  14. DOGZ II RETAIL CD-ROM
  15. On your Dogz II CD, click on the "Install Dogz II" 
  16. button, or at the root level of the CD in the 
  17. Dogz II directory, double-click the file called 
  18. "Setup.exe" to launch the installer.
  19.  
  20. CATZ II ADOPTION KIT (Included on Dogz II Retail CD-ROM)
  21. On your Dogz II CD, click on the "Catz II Demo" 
  22. button, or at the root level of the CD in the 
  23. Catz II Demo directory, double-click the file 
  24. called "Setup.exe" to launch the installer.
  25.  
  26. DOGZ II ADOPTION KIT (3 floppy disk set)
  27. Insert Disk 1 of the Dogz II Adoption Kit.  
  28. Double-click the file called "Setup.exe" to
  29. launch the installer.  Follow the instructions 
  30. to complete your Dogz II Adoption Kit installation. 
  31. Note - some of the features described below are 
  32. only in the full retail version of Dogz II.  
  33.  
  34. Remember, each Petz II Adoption Kit comes with 
  35. 5 Petz breedz and a limited number of toyz.  You 
  36. can only have one Petz out at a time in the Adoption 
  37. Kits.  When you purchase the full version of Dogz II 
  38. or Catz II, you'll be able to enjoy all the cool new 
  39. features such as having two Petz out at once, (yes, 
  40. Dogz and Catz can play together now), a whole 
  41. collection of fun new toyz, and the ability to download 
  42. new breedz and toyz from our Web site at:  www.petz.com
  43.  
  44. Please note:  When you install a Petz II product, 
  45. Microsoft DirectX is also installed, but will not 
  46. overwrite drivers you already have.  Once Installation 
  47. is complete, restart your computer, then go to the 
  48. folder called PF.Magic on your hard drive, and double-
  49. click the file called "Petz II.exe" to launch and 
  50. begin playing with your new Petz.
  51.  
  52. 2.  Product Overview
  53. Dogz II and Catz II are the newest releases in 
  54. PF.Magic's best-selling line of Virtual Petz.  These 
  55. products continue PF.Magic's mission to deliver the 
  56. best virtual Petz experience in the world. In 
  57. Dogz II and Catz II no two Petz are alike - every pet 
  58. looks unique and has a unique personality.  Your 
  59. virtual Petz are now even more intelligent and can 
  60. play and interact with each other!  Also, more breedz 
  61. of Petz and more toyz are available on the Web for 
  62. users to download. 
  63.  
  64. Dogz II and Catz II are sold separately.  When both 
  65. products are installed, Dogz and Catz can play with 
  66. each other and with each other's toyz.
  67.  
  68. There are 3 separate areas in Dogz II:
  69.      Playpen - This is the primary area.  Play 
  70. with adopted Petz and toyz here.  (You can also let 
  71. your Petz out of the Playpen into the Fullscreen 
  72. Mode - here you can play with your Petz right on your 
  73. desktop as you work in other applications or windows.)
  74.      Adoption Center - Check out all the 
  75. different breedz and adopt your Petz here.  Also, 
  76. connect directly to the Online Adoption Center to 
  77. see what new breedz are available to download.
  78.      Toybox - Get new toyz and rearrange your Supply 
  79. Shelf here.  Also, connect directly to the Online 
  80. Toy Shop to download new toyz.
  81.     
  82. Owner's responsibility:  All Dogz that you adopt 
  83. require daily attention.  Although you can adopt
  84. as many Dogz as you like, you need to care for them 
  85. properly.  If you neglect your Petz, they will 
  86. run away.  Proper care for your Petz means playing 
  87. with them, feeding them food and water, and giving 
  88. them attention everyday that you launch Dogz II.
  89.  
  90. 3.  Key Features in Dogz II:
  91.     The most lifelike and warmest Virtual Petz.
  92.     Multiple Character Interaction:
  93.         2 Petz can be out at once and 
  94.         play together  (Dogz-Dogz, and if
  95.         you also own Catz II, Catz-Catz and   
  96.         Dogz-Catz).  Interactions include:

  98.         fight, square off or be friendly.

