  13. DOGZ II AND CATZ II RETAIL CD-ROMS
  14. Installation procedure is the same for both 
  15. Dogz II and Catz II.
  16. When you insert your CD, click the button that says
  17. "Install Dogz II" or "Install Catz II".  Or, at the 
  18. root level of your CD, go into the Dogz II or Catz II
  19. directory and double-click the file called "Setup.exe" 
  20. to launch the installer.
  21.  
  22. DOGZ II AND CATZ II ADOPTION KITS (Dogz II Adoption 
  23. Kit included on the Catz II CD-ROM, Catz II Adoption 
  24. Kit included on Dogz II Retail CD-ROM.)
  25. On the appropriate CD, click on the "Dogz II Demo" 
  26. or "Catz II Demo" button, or at the root level of 
  27. the CD in the Dogz II Demo or Catz II Demo directory, 
  28. double-click the file called "Setup.exe" to launch 
  29. the installer.
  30.  
  31. DOGZ II AND CATZ II ADOPTION KITS (3 floppy disk sets)
  32. Insert Disk 1 of the Dogz II or Catz II Adoption Kit.  
  33. Double-click the file called "Setup.exe" to
  34. launch the installer.  Follow the instructions 
  35. to complete your Dogz II or Catz II Adoption Kit 
  36. installation. 
  37. Note - some of the features described below are 
  38. only in the full retail version of Dogz II and
  39. Catz II.  
  40.  
  41. Remember, each Petz II Adoption Kit comes with 
  42. 5 Petz breedz and a limited number of toyz.  You 
  43. can only have one Petz out at a time in the Adoption 
  44. Kits.  When you purchase the full version of Dogz II 
  45. or Catz II, you'll be able to enjoy all the cool new 
  46. features such as having two Petz out at once, (yes, 
  47. Dogz and Catz can play together now), a whole 
  48. collection of fun new toyz, and the ability to download 
  49. new breedz and toyz from our Web site at:  www.petz.com
  50.  
  51. Please note:  When you install a Petz II product, 
  52. Microsoft DirectX is also installed, but will not 
  53. overwrite drivers you already have.  Once Installation 
  54. is complete, restart your computer, then go to the 
  55. folder called PF.Magic on your hard drive, and double-
  56. click the file called "Petz II.exe" to launch and 
  57. begin playing with your new Petz.
  58.  
  59. 2.  Product Overview
  60. Dogz II and Catz II are the newest releases in 
  61. PF. Magic's best-selling line of Virtual Petz.  
  62. These products continue PF. Magic's mission to deliver 
  63. the best Virtual Petz experience in the world. In 
  64. Dogz II and Catz II no two Petz are alike - every pet 
  65. looks unique and has a unique personality. Your 
  66. Virtual Petz are now even more intelligent and can 
  67. play and interact with each other! Also more breedz 
  68. of Petz and more toyz will be available on the Web 
  69. for users to download. 
  70.  
  71. Dogz II and Catz II install together, but are
  72. sold separately.  When both products are installed, 
  73. Dogz and Catz can play with each other and with 
  74. each other's toyz.
  75.  
  76. There are 3 separate areas in Dogz II and Catz II:
  77.     Playpen - This is the primary area.  Play 
  78. with adopted Petz and toyz here.  (You can also let 
  79. your Petz out of the playpen into the Fullscreen 
  80. Mode - here you can play with your Petz right on your 
  81. desktop as you work in other applications or windows.)
  82.     Adoption Center - Check out all the 
  83. different breedz and adopt your Petz here.  Also, 
  84. connect directly to the Online Adoption Center to 
  85. see what new breedz are available to download.
  86.     Toybox - Get new toyz and rearrange your Supply 
  87. Shelf here.  Also, connect directly to the Online
  88. Toy Shop to download new toyz.

  90. Owner's responsibility:  Any Dogz or Catz that you 
  91. adopt require daily attention.  Although you can 
  92. adopt as many Petz as you like, you need to care for 
  93. them properly.  If you neglect or abuse your Petz, 
  94. they will run away.  Proper care for your Petz means 
  95. playing with them, feeding them food and water, and 
  96. giving them attention everyday that you launch Petz II.
  97.     
