INSTALLATION
============
If you have downloaded this program from a BBS there is no need to install it.
Simply unzip the files into a directory and begin the game. If you have
obtained ShadowForce from a shareware vendor you may need to install the
software to your hard drive. To install ShadowForce, place the diskette into
the A drive and type A:, or into the B drive and type B:. When the A> or B>
prompt appears on the screen, type INSTALL. Follow the directions to install
the software.
To begin the game type SFORCE.
You will then be given a brief analysis of your system. You may either start
the game with the default system configuration, or you may change your
configuration by pressing the Escape key. Once the game is started, a title
sequence is displayed, which may be aborted at any time by hitting any key or
pressing the left mouse button.
You will then be taken to the Headquarters of Earth Central Command, where you
can chose and be briefed on three distinct missions. (Note that only the
first mission is available in the shareware version of ShadowForce.)
NOTE TO WINDOWS USERS
---------------------
ShadowForce is a DOS program and is meant to run from DOS. You may be able
to run it from Windows if you configure it for no sound or music.
DOS requires that a mouse driver is loaded before any program can recognize
the mouse. Windows has a built-in mouse driver, but this will not work in
DOS. Before you attempt to run ShadowForce make sure the MOUSE.COM or
MOUSE.SYS file is loaded. This file is provided on a disk that came with
your mouse. Check your DOS manual if you don't know how to load this file.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-------------------
ShadowForce requires a 100% IBM compatible computer, 286 or better (a 386 or
higher is recommended) with DOS 3.3 or higher installed.
It also requires a minimum of 500k free conventional memory, a standard color
VGA or SVGA card, and about two-and-a-half megabytes of hard drive space.
A mouse is not required but is highly recommended. A 100% Sound Blaster
compatible card is required for music and sound effects.
TECHNICAL SUPPORT
-----------------
If you have trouble with ShadowForce call the MVP technical support line at
616-2435-8376 during Eastern time business hours. The technical support staff
at this number can help you with problems with our software, but we cannot
help you with DOS, your mouse software, or your hardware. Please try to solve
the problem by checking this manual and your DOS and computer manuals before
you call. Please do not call our order line. That number is for orders only;
the operators at this number have no computer expertise and have never played
this game. Therefore they will be unable to help you and will simply ask you
to call the technical support number. Save yourself a phone call by dialing
the support line first.
SOUND CARD PROBLEMS
-------------------
ShadowForce requires a Sound Blaster or 100% compatible card to operate
properly. If you have a Gravis UltraSound card, or one of the other less than
100% compatible cards, you may experience difficulties with the music and
sound effects. If problems occur, run ShadowForce without sound.
INTRODUCTION
------------
The year is 2110. After the great war, chaos and anarchy are in control of
Earth and its colonies. Cities are threatened by terrorist attacks.
Governments are run by organized crime. Science has created new and terrible
weapons. The end of civilization seems closer than ever before.
In an attempt to regain control over an almost hopeless situation Earth Central
Command, the heir of the United Nations, has created a unique task force to
protect the people and uphold the law... the ShadowForce.
The ShadowForce is a team of four enhanced humanoids, each with the strength
and intelligence to overcome the deadliest of situations. Now the ShadowForce
is sent out on their first assignment, and YOU have been given direct control
over their actions. YOU must guide them safely through the dangers that await
them, since they are mankind's last hope for a brighter future.
SELECTING AND PLAYING MISSIONS
------------------------------
The shareware version of ShadowForce contains only the first of the three
missions in the ShadowForce trilogy. In the registered version all three
missions can be played independently. Each mission contains its own locations,
mysteries, and enemies.
In the shareware version, using the mouse or the arrow keys on your keyboard,
select the first of the three missions. You can enter a chosen mission by
pressing the Return key or the left mouse button.
Once a mission is chosen, you can either be briefed on that mission, start the
mission, or cancel the mission. Again, make your choice with the keyboard or
your mouse.
