while uninstall running.
If you attempt to run INSTALL.EXE while a copy of the
uninstall program is running, you will receive errors.
DO NOT run the installation program while the uninstall is
running. If you're not sure if the uninstall is running,
follow the instructions in Section 0 F to determine what
is running on your machine before running INSTALL.EXE.
This error can also occur if you are using Windows NT and
are trying to install from a user account that doesn't have
access to the WinNT directory. Similar errors occur if
you try to uninstall and don't have access to the WinNT
directory.
5. Qbik WinGate Engine conflict.
The C++Builder installation will hang if you have the
"Qbik WinGate Engine" service enabled. Turn off this
service before installing the software.
WinGate product information available at:
http://webnz.com/qbik/index.html
http://www.deerfield.com/wingate/support.htm
6. InstallShield Error on Windows 98
An Install Shield Error on Windows 98 may cause the
install to crash. This error happens with specific
Client for NetWare drivers, and occurs when you click
on the "Browse" button to change the install directory.
There are three outcomes of this error:
1. An Invalid Page Fault (or other error) in MPREXE
2. The setup exits without error
3. The Choose Folder dialog appears, but the Drives
drop-down list contains only drive C:
For more information on this problem, refer to the
knowledgebase document Q102400 at:
http://www.installshield.com
7. InterBase Installation Error: String too large
When installing InterBase, an invalid error message may
occur. The error code is 401, and the message that is
shown is "String variable is not large enough for string.
Check the string declarations." Ignore the error, and
click the OK button. The installation will proceed
normally. This error occurs either when the installation
path is very long or the Windows path statement is very
long. You should check to see if InterBase has been added
into the Windows path statement by typing "path" at the
command prompt. If it is not in your path statement, you
can add it into your autoexec.bat.
8. InterBase Installation Error: Error near IBCheck
If the error "Internal error near: IBCheck" occurs,
check the PATH value for the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Environment
If this value is a hex value, change the value to "".
C. Installing from a Network or Shared Drive
---------------------------------------------
If installing from a network or shared drive, you must map
a drive letter to the drive such that the root of this
mapped drive contains INSTALL.EXE.
D. After Installing
-------------------
After installing, reboot your system so it can replace any
files that may have been locked during installation.
*********************************************************
Please review README.TXT once installation is complete.
Before distributing C++Builder applications, please review
your license agreement and DEPLOY.TXT (on the C++Builder CD
or in the CBuilder directory).
*********************************************************
E. Files Available on the CD
---------------------------------------------------------------
Most of the files installed in your target directory by the
INSTALL.EXE program are on the distribution CD in the \RUNIMAGE
directory. You must use INSTALL.EXE to install C++Builder, but
you can copy files from this directory tree on the CD if any
files are lost or damaged during or after installation.
F. Code Signing/Authenticode
---------------------------------------------------------------
To use C++Builder's code-signing features, you must have
Internet Explorer 4.0 with Authenticode. This product is
available on the CD ROM for Windows NT in the IE\NT directory
and for Windows 95 and 98 IE\WIN95AND98 directory.
G. Just-In-Time Debugging
---------------------------------------------------------------
During installation, you have the option of updating your
Just-In-Time Debugger registry settings.
If you choose to update your registry, it makes changes to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
AEDebug\Debugger key. It changes it to:
C:\Program Files\Borland\CBuilder\bin\bordbg41.exe -aeargs %ld %ld
(where C:\Program Files\Borland\ is the installation directory)
If you do not update during the installation, you will receive
a second chance to update the registry at program startup. The
Just-In-Time Debugger automatically starts up when any program
running on your computer fails. Just-In-Time debugging and
distributed debugging will not work unless this registry setting
is updated.
If you want to preserve your existing AEDebug settings in case you
want to change them back at a later date, you must follow these
steps BEFORE updating the registry settings:
1. Run regedit.
2. Select the AEDebug key.
3. Choose Registry | Export Registry File.
4. Name and save the file containing the AEDebug key.
To restore the AEDebug settings you can:
1. Run regedit.
2. Choose Registry | Import Registry File.
3. Specify the file where you saved the AEDebug key.
H. CORBA Development
---------------------------------------------------------------
To do CORBA development, you MUST install VisiBroker.
---------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 2. Changing Your System Configuration
---------------------------------------------------------------
It is recommended that you change your system configuration if
you encounter problems when installing new software.
Windows 95 and Windows NT each have their own method, as
follows.
A. Safe Mode Boot under Windows 95 and Windows 98
---------------------------------------------------------------
Under Windows 95/98, the method for booting in a simple system
configuration is through Safe Mode, a boot option provided on
the startup menu. To boot in Safe Mode, follow the instructions
below:
1. Shut down the machine and reboot.
2. Before the Windows 95 or Windows 98
splash screen appears (but after the
'BEEP'), press F8. Select Safe Mode
from the menu and press Enter.