  131. 4.  Tips & Fun Stuff
  132.     PETTING:  
  133.         Stroke your Petz with the cursor while 
  134.         holding down the left mouse button to pet 
  135.         them.
  136.     PICK THEM UP: 
  137.         Click and hold down the right mouse button 
  138.         while over a Petz to pick it up and carry it.  
  139.         Let go of the mouse button to drop your Petz.
  140.     TRAIN YOUR PETZ:
  141.         Gesture (wiggle a treat) in a direction to 
  142.         see Petz do a trick in that direction. This 
  143.         advanced degree of training is awesome.  
  144.         Wiggle a treat over a toy to make Petz do a 
  145.         trick with that toy - e.g. fetch it, balance 
  146.         it on nose, jump on it.
  147.     FEED YOUR PETZ:
  148.         Dogz need to be fed food and water daily.
  149.     PLAY WITH THEM:
  150.         There is endless fun to be had with all the 
  151.         toyz provided.
  152.     TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEM:
  153.         If you neglect or abuse your Petz, they will 
  154.         run away.  Proper care for your Petz means 
  155.         playing with them, feeding them food and water,
  156.         and giving them attention every day that you 
  157.         launch Dogz II.
  158.     GAMES:
  159.         Watch two dogz play "catch" with the ball.  
  160.         See if you can get two Petz to play games with
  161.         each other.  Throw the flying disc and watch
  162.         your dogz catch it.  Adults are faster and can
  163.         catch up more easily.   
  164.  
  165. 5.  Troubleshooting:
  166. ** I AM GETTING A FILE NOT FOUND ERROR
  167. - Make sure you have virtual memory turned on.  To do 
  168. this, open System in your Control Panels and select the 
  169. Performance tag.  Then, click on the Virtual Memory 
  170. button at the bottom and choose "Let Windows manage my 
  171. virtual memory settings."  
  172. - Also, you need to make sure that the hard disk where 
  173. your virtual memory swap disk is has at least 50 MB free.  
  174. This is generally your C:/ drive.
  175.  
  176. ** I GET AN ERROR INSTALLING PETZ II
  177. - As with all setup programs, you should exit any open 
  178. applications before running setup, including any other 
  179. Petz programs.  Make sure you exit out of ALL open 
  180. applications before installing Petz II.
  181.  
  182. ** I HAVE A PROBLEM RUNNING SCANDISK AND PETZ II
  183. AT THE SAME TIME
  184. Due to the complexity of Petz II, and the large amount 
  185. of unique animation and sound, Petz II will often prevent 
  186. ScanDisk from running to completion.  This is due to 
  187. signifigant amounts of swap activity in Windows virtual
  188. memory.  If you experience trouble, we recommend you 
  189. close Petz II before running ScanDisk.
  190.  
  191. If you run ScanDisk automatically, we suggest using the 
  192. Slideshow Screen Saver.  Slideshow uses minimal system 
  193. resources, and will allow ScanDisk to complete.
  194.  
  195. ** MY MODEM REGISTRATION FAILS
  196. - This is most likely due to an error in your modem setup.  
  197. Try re-hooking up your modem.  You may also have trouble 
  198. registering through LAN modem networks.  An easy solution 
  199. to both of these problems is to print out your Petz II 
  200. Registration card and Mail or Fax it to the address or 
  201. number provided on the printout.  
  202.  
  203. ** I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0 
  204. WHEN MY PETZ ARE IN FULLSCREEN
  205. - There are incompatibilities between Internet Explorer 
  206. 4.0 and Petz II Active Background mode.  To fix this, 
  207. disable Active Background mode by unchecking "Active 
  208. Background Mode On" in the General Options menu under 
  209. your Options Menu item.  You will still be able to go 
  210. to Fullscreen mode, but you will not be able to access 
  211. files underneath your Petz II program.
