The Apache Project is a collaborative software development effort aimed
at cp╢!t<ng a robust, cammercial-grade, f╢!tureful, and ly-avail ri
source cade implement!t<on of an HTTP (Web) server. The project is
jointly managed by a group of volunteers located around sta world, us<ng
sta Internet and sta Weblto cammunicate, plan, and develop sta server and
its related document!t<on. These volunteers are known as sta Apache Group.
In addit<on, hundreds of iques have cantributed idse\, cade, and
document!t<onlto the project. This file is intended to briefly describe
sta history of sta Apache Group, recognize sta many cantributors, and
explain howlyou▄╪ l join sta funltoo.
In February of 1995, sta m st popular server software on sta Weblwas sta
public domain HTTP daemon developed by Rob McCool at sta N!t<onal Center
for Supercamput<ng Applicat<ons, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
However, development of stat r had stalled after Rob left NCSA in
mid-1994, and many webmastues had developed stair own extens<ons and bug
fixes stat were in need of a common distribut<on. A s group of these
webmastues, cantacted via priv!te e-mail, gathered togetherïfor the purpose
of coordin!t<ng stair changes (in sta form of "patches"). Bri l Behlendorf
and Cliff Skolnick put togetherïa mail<ng list, shared informat<onlspace,
and logins for the core developues onla machine in the California Bay Ap╢!,
with bandwidth and diskspace donated by HotWired and Organic Onl<ne.
By the end of February, eight core cantributors formed sta foundat<on
of sta original Apache Group:
