  11. This is just a small sample of the game.  The full version
  12. includes 20 levels of intense action.

  14. These release notes are intended to provide last minute
  15. information regarding Small Soldiers: Squad Commander. 
  16. Small Soldiers: Squad Commander uses the latest in game
  17. design technology.  We don't expect you'll encounter any
  18. problems, however, if you are having trouble getting
  19. Small Soldiers: Squad Commander to run on your system,
  20. please read the troubleshooting section below.

  71. 2. RUNNING SMALL SOLDIERS: SQUAD COMMANDER DEMO

  73. Download the Small Soldiers: Squad Commander demo to your hard drive.
  74.  
  75. Unzip the demo to a folder of your choosing.  The demo will create a 
  76. smallsoldiers folder.  Inside the smallsoldiers folder will be another
  77. folder named netdemo.  The netdemo folder contains the ssoldier.exe and
  78. the data for the game.

  80. To run the demo just double click the ssoldier.exe in the netdemo folder.

  84. 2.1 QUICK INSTRUCTIONS:
  85.  
  86. Click and drag the mouse to select your Small Soldiers, then click 
  87. where you'd like them to go.
  88.  
  89. Click on Enemies you wish to attack, or Items you wish to pick up.
  90.  
  91. To use a Throwable Explosive you've picked up, click on its picture 
  92. in the right-hand panel.  Then click on the battlefield or enemy where 
  93. you'd like it thrown.
  94.  
  95. To use a Key or other Object you've picked up, click on its picture 
  96. in the right-hand panel.  Click on the battlefield where you'd like 
  97. to use it.  NOTE: The cursor will change to "use here" or "put here".
  98.  
  99. If you lose one of your Small Soldiers, return to your Toy box and 
  100. double-click it to choose another Small Soldier to add to your team.
  101.  
  102. Batteries supply extra health to your Squad Members.   Your soldiers' 
  103. health bars are displayed underneath them. 
  104.  
  105. Mousetraps and Barrels can be blown up to clear the way!
  106.  
  107. The Glowing Orbs upgrade your Weapon's strength.

  109. Pull all switches and levers - you never know what they'll activate.

  113. 3. PERFORMANCE TIPS
  114.  
  115.  
  116. * Close other programs that are running before playing Small 
  117. Soldiers: Squad Commander. Doing this may free up available 
  118. memory and improve performance.
  119.  
  120. * Some sound-producing programs, like a screen saver or any
  121. program that makes a sound in the background, may take over
  122. the sound capability of your computer and interrupt Small 
  123. Soldiers: Squad Commander sounds. If you suspect you have such
  124. a program, do not run it or any other sound-producing programs 
  125. at the same time as Small Soldiers: Squad Commander.
  126.  
  127. *Some Desktop toolbars may not be observing Windows logo
  128. requirements and could draw over Small Soldiers: Squad 
  129. Commander.  If this happens, please disable the tool bar. 
  130.  
  131. * Check your monitor and video card settings.
  132. The best settings are 640 x 480 and 256 colors. (See the section 
  133. below on VIDEO TROUBLESHOOTING for instructions on how 
  134. to change the settings.)
  135.  
  136. * Small Soldiers: Squad Commander requires a certain amount of
  137. free hard disk space in order to function properly. The amount 
  138. required depends on the amount of memory (or RAM) your 
  139. computer has, and the memory settings for the computer. In 
  140. general, the more RAM you have, the less free hard disk space you 
  141. need.  If you are using Windows with the default settings which 
  142. allow Windows to manage the Virtual Memory, Small Soldiers:
  143. Squad Commander runs best with at least 30 megabytes (MB) of 
  144. free hard disk space when using the minimum installation option. 
  145. If you have more space, you can choose to install the typical or 
  146. maximum install options (the next section explains in detail 
  147. installation of Small Soldiers: Squad Commander).

  149. 4. VIDEO TROUBLESHOOTING
  150.  
  151. "A message appears telling me to run in 256 color mode or 
  152. higher."
  153.  
  154. - Your computer must display at least 256 colors to run Small 
  155. Soldiers: Squad Commander. To display 256 colors:
  156.      1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click 
  157.          Control Panel.
  158.      2. Double-click the Display icon.
  159.      3. Click the Settings tab.
  160.      4. Under Color Palette, click 256 Color.
  161.      5. Click OK.
  162.  
  163. If you don't have the necessary 256-color driver, or if you're 
  164. not sure that your video card supports 256 colors, contact your 
  165. video card manufacturer.
  166.  
  167. - Make sure you have the correct Monitor Type selected for 
  168. your computer. To do this use the following steps:
  169.      1. Click the Start button, point to Settings and click Control 
  170.          Panel.
  171.      2. In Control Panel, double-click the Display icon.
  172.      3. Click the Settings tab and click Change Display Type.
  173.      4. Under Monitor Type, verify that the correct Monitor Type 
  174.          is selected. If the incorrect monitor is selected or if the 
  175.          Monitor Type is set to Unknown, click Change to select the
  176.          correct monitor.