  212.  
  213. ** ACTIVE BACKGROUND IS NOT WORKING, AND I AM NOT
  214. USING INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0
  215. - If you are experiencing problems in Active Background
  216. Mode, such as not being able to pick up your Petz, you 
  217. may be able to fix this by adding a line to your 
  218. "Autoexec.bat" file.  To do this, go to the root level
  219. of your C:\ drive and find "Autoexec.bat".  Right-click 
  220. on "Autoexec.bat" and select "Edit" from the pull-down 
  221. menu; this will open the file as an editable text file.
  222. Add the following line to the bottom of the file: 
  223.  
  224. Path="The Path to your PetzII.exe file";%PATH%  
  225.  
  226. For example, if you have installed Petz II to its 
  227. default directory, the line would read:  
  228.  
  229. Path="C:\Program Files\PF.Magic\Petz II";%PATH%  
  230.  
  231. Close "Autoexec.bat" and click "Yes" when prompted to 
  232. save these changes.  You will need to restart your 
  233. computer for these changes to take effect.
  234.  
  235. ** I GET WINDOWS POP-UP MENUS WHEN I TRY TO 
  236. CLICK ON THE SUPPLY SHELF
  237. -In Petz II Active Background mode, Diamond InControl 
  238. Tools' left-click or right-click popup menu may appear 
  239. when clicking on the Supply Shelf.  To stop this from 
  240. happening, go to Popup Menus under Display Properties 
  241. and uncheck "Start Menu" under Left Mouse Button Popup 
  242. Menu and/or "Enable Customized Popup Menu" under Right 
  243. Mouse Button Popup Menu. 
  244. -You can also choose to disable Petz II Active Background 
  245. mode if you want to keep your customized InControl Tools' 
  246. mouse options active. To do this, uncheck the "Active 
  247. Background Mode On" option in your Petz II General 
  248. Options menu.  Remember, if you disable the Active 
  249. Background mode, you will no longer be able to work in 
  250. your open windows while Petz II is running.  
  251.  
  252. ** I'VE LOST MY PETZ II SCREEN SAVER PASSWORD
  253. -If you forget your Petz II Screen Saver password while 
  254. in the Screen Saver, you will need to restart your 
  255. computer and enter a new password in your Display 
  256. Properties/Screen Saver dialog. You can do this by 
  257. launching Petz II, choosing "Screen Saver Options" from 
  258. the Options menu and clicking on the Change button next 
  259. to the "Password protected" option box.  Type in and 
  260. confirm your new password and then click "Ok" to save 
  261. your new password.
  262.  
  263. ** MY SCREEN SAVER IS SET TO PETZ II EVEN THOUGH 
  264. I DIDN'T CHOOSE IT IN THE DISPLAY PROPERTIES
  265. -Selecting "Screen Saver Options" from the Petz II 
  266. Options menu automatically switches any previously-
  267. enabled non-Petz screen saver to the Petz II screen 
  268. saver.  You will need to go back into your Screen 
  269. Saver properties to choose a different screen saver.
  270.  
  271. ** I'M EXPERIENCING STRANGE BEHAVIOR WITH MY 
  272. PETZ OR THEIR TOYZ 
  273. -Do not worry - your Petz probably just need a rest.  
  274. Simply close the application re-launch it.  That is 
  275. likely to cure many of the problems you may have.
  276. -You can first try resetting your PF.Magic registry by 
  277. holding down the Control key, Shift key and Home key at 
  278. the same time that you launch Petz.  You will get a 
  279. dialog asking if you want to reset the registry.  Click 
  280. OK and your program will launch.                                      
  281. -If Petz II continues to act up, you may want to try 
  282. reinstalling your Petz II program.  To do this, first 
  283. uninstall Petz II by opening the Add/Remove Programs 
  284. Properties in your Control Panel at the root level of 
  285. My Computer or under Settings in the Start Menu.  In 
  286. the Install/Uninstall menu, select Petz II from the 
  287. list and click on the "Add/Remove..." button.  Choose 
  288. "Yes" in the "Confirm File Deletion" dialog.  NOTE:  
  289. Uninstalling Petz II will NOT delete your Adopted 
  290. Petz.  They will be waiting for you in their Playpen 
  291. after you reinstall.  Reinstall Petz II by launching 
  292. "Setup.exe" from your Petz II CD-ROM.