  98. 3.  Key Features in Dogz II and Catz II:
  99.     The most lifelike and warmest Virtual Petz.
  100.     Multiple Character Interaction:
  101.         2 Petz can be out at once and 
  102.         play together  (Catz-Catz, Dogz-Dogz 
  103.         and Dogz-Catz).  Interactions include:

  135.         computer to play.  (Your friend will need 
  136.         to own Catz II to play with your copied

  139. 4.  Tips & Fun Stuff
  140.     PETTING:  
  141.         Stroke your Petz with the cursor while 
  142.         holding down the left mouse button to pet 
  143.         them.
  144.     PICK THEM UP: 
  145.         Click and hold down the right mouse button 
  146.         while over a Petz to pick it up and carry it.  
  147.         Let go of the mouse button to drop your Petz.
  148.     TRAIN YOUR PETZ:
  149.         Gesture (wiggle a treat) in a direction to 
  150.         see Petz do a trick in that direction. This 
  151.         advanced degree of training is awesome.  
  152.         Wiggle a treat over a toy to make Petz do a 
  153.         trick with that toy - e.g. fetch it, balance 
  154.         it on nose, jump on it.  Reward your Petz with 
  155.         a yummy Fish or Beef Treat for behavior you 
  156.         like, or use the Spray Bottle to teach your 
  157.         Petz what not to do.  
  158.     FEED YOUR PETZ:
  159.         Dogz and Catz need to be fed food and water 
  160.         daily.
  161.     PLAY WITH THEM:
  162.         There is endless fun to be had with all the 
  163.         toyz provided.
  164.     TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEM:
  165.         If you neglect or abuse your Petz, they will 
  166.         run away.  Proper care for your Petz means 
  167.         playing with them, feeding them food and water,
  168.         and giving them attention every day that you 
  169.         launch Petz II.
  170.     MICE:
  171.         Catz II comes with 2 Mice.  Take the Cheese off 
  172.         the shelf to lure the Mice out of their mouse 
  173.         hole.  To get a mouse to go away, pick it up 
  174.         (right mouse-button click on it) and shake it,
  175.         then let go.  It will shriek and go home.
  176.     GAMES:
  177.         Watch two Dogz play "catch" with the ball.  See 
  178.         if you can get two Petz to play games with each 
  179.         other.  Throw the flying disc and watch your 
  180.         Dogz catch it.  Adults are faster and can catch 
  181.         up more easily.   
  182.         Watch two Catz wrestle with the Yarn Ball.  See
  183.         if you can get two Catz to play games with each
  184.         other.  Take out the Cat Dancer and watch your 
  185.         Petz go wild!   
  186.  
  187. 5.  Troubleshooting:
  188. ** I AM GETTING A FILE NOT FOUND ERROR
  189. - Make sure you have virtual memory turned on.  To do 
  190. this, open System in your Control Panels and select the 
  191. Performance tag.  Then, click on the Virtual Memory 
  192. button at the bottom and choose "Let Windows manage my 
  193. virtual memory settings."  
  194. - Also, you need to make sure that the hard disk where 
  195. your virtual memory swap disk is has at least 50 MB free.  
  196. This is generally your C:/ drive.
  197.  
  198. ** I GET AN ERROR INSTALLING PETZ II
  199. - As with all setup programs, you should exit any open 
  200. applications before running setup, including any other 
  201. Petz programs.  Make sure you exit out of ALL open 
  202. applications before installing Petz II.
  203.  
  204. ** I HAVE A PROBLEM RUNNING SCANDISK AND PETZ II
  205. AT THE SAME TIME
  206. Due to the complexity of Petz II, and the large amount 
  207. of unique animation and sound, Petz II will often prevent 
  208. ScanDisk from running to completion.  This is due to 
  209. signifigant amounts of swap activity in Windows virtual
  210. memory.  If you experience trouble, we recommend you 
  211. close Petz II before running ScanDisk.
  212.  
  213. If you run ScanDisk automatically, we suggest using the 
  214. Slideshow Screen Saver.  Slideshow uses minimal system 
  215. resources, and will allow ScanDisk to complete.
  216.  
  217. ** MY MODEM REGISTRATION FAILS
  218. - This is most likely due to an error in your modem setup.  