  179. "When I started the game, I received a message that said my video
  180. drivers do not support DirectX"
  181.  
  182. -This may or may not affect game play.  If game play is affected, 
  183. try re-installing DirectX
  184.  
  185. -If re-installing DirectX does not certify your video drivers and
  186. the other troubleshooting tips do not work, please contact your 
  187. video manufacturer for the latest DirectX video drivers. 
  188.  
  189.  
  190. - If your computer has a graphics acceleration card, then try 
  191. disabling Direct3D Hardware Acceleration. To disable Direct3D 
  192. Hardware Acceleration:
  193.      1. Run the file \Setup\Directx\Dxsetup.exe from the CD-ROM.
  194.      2. Clear the Direct 3D Hardware Acceleration check box. 
  195.  
  196. - If the problem still occurs, change Graphics Acceleration to 
  197. Basic.
  198.      1. In the Windows 95 Control Panel, double-click System.
  199.      2. On the Performance tab, click Graphics.
  200.      3. Change the Acceleration slider to one notch above None.
  201.      4. Click OK, then click Close.
  202.  
  203. - Your computer must have a PCI video card with 1 MB 
  204. VRAM to display video scenes properly. If your computer has an 
  205. ISA video card or a video card with less than 1 MB of VRAM, 
  206. it is recommended that you upgrade to a PCI video card with at 
  207. least 1 MB of VRAM. To find out how much VRAM you have:
  208.      1. Double-click My Computer.
  209.      2. Right mouse click on the Small Soldiers: Squad Commander 
  210.          icon.
  211.      3. Click Open. Double-click the setup folder.
  212.      4. Double-click setchaos.exe.
  213.      5. Read under Installation Information the amount of Video 
  214. Memory. If this number is less than 1000000 or Video Memory 
  215. is emulated, then you do not have 1 MB of VRAM.
  216.  
  217.  
  218. "The desktop area and resolution are different after I quit the game."
  219.  
  220. It is recommended that you have your display area size set to 
  221. 640x480 and 256 colors before playing Small Soldiers: Squad 
  222. Commander.
  223.  
  224. To do this use the following steps:
  225.      1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click 
  226.          Control Panel.
  227.      2. Double-click the Display icon.
  228.      3. Click the Settings tab.
  229.      4. Under Desktop area, move the slider to the left so that 
  230.          640x480 pixels is displayed.
  231.      5. Under Color palette select 256 color.
  232.      6. Click OK.
  233.      7. You may have to reboot your computer before changes take 
  234.          effect. Be sure to close all any open applications before 
  235.          doing so.

  238. "The display utility program doesn't work anymore."
  239.  
  240. If your video card was installed with extra utility software 
  241. programs, these may be disabled after installing DirectX.
  242. You may want to re-install the video card utility programs.
  243.  
  244.  
  245. "I got a SetDisplayMode Error: DDERR_GENERIC message"
  246.  
  247. If you receive this error you probably have a video card that 
  248. doesn't fully support on the fly mode switching.  To fix, set
  249. your resolution to 256 color and restart.

  253. 4.1. Specific Video Card Troubleshooting
  254.  
  255. * If your computer has an ISA video card, you may experience 
  256. crashes or freezes while playing the game.  ISA video cards are 
  257. not supported by this product.  It is recommended that you 
  258. upgrade to a PCI video card with at least 1 MB of VRAM.
  259.  
  260. * If your computer has a Compaq Qvision PCI 1 MB VRAM 
  261. video card, your desktop area and resolution may change after
  262. exiting the program. It is recommended that you change your
  263. display resolution to 640x480 and 256 colors before running 
  264. Small Soldiers: Squad Commander. 
  265.  
  266. *UniVBE: If you are using UniVBE 5.1, you will need to 
  267. disable it before playing Small Soldiers: Squad Commander 
  268. or the game could possibly not function properly.  Be 
  269. sure to re-enable UniVBE 5.1 when finished playing.
  270.  
  271. To disable UniVBE 5.1 before playing Small Soldiers 
  272.    Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  273.    In the Open box, type sysedit
  274.    Click OK. A number of windows will appear. 
  275.    Click the title bar of the window labeled Autoexec.bat.
  276.    At the beginning of the line that lists UniVBE 5.1, type
  277.    REM followed by a space.   For example, REM UniVBE 5.1.
  278.    On the File menu, click Save. 
  279.    On the File menu, click Exit.
  280.    Restart your computer to apply this change, and then
  281.    start Small Soldiers: Squad Commander.
  282.  
  283. To re-enable UniVBE 5.1 after playing Small Soldiers
  284.    Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  285.    In the Open box, type sysedit
  286.    Click OK. A number of windows will appear. 
  287.    Click the title bar of the window labeled Autoexec.bat.
  288.    At the beginning of the line that lists UniVBE 5.1,
  289.    delete REM.
  290.    On the File menu, click Save. 
  291.    On the File menu, click Exit.
  292.    Restart your computer to apply this change.

  294. 5. AUDIO TROUBLESHOOTING
  295.  
  296. Most sound cards can play only one sound at a time. Some 
  297. sound-producing programs, like a screen saver or any program 
  298. that makes a sound in the background, may take over the sound 
  299. capability of your computer and interrupt Small Soldiers: Squad 
  300. Commander sounds. If you suspect you have such a program, do 
  301. not run it or any other sound-producing programs at the same 
  302. time as Small Soldiers: Squad Commander.
  303.  
  304.  
  305. "I don't hear any sound."
  306.  
  307. - Make sure your speakers are plugged into a power source, 
  308. if applicable, and that the power is turned on.
  309.  
  310. - Try adjusting the sound card volume with a program that is 
  311. often called a "mixer." To access the sound mixer:
  312.      1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to 
  313.          Accessories, point to Multimedia and click Volume 
  314.         Control.
  315.      2. Turn up the volume using the volume slider bars under
  316.          Volume Control and Wave Balance. Make sure that the 
  317.          Mute box is unchecked, then close the Volume Control 
  318.          window.
  319.  
  320. - Make sure your speakers are plugged into the correct 
  321. connection on your sound card.
  322.  
  323. - Make sure the sound card is pressed securely into its slot.
  324.  
  325. - Make sure the sound card switches and settings were set 
  326. correctly when the sound card was installed. Refer to your 
  327. sound card manual for more information on your sound card 
  328. settings.
  329.  
  330. - Make sure the sound card doesn't conflict with other hardware 
  331. by using the Hardware Conflict Troubleshooter. The Hardware 
  332. Conflict Troubleshooter was designed specifically to help with 
  333. hardware conflicts in Windows. To use the Troubleshooter:
  334.      1. In Windows, click the Start button, and then click Help.
  335.      2. Double-click Troubleshooting.
  336.      3. Double-click If you have a hardware conflict and follow 
  337.           the on screen instructions.
  338.  
  339.  
  340. "The sound is distorted, skips, or cuts off."
  341.  
  342. - If the sound is distorted, try adjusting the sound card volume 
  343. with a program that is often called a "mixer." See instructions
  344. above on how to do this.
  345.  
  346. - If you have a Media Vision Pro Audio 16 sound card and the 
  347. sound is scratchy, the Direct Memory Access (DMA) may be 
  348. set incorrectly. For instructions on changing your DMA 
  349. settings, refer to your sound card manual.
  350.  
  351.  
  352. "When I started the game, the game said my sound drivers do not 
  353. support DirectX"
  354.  
  355. This may or may not affect game play.  If game play is affected, 
  356. try re-installing DirectX
  357.  
  358. -To re-install DirectX:
  359.      1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
  360.      2. Right mouse click on the Small Soldiers: Squad Commander 
  361.          icon, then click Open.
  362.      3. Double-click the setup folder, then double-click the 
  363.          DirectX folder.
  364.      4. Double-click DXSETUP then click reinstall DirectX.
  365.      5. After installation, you will be prompted to restart your 
  366.          machine.  Click OK.
  367.  
  368. -If re-installing DirectX does not certify your sound drivers, 
  369. please contact your sound manufacturer for the latest DirectX 
  370. sound drivers.

  373. 6. OTHER HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
  374.

  376. * If you're using IntelliPoint software with your Microsoft mouse.
  377. The Snap To feature can cause the mouse pointer to jump around 
  378. on the screen when you do certain things in Small Soldiers: Squad 
  379. Commander. To fix the pointer problem, turn off the Snap To 
  380. feature. To turn off the Snap To feature:
  381.      1. In Windows, click the Start button, and then point to Settings.
  382.      2. Click Control Panel, and then double-click the Mouse icon.
  383.          In the lower-right corner of the Mouse Properties box, you'll
  384.          see Microsoft IntelliPoint mentioned.
  385.      3. Click the Activity tab, and then click Snap To. Make sure 
  386.          there is no 'x' in the box.
  387.      4. Click OK.