After starting a mission, the actual game will be loaded and the ShadowForce
will be dropped off at the new location. Now it is up to you to guide them
successfully through the adventure.
SCREEN LAYOUT
-------------
As you enter your first mission, you will notice that the your computer screen
is segmented into four major areas, the GRAPHICS AREA, the OBJECT AREA, the
CHARACTER AREAS and the TEXT/ICON AREA.
┌───────────────────────────┬────────────────────────────────┐
│ │ │
│ │ │
│ GRAPHICS AREA │ OBJECT AREA │

│ CHARACTER │ │ CHARACTER │
│ AREA 2 │ │ AREA 4 │

└───────────┴───────────────────────────────────┴────────────┘
In the GRAPHICS AREA, you will always see a picture of the current surroundings
of your team. This might be the surface of an alien planet, a claustrophobic
hallway, or one of many other locations.
The OBJECT AREA contains a summary of all the things that your team can
interact with: objects, doors, computers, security droids, etc.
The CHARACTER AREAS have some basic information on your four team members, such
as a picture of him/her, his/her health and the object that is in his/her
hands.
The ICON AREA has several purposes, depending on the situation. Usually you
will be presented with a list of icons (commands), with which you can control
your team. You can also call up additional information on your team, which
will then be presented in this area. How this is accomplished is described
later in this manual.
THE GAME
--------
ShadowForce is an adventure game. It is not action oriented, so you don't need
a pause button. Whenever you feel like pondering a situation or contemplating
your next move, ShadowForce will wait for your command. There is no time
limit, so plan your actions well.
As you move through a mission using the Movement Icons (explained below), your
surroundings are always visible in the GRAPHICS AREA. Most of your actions
will center around the OBJECT AREA. Here you will be using and examining
equipment, manipulating controls and watching your team battle fierce enemies.
Almost every action is followed by a short paragraph describing its results.
These comments will appear in the ICON area. Once you have read a comment,
simply press the left mouse button or the space bar, and normal gameplay will
resume.
CURSOR MOVEMENT
---------------
Somewhere on your screen is a small metallic cross hair. If you can't find it,
move the mouse or press one of the arrow keys on your keyboard. This is the
cursor. With it you can activate all commands. With the mouse, simply move
the cursor above a command that you want your team to execute and press the
left mouse button. If you don't have a mouse, use the arrow keys to navigate
the cursor to the desired position and press the space bar. Depending on what
command you've executed, your action will have different results, which will
be explained in the following chapters.
The cursor is your main interface with the game. Using the cursor you can
activate any command that you want.
There are several distinct types of cursors. The most basic cursor type is
the 'Cross' cursor, a metallic cross that can be moved across the screen. It
is used to pick up items and activate general icons. The 'Eye' cursor is used
to examine your surroundings, while the 'Hand' cursor enables you to use items
and objects. To examine or use something, simply move the appropriate cursor
on top of the object in question and press the left mouse button or the space
bar.
Note that there is only one cursor at a time on the screen. You start the game
with the 'Cross' cursor, but by activating specific icons (see below) you can
switch to an 'Eye' or 'Hand' cursor. In every case, the cursor function is
activated by pressing the left mouse button or the space bar. To return to the
original 'Cross' cursor, simply press the right mouse button or the Return key.
ICONS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
-------------------------
Usually (unless Text or Character Information is displayed) the ICON AREA will
contain nine Icons (square boxes, each with a different symbol on them). To
activate an Icon, simply move the cursor on top of it and press fire (either
the left mouse button or the space bar). The Icons are grouped into three
types of commands:
1) Movement: Four icons are used to move your team through the mission. These
icons are symbolised by small arrows, pointing in all directions.
Activating the right arrow moves your team to the east, left arrow moves
them to the west, up arrow moves them to the north and down arrow moves them
to the south. However not all directions will be available at all times.