OR
Windows 95/98 will boot in safe mode if you
hold down the <SHIFT> key after the system
'BEEP' and before the Windows95/98 splash screen.
3. You are now running in Windows 95/98 Safe Mode.
Windows 95 informs you that you are running in a
special diagnostic mode. Click OK and you
will be able to continue your work.
Note: Windows 95 and 98 do not recognize CD-ROM drives in
Safe Mode. You will need to copy the files from the
INSTALL directory on the CD onto your hard drive and
install from there (see hard drive install, section 1).
B. VGA Mode Boot under Windows NT
---------------------------------------------------------------
Windows NT 4.0 uses a different method for changing to a
simple system configuration. To boot in VGA Mode, follow the
directions below:
1. Shut down the machine and reboot.
2. When the OS choice menu appears, select number 2,
Windows NT Workstation/Server [VGA Mode].
Windows NT will then boot in a clean mode.
C. Additional Notes
---------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to following the appropriate instructions for your
operating system in this section, be sure to follow the other
instructions in Section 0 regarding programs running in the
background during installation. The Safe Mode and VGA Mode
boot processes remove extraneous drivers, but do not
necessarily keep programs from running.
---------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 3. Troubleshooting Installation Error Messages
---------------------------------------------------------------
This section describes the most common error messages that can
occur during installation. Each error message includes a
suggested solution. If you receive errors that are not
listed here, contact the Installation Line at the phone
number listed in Section 6 of this document.
-2: Unable to open input file
Check that the Source directory is specified correctly,
and that the file being copied is located in that
directory.
-3: Unable to open output file
Check that the Destination directory is specified
correctly, and that the file does not already exist in
that directory. Also make sure that you have access
rights to write to the Destination directory.
-4: Unable to write to file
Check the integrity of the source disk as well as the
destination disk. Make sure that there are no errors
on either disk.
-6: Memory allocation error
Not enough memory is currently available for the
installation to proceed. Close down other applications
to free memory.
-9: Source and target directories conflict
Make sure that the source directory listed and the target
directory listed are different.
-27: Unable to create directory
The installation program was unable to create the target
directory specified. Check that this directory does
not already exist and that you have access privileges
to that area.
-38: Not enough disk space on target drive
There is not enough hard disk space on the target drive
specified. Free more space before attempting to
reinstall.
-46: Target file is read-only
The file currently being written is marked as read-only
and cannot be overwritten. Delete or rename the
currently existing copy of this file before continuing.
-401: String too long
Your system path statement is too long. Check your path
and shorten it, if possible.
---------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 4. Registry Changes
---------------------------------------------------------------
The registry under Windows 95 or Windows NT is the file where
information concerning all software added to the system is
logged and kept for reference. You can access the registry by
using the registry editor to view and change the registry, if
necessary. (There is almost never a reason to do this manually.)
Following is a list of changes made to the registry when
Borland C++Builder is installed.
A. Key Names added
---------------------------------------------------------------
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key Name: SOFTWARE\Borland\C++Builder\4.0
Key Name: SOFTWARE\Borland\DBD
Key Name: SOFTWARE\Borland\Debugging
Key Name: SOFTWARE\Borland\Locales
Key Name: SOFTWARE\Borland\Package Collection Editor
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key Name: SOFTWARE\Borland\C++Builder\4.0
Key Name: SOFTWARE\Borland\BLW32
Key Name: SOFTWARE\Borland\Database Engine
Key Name: SOFTWARE\Borland\Borland Shared
B. File Extension Associations
---------------------------------------------------------------
These are the file extension associations kept in the registry
under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bpg = "BorlandProjectGroup"
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bpk = "BCBPackage"
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bpr = "BCBProject"
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cpp = "BCBUnit"
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dfm = "BCBForm"
---------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 5. Uninstallation
---------------------------------------------------------------
A. How to Uninstall
---------------------------------------------------------------
To uninstall C++Builder:
i. Choose Start|Settings|Control Panel
ii. Select Add/Remove Programs
iii. Select Borland C++Builder 4
B. Shared Files
---------------------------------------------------------------
C++Builder installs a number of shared files on your machine.
During the uninstallation process, the uninstaller checks to see
if shared files are being used by other applications. If not, the
system asks if you would like it to be removed. This is because the
operating system may incorrectly report some file dependencies.
Most of the time, no problem occurs as a result of removing these
shared files. Further, if you are uninstalling for the purpose of
installing a new version, these files should be removed.
If you have problems running applications that need these shared
files after uninstalling C++Builder, you can copy them from
the C++Builder CD-ROM into your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
C. Files Not Removed by the Uninstall
---------------------------------------------------------------
The uninstallation program removes only the files placed on the
system by the install. When you run C++Builder, a number of files
are created dynamically and will remain on the system after the
uninstallation. These files should be deleted.
Check the remaining C++Builder directory carefully for files that
you have created and want to save (Usually residing in the
'Projects' sub-directory), then delete the CBuilder directory and
all files therein.