  293.  
  294. ** NO SOUNDS ARE HEARD, OR THE SOUND IS NOT 
  295. PLAYING PROPERLY
  296. -Make sure the "Play Sound Effects" option is checked 
  297. in the "General Options" menu and that you don't have 
  298. "Play Sound Effects Only if Front Window" selected.  
  299. If you're not hearing sounds in the Screen Saver, you 
  300. may not have the "Petz II Sound Effects" option selected 
  301. in your "Screen Saver Options" menu. 
  302. -Petz will not make sounds when the Playpen is minimized 
  303. (this is a quick way to quiet your Petz down!).  Make 
  304. sure the Playpen is open on the screen or that you are 
  305. in Fullscreen mode.
  306. -You may have a problem with your DirectX sound drivers.  
  307. Try reinstalling Petz II.  If this does not work, we 
  308. suggest you try getting the most recent DirectX sound 
  309. drivers directly from Microsoft by downloading it off 
  310. their web site at:  www.microsoft.com/directx/default.asp  
  311.  
  312. ** MY OTHER APPLICATIONS GET NO SOUND WHEN PETZ II
  313. IS RUNNING; EVEN WHEN PETZ II SOUND IS TURNED OFF
  314. -Sorry, Petz II needs to initialize the sound channel when 
  315. launched, whether or not you have sounds on.  This means 
  316. that Petz II needs to have constant access to the sound 
  317. channel, therefore not allowing other applications to 
  318. play sound.  You will still be able to play CD's in your 
  319. CD-Rom drive, though.  Quit Petz II in order to hear
  320. sounds in other applications.
  321.  
  322. ** I GET A CRASH TRYING TO RUN PETZ II WITH 
  323. ANOTHER APPLICATION
  324. - Many older programs cannot run with newer programs 
  325. that use Microsoft's DirectX.  Since Petz II uses 
  326. DirectX's sound drivers, you may not be able to run 
  327. Petz II at the same time as some of these older programs.
  328.  
  329. ** THE GENERAL OPTIONS PULL-DOWN MENU TAKES 
  330. A LONG TIME TO APPEAR
  331. -If you had a network connection but no longer do, and 
  332. have a link to the network in your Startup folder, you 
  333. will experience long pauses in the Petz II program when 
  334. you open the General Options Menu.  To fix this, either 
  335. reconnect to the network, or delete your network link 
  336. in "Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup." 
  337.  
  338. ** I CANNOT "IMPORT" PETZ FROM A FOLDER THAT 
  339. MY FRIEND COPIED FOR ME
  340. -The import feature is only for importing Petz from 
  341. Dogz I or Catz I.  It is not for bringing in Petz from
  342. Petz II that friends copied for you or that you 
  343. downloaded off of the internet.  In these cases, you 
  344. need to copy your new Petz file into your "Adopted Petz" 
  345. folder.
  346.  
  347. ** I CAN'T STOP PLAYING WITH PETZ II
  348. -That's OK.  Just be sure to play with all of the Petz
  349. you have adopted equally, so that none feel left out.
  350.  
  351. ** MY NON-VIRTUAL DOGS AND/OR CATS ARE GETTING JEALOUS 
  352. WHEN I PLAY WITH PETZ II
  353. -Don't forget to give your other pets love and affection,
  354. food and water, and all the care that they need.  We know
  355. that your other pets may also want to join in the fun
  356. with Petz II, but we haven't gotten there yet.  
  357.