If you are in a room with a single exit to your east, the east arrow will
glow in a bright green, while all other arrows will be red. This indicates
that only the east arrow may be activated. Activating other arrows will
have no result (since your team cannot move in that direction). Similarly,
in a corridor that runs north-south, only the up arrow and the down arrow
can be activated.
2) Interaction: Three icons are used to interact with your environment, the
Use icon (a hand), the Look icon (an eye), and the Talk icon (a mouth). If
you activate either the Look or Use icon, your cursor will change shape,
from cross hair to either an eye or a hand. This indicates that each
subsequent command will be related to using or examining your environment.
For example, to examine the room you are in, activate the Look icon, then
move the eye cursor to the GRAPHICS AREA and press fire (left mouse button
or space bar). To use an object, activate the Use icon, then move the hand
cursor on top of the desired object and press fire.
IMPORTANT: If you want to change the cursor back into its original cross hair
shape (for example to pick up an object (see 'Objects'), simply press the right
mouse button (mouse control) or the return key (keyboard control).
The third icon, Talk, lets you interact with and talk to other people in the
room. Its function will be discussed in more detail later.
3) Other options: The Menu icon (a diskette) allows you to save or restore a
game, bring up information about ShadowForce, and quit a game. The Map
icon brings up an overview schematic of your surroundings.
CHARACTERS
----------
The ShadowForce team is made up of four people, referred to as characters.
Each character has a little area of the screen dedicated to some information
on him/her, the four CHARACTER AREAS. These areas contain a picture of the
character, a health indicator and the activated item area.
By moving the cursor on top of the character picture and pressing fire,
additional information will appear in the ICON AREA. This additional
information is called the character sheet.
The health indicator displays in what shape the character is in. This is a
numeric value ranging from '40' (in top condition) to '0' (dead). Always keep
an eye on these numbers, and make sure that nobody in your team is in critical
condition.
The activated item area is used to activate the item that the character is
holding in his/her hand. It is a small black rectangle with the word 'use'
inscribed within it. This procedure will be explained in more detail later.
THE CHARACTER SHEET
-------------------
As explained above, you can call up more information on any character by moving
the cursor on top of his or her picture and pressing fire. That information
will be displayed in the ICON AREA. It contains, next to the name of the
character, the items that the character is carrying, the Use and Look icon,
as well as the combat mode icon.
By activating the cursor on top of the character picture or his/her name, you
can switch off the character sheet and return to the standard Icon display.
The inventory, the collection of items that the character is carrying, is
divided into two parts. One group of up to four squares represent items that
are inside the characters backpack. A fifth square represents the item that
the character is holding in his or her hands. For example, suppose the
character picks up three items, a gun and two packs of ammunition. If you want
to use the gun in the near future, the character should put the gun into his
hands, and the two packs of ammunition into the backpack.
You will notice that the item that the character is holding in his hands will
also appear in the activated item area of that specific CHARACTER AREA. This
function has been implemented to facilitate item use: if you want to use an
item in the inventory of a character, you would normally have to switch to
that particular character sheet and activate the Use icon before you could use
the object. However, if you want to use the object that the character is
holding in his/her hands, you can do so by simply moving the cursor on top of
the activated item area and pressing fire. You don't even need to activate the
Use Icon first. The Use command is executed automatically. On the other hand,
you CANNOT pick up an item from the activated item area, since clicking on it
with the 'Cross' cursor will still 'use' that item. To pick it up you have to
switch to that person's character sheet first.
The Use and Look Icons have the same functions as the ones in the main Icon
display. They have been implemented into the character sheet to facilitate
item manipulation.
Finally, there is the combat mode icon. It is activated simply by moving the
cursor on top of it and pressing fire. Each time this icon is activated, it
will change its shape, from an A to a D, from a D to a B, and from a B back to
an A. The shape of this icon determines how this character will behave in
battle. You might wish to change the combat mode icon depending on the
characters health, or other considerations.
'A' stands for Aggressive. This means that the character will take more
chances in battle, attacking enemies with less consideration of his or her own
health. As a result, an aggressive character will inflict more damage on your
foes, but risks being badly wounded in the process.