  219. Try re-hooking up your modem.  You may also have trouble 
  220. registering through LAN modem networks.  An easy solution 
  221. to both of these problems is to print out your Petz II 
  222. Registration card and Mail or Fax it to the address or 
  223. number provided on the printout.  
  224.  
  225. ** I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0 
  226. WHEN MY PETZ ARE IN FULLSCREEN
  227. - There are incompatibilities between Internet Explorer 
  228. 4.0 and Petz II Active Background mode.  To fix this, 
  229. disable Active Background mode by unchecking "Active 
  230. Background Mode On" in the General Options menu under 
  231. your Options Menu item.  You will still be able to go 
  232. to Fullscreen mode, but you will not be able to access 
  233. files underneath your Petz II program.
  234.  
  235. ** ACTIVE BACKGROUND IS NOT WORKING, AND I AM NOT
  236. USING INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0
  237. - If you are experiencing problems in Active Background
  238. Mode, such as not being able to pick up your Petz, you 
  239. may be able to fix this by adding a line to your 
  240. "Autoexec.bat" file.  To do this, go to the root level
  241. of your C:\ drive and find "Autoexec.bat".  Right-click 
  242. on "Autoexec.bat" and select "Edit" from the pull-down 
  243. menu; this will open the file as an editable text file.
  244. Add the following line to the bottom of the file: 
  245.  
  246. Path="The Path to your PetzII.exe file";%PATH%  
  247.  
  248. For example, if you have installed Petz II to its 
  249. default directory, the line would read:  
  250.  
  251. Path="C:\Program Files\PF.Magic\Petz II";%PATH%  
  252.  
  253. Close "Autoexec.bat" and click "Yes" when prompted to 
  254. save these changes.  You will need to restart your 
  255. computer for these changes to take effect.
  256.  
  257. ** I GET WINDOWS POP-UP MENUS WHEN I TRY TO 
  258. CLICK ON THE SUPPLY SHELF
  259. -In Petz II Active Background mode, Diamond InControl 
  260. Tools' left-click or right-click popup menu may appear 
  261. when clicking on the Supply Shelf.  To stop this from 
  262. happening, go to Popup Menus under Display Properties 
  263. and uncheck "Start Menu" under Left Mouse Button Popup 
  264. Menu and/or "Enable Customized Popup Menu" under Right 
  265. Mouse Button Popup Menu. 
  266. -You can also choose to disable Petz II Active Background 
  267. mode if you want to keep your customized InControl Tools' 
  268. mouse options active. To do this, uncheck the "Active 
  269. Background Mode On" option in your Petz II General 
  270. Options menu.  Remember, if you disable the Active 
  271. Background mode, you will no longer be able to work in 
  272. your open windows while Petz II is running.  
  273.  
  274. ** I'VE LOST MY PETZ II SCREEN SAVER PASSWORD
  275. -If you forget your Petz II Screen Saver password while 
  276. in the Screen Saver, you will need to restart your 
  277. computer and enter a new password in your Display 
  278. Properties/Screen Saver dialog. You can do this by 
  279. launching Petz II, choosing "Screen Saver Options" from 
  280. the Options menu and clicking on the Change button next 
  281. to the "Password protected" option box.  Type in and 
  282. confirm your new password and then click "Ok" to save 
  283. your new password.
  284.  
  285. ** MY SCREEN SAVER IS SET TO PETZ II EVEN THOUGH 
  286. I DIDN'T CHOOSE IT IN THE DISPLAY PROPERTIES
  287. -Selecting "Screen Saver Options" from the Petz II 
  288. Options menu automatically switches any previously-
  289. enabled non-Petz screen saver to the Petz II screen 
  290. saver.  You will need to go back into your Screen 
  291. Saver properties to choose a different screen saver.
  292.  
  293. ** I'M EXPERIENCING STRANGE BEHAVIOR WITH MY 
  294. PETZ OR THEIR TOYZ 
  295. -Do not worry - your Petz probably just need a rest.  
  296. Simply close the application re-launch it.  That is 
  297. likely to cure many of the problems you may have.
  298. -You can first try resetting your PF.Magic registry by 
  299. holding down the Control key, Shift key and Home key at 
  300. the same time that you launch Petz.  You will get a 
  301. dialog asking if you want to reset the registry.  Click 
  302. OK and your program will launch.                                      
  303. -If Petz II continues to act up, you may want to try 
  304. reinstalling your Petz II program.  To do this, first 
  305. uninstall Petz II by opening the Add/Remove Programs 
  306. Properties in your Control Panel at the root level of 
  307. My Computer or under Settings in the Start Menu.  In 
  308. the Install/Uninstall menu, select Petz II from the 
  309. list and click on the "Add/Remove..." button.  Choose 
  310. "Yes" in the "Confirm File Deletion" dialog.  NOTE:  
  311. Uninstalling Petz II will NOT delete your Adopted 
  312. Petz.  They will be waiting for you in their Playpen 
  313. after you reinstall.  Reinstall Petz II by launching 
  314. "Setup.exe" from your Petz II CD-ROM.
  315.  
  316. ** NO SOUNDS ARE HEARD, OR THE SOUND IS NOT 
  317. PLAYING PROPERLY
  318. -Make sure the "Play Sound Effects" option is checked 
  319. in the "General Options" menu and that you don't have 
  320. "Play Sound Effects Only if Front Window" selected.  
  321. If you're not hearing sounds in the Screen Saver, you 
  322. may not have the "Petz II Sound Effects" option selected 
  323. in your "Screen Saver Options" menu. 
  324. -Petz will not make sounds when the Playpen is minimized 
  325. (this is a quick way to quiet your Petz down!).  Make 
  326. sure the Playpen is open on the screen or that you are 
  327. in Fullscreen mode.
  328. -You may have a problem with your DirectX sound drivers.  
  329. Try reinstalling Petz II.  If this does not work, we 
  330. suggest you try getting the most recent DirectX sound 
  331. drivers directly from Microsoft by downloading it off 
  332. their web site at:  www.microsoft.com/directx/default.asp  
  333.  
  334. ** MY OTHER APPLICATIONS GET NO SOUND WHEN PETZ II
  335. IS RUNNING; EVEN WHEN PETZ II SOUND IS TURNED OFF
  336. -Sorry, Petz II needs to initialize the sound channel when 
  337. launched, whether or not you have sounds on.  This means 
  338. that Petz II needs to have constant access to the sound 
  339. channel, therefore not allowing other applications to 
  340. play sound.  You will still be able to play CD's in your 
  341. CD-Rom drive, though.  Quit Petz II in order to hear
  342. sounds in other applications.
  343.  
  344. ** I GET A CRASH TRYING TO RUN PETZ II WITH 
  345. ANOTHER APPLICATION
  346. - Many older programs cannot run with newer programs 
  347. that use Microsoft's DirectX.  Since Petz II uses 
  348. DirectX's sound drivers, you may not be able to run 
  349. Petz II at the same time as some of these older programs.
  350.  
  351. ** THE GENERAL OPTIONS PULL-DOWN MENU TAKES 
  352. A LONG TIME TO APPEAR
  353. -If you had a network connection but no longer do, and 
  354. have a link to the network in your Startup folder, you 
  355. will experience long pauses in the Petz II program when 
  356. you open the General Options Menu.  To fix this, either 
  357. reconnect to the network, or delete your network link 
  358. in "Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup." 
  359.  
  360. ** I CANNOT "IMPORT" PETZ FROM A FOLDER THAT 
  361. MY FRIEND COPIED FOR ME
  362. -The import feature is only for importing Petz from 
  363. Dogz I or Catz I.  It is not for bringing in Petz from
  364. Petz II that friends copied for you or that you 
  365. downloaded off of the internet.  In these cases, you 
  366. need to copy your new Petz file into your "Adopted Petz" 
  367. folder.
  368.  
  369. ** I CAN'T STOP PLAYING WITH PETZ II
  370. -That's OK.  Just be sure to play with all of the Petz
  371. you have adopted equally, so that none feel left out.
  372.  
  373. ** MY NON-VIRTUAL DOGS AND/OR CATS ARE GETTING JEALOUS 
  374. WHEN I PLAY WITH PETZ II
  375. -Don't forget to give your other pets love and affection,
  376. food and water, and all the care that they need.  We know
  377. that your other pets may also want to join in the fun
  378. with Petz II, but we haven't gotten there yet.