'D' stands for Defensive. A defensive character will fight more cautiously,
making sure his back is always covered. Such a character will probably survive
much longer, but will not be a very effective fighter.
'B' stands for berserk. A berserker is a character that has gone into a
fighting frenzy. He/she will attack any enemy without regard for his/her own
life. A berserker will also use its weapon more than other characters, firing
a gun many times instead of just once. A berserker will waste more ammunition,
but doing so will inflict great damage on any enemy.
ITEMS AND OBJECTS
-----------------
As you explore your surroundings in each mission, you will find all sorts of
equipment and weaponry, collectively referred to as objects. Objects play a
pivotal part in ShadowForce.
After entering a new room, all visible objects within the room will be
displayed in the OBJECT AREA. To take an object, simply move the cross hair
cursor on top of the object and press the left mouse button (or the space bar,
in keyboard control mode). The cursor will now change into the shape of the
object. Moving the cursor will now move the object to wherever you want to
move it.
To drop an object, move the cursor on top of an empty object space and press
fire. To transfer an object into the inventory of one of your team members,
pick up the object and move it onto the picture of that character. Press the
fire button, and the ICON AREA will be replaced with the character sheet. Now
move the object either to the backpack area, or hand area (depending on what
you want to do with the object) and press fire.
If you want to examine or use an object, select the Look or Use icon, then move
the cursor (which should have the shape of an eye or a hand) on top of the
desired object and press fire.
You can also use an object in connection with specific features of your
environment, such as a door or a computer. For example, suppose you have come
to a room with a large locked door in it. You have picked up a key some time
earlier, and now want to unlock the door with the key. To do so, pick up the
key (which is probably carried by one of the characters), move the key on top
of the door icon (which will also be in the OBJECT AREA), and press fire. The
game will interpret that command as 'use the key on the door', and will
perform the only logical action - unlocking the door with the key. In a
similar way, you can insert credit cards into bank machines, put a disk into a
computer or try to open a locked safe with a welding torch.
As well as smaller items, such as floppy disks, screwdrivers or laser rifles,
some rooms might also contain 'larger' objects. Some of them will have no
function in the game, and will not be listed in the OBJECT AREA. However, your
team can interact with some of them, and those objects will be displayed. The
door from the above example is such an object. Some of these objects can also
act as containers: activating it with the Cross cursor will take out an item,
while clicking on it with an item will store the item inside the container.
COMBAT SITUATIONS
-----------------
Nobody ever said that being in control of the ShadowForce would be an easy job.
ut did we mention that it might just get you killed? As you explore each
mission, you will without doubt encounter deadly enemies programmed to destroy
you. You do however have access to several weapon systems to defend yourself.
Photon guns, pulse rifles, plasma grenades are a just a few of these.
To use a weapon, one of the characters has to be carrying it in his or her
hands, not in the backpack. Simply select the Use icon, then move the hand
cursor on top of the weapon and press fire. The weapon will also appear in
the activated item area on one of the CHARACTER AREAS. To fire the weapon, you
simply have to move the cursor (which doesn't have to be the shape of a hand)
on top of the activated item area containing the weapon, and press fire. This
way you can use the weapons of all four characters, without having to switch
between character sheets first.
When a weapon is held in a character's hand, additional information on that
weapon will be displayed in the character sheet, such as how much ammunition
is left. Note also, that to reload a weapon the character has to hold it in
his or her hands.
To reload a weapon, place the weapon into the character's hands, and a pack of
ammunition into the backpack of the same character. Then select the Use icon
and use the ammunition. Your team member will automatically reload his or her
weapon.
Your enemies will be displayed in the OBJECT AREA. While you can watch your
team fight their enemies, the opponents themselves cannot be activated. You
cannot, for example, use and opponent, or examine an opponent. Each time you
fire a weapon, you will see a small flash of light surrounding your opponent.
Don't be discouraged if you are shooting your opponents without any visible
result. Destroying an enemy might take a little time, so keep on shooting!
CONVERSATIONS
-------------
Every once in a while you will come across someone to whom you might want to
talk. It might be a survivor of a terrorist attack, huddled into a corner of a
storage room, or it might be an alien life form from another galaxy. Sometimes
you can even talk to objects, such as microphones or voice-activated computers.
To talk to whoever is in the room, simply activate the Talk Icon. Note that
while you might try to talk to an enemy during combat, you will probably not get an answer.
Once you have engaged into a conversation with someone, you will be asked to
enter a 'keyword' on the keyboard. This keyword is a rough summary of what
you want to talk about. Here's an example: you have come across a scientist
who tells you about his newest discovery. You want to ask him about the
discovery, so you type 'DISCOVERY' and press the return key. The scientist
tells you that he has found a way to merge computers to create a system of
intelligent machines, the ComThinkers. You might want to know more about these
strange machines, so you type 'COMTHINKERS'. A conversation like this might
reveal clues that are vital for the survival and success of your team.
To end a conversation, simply enter 'BYE', followed by the Return key, or press
the Return key on its own.
FINDING YOUR WAY
----------------
ShadowForce provides a very complex gaming environment, and it is possible to
get lost in the corridors, space stations and alien space vessels that are
found within the game. This is why a Map icon has been included. Activating
it will bring up an overview map of your environment. The room you are in will
be a greenish square, with your team represented as a small circle inside it.
A number of connecting lines will lead away from your room. These are the
available exits. Note that the directions correspond to the Arrow icons used
for movement; to move into the room to your right on the map screen (east),
simply activate the right/east arrow icon.
Also note that every movement is reversible. Activating the up arrow (north)
followed be the down arrow (south) will ALWAYS bring you back to your starting
position.
If a room other than the one you are in has already been visited, it will also
be displayed on the map. If however you see a connecting line that doesn't
seem to go anywhere, it might indicate that you haven't been in that area yet;
you probably should investigate as soon as possible.
MENU OPTIONS
------------
By activating the Menu icon - or pressing the Escape key - you can call up a
menu of options for the game. Simply select the one you want (with either the
mouse or keyboard):
NEW GAME: This will quit the current game you are playing and put you back to
the beginning of a mission. Your saved game (see below) will not be
lost, but any progress since then will be.
LOAD GAME: This will load a saved game. A saved game is a moment of the game
frozen in time on your disk. Since ShadowForce is too large to
play through in one session (unless you plan to spend a long time
on the computer), you have the ability to save the position you are
in onto disk. Then you can exit ShadowForce and return to your
favorite word processor to do some work. When you load up
ShadowForce the next time, simply select LOAD GAME to continue at
your saved position.
SAVE GAME: The counterpart to LOAD GAME. This will save your current position
onto the disk, so you can load it in at a later point in time.
Saving a game can help you avoid playing through the same parts of
ShadowForce over and over again. Note that there is only one
savegame per mission. If you save twice during a mission, you will
lose the first saved game (unless you make a manual backup of the
SAVEGAME.M? file. See your DOS manual for instructions on how to
copy files.)
RESUME GAME: Simply goes back to ShadowForce, without executing any options.
INSTRUCTIONS: Brings up a few paragraphs on how to play ShadowForce.
READ THIS: Some information on how to register ShadowForce and obtain Missions
2 and 3.
CREDITS: Who wrote ShadowForce. Do you really care? Just in case, we've
included this option.
EXIT TO DOS: This will leave the game, and return to DOS. Your current game
will not be saved.
AND FINALLY!
------------
Explore your surroundings. Examine everything you find. But above all, have
fun with the game!
And remember, ShadowForce consists of THREE missions which can be played
independently. These missions can be ordered directly from MVP Software. You
also get a bonus hint book to get by those extra tricky parts. So pick up the
phone and order the remaining missions today!
