  1. ABOUT YOUR FREE FONTS ... AND 35HEADS ... AND MORE!

  3. Please read this file. It tells you:

  5.   How to install your new fonts!
  6.    (Not really very difficult.)

  8.   What our rights and obligations are!
  9.    (Not much actually. It is just a font, after all.)

  15. INSTALLATION
  16.  
  17. For TrueType installation, simply open the Windows 3.1 Control Panel, 
  18. click on "Fonts," and follow the normal procedure to add each font. If 
  19. this is the first time you have added TrueType fonts to your system, 
  20. you may need to check your Windows manual.

  23. YOUR RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS

  25. These free fonts are provided as shareware. However, you have already 
  26. fulfilled your obligation by receiving the complete archived file 
  27. which includes the fonts and the promotional information about other 
  28. fonts which you may purchase. For having downloaded and read these 
  29. files, you may use the free fonts for as long as you wish.

  31. You have unlimited rights to use these fonts in any form your software 
  32. can use it ... except to re-create font files. You may not do anything 
  33. with the complete font file itself except install it, make backup 
  34. copies, and let your software use it to format and create characters. 
  35. You may not convert the font to another format and re-distribute it.

  37. Your installation and use of the free fonts signifies your acceptance 
  38. of these terms.

  52. 35HEADS -- QUALITY FONTS, REAL CHEAP!

  54. If enjoy these fonts, then read the following offer! It's your chance 
  55. to get more than 35 high-quality fonts for next to nothing (... less 
  56. than half a buck a font).

  59. WHAT FONTS ARE AVAILABLE?
  60.  
  61. There are more than 35 fonts in the complete package. There are fun 
  62. fonts, traditional (but seldom-seen) fonts, very bold fonts, light 
  63. fonts -- in a large range of designs.

  65. Why don't you take a look now? Copy the file SEE35HDS.EXE to some 
  66. temporary directory that has about 300,000 bytes available. "Run" the 
  67. file. It will self-extract into a Windows CardFile file. Use Windows 
  68. CardFile software to take a look at all the fonts in the package. 
  69. You'll also find some additional technical information and details not 
  70. included here.

  72. All of the fonts are intended for use in larger sizes. As headline 
  73. type. As decorative type. For use in logo and other design work. Hence 
  74. the name "35HEADS." 
  75.  
  76. Some of the fonts are readable in text sizes all the way down to 5-
  77. point. But you probably already have standard text fonts, such as 
  78. Times or Helvetica, which will work better for paragraphs of body 
  79. copy. All of the fonts are kerned and hinted.

  82. WHERE DID THESE FONTS COME FROM?
  83.  
  84. I've been in advertising and design for twenty years and jumped from 
  85. drafting table to PC five years ago. I had been wanting an Egyptian 
  86. Bold Condensed font for Windows, but couldn't find any available. So 
  87. two years ago, I sat down one weekend and created the font in 
  88. CorelDraw!. I spent a lot of time working the bugs out of the font-
  89. generating system. I released that font, which I named "Cairo," into 
  90. the freeware market and became famous. (Well, semi-semi-famous.) (Due 
  91. to another font distributor's use of the name Cairo, I have since re-
  92. named the revised/hinted/kerned version "Akenaten.")

  94. With the bugs worked out, I then created another font, and another. 
  95. Suddenly I had 15 fonts and started selling the whole package for 
  96. ridiculously cheap prices. (Well, semi-ridiculous.) Soon, I had gotten 
  97. up to 25 different fonts. (It's like peeling wallpaper. You get 
  98. started and you can't stop.) And the ridiculously cheap income kept me 
  99. in new software, hardware upgrades and an occasional dinner out. And 
  100. this year the income bought me Fontographer for the PC. I had sworn 
  101. that I was done with font-making when I finished the first 25. Now 
  102. here we are talking about 35HEADS.

  104. I have always tried to create fonts that were not available in 
  105. computer-usable format. Occasionally, after I've created a font, I 
  106. learn that it is available elsewhere, though certainly not at the low 
  107. prices you'll pay me. Some are not available in any electronic form. 
  108. My complete package of fonts will not be available through any other 
  109. source. The whole package will not be released into the public domain. 
  110. There's only one way to get 'em, and it'll cost you about half a 
  111. dollar a font.

  114. WHY SO CHEAP?

  116. I'm often on the buying end of software, just like you. Now I'm 
  117. selling ... so rather than ask $10 or even $5 for each font that's 
  118. already been created, I'm asking less than a dollar! I'm not getting 
  119. rich, but maybe I'll get compensated for the weeks I've put in 
  120. creating the fonts. I don't have a giant investment to recover. I've 
  121. been in marketing long enough to know that the traditional wisdom is 
  122. to charge whatever the market will bear. Well, I don't have to answer 
  123. to anyone except my own conscience this time. And it says to charge a 
  124. reasonable amount and then be happy that people are finding value in 
  125. my efforts and putting the results to good use. (Sorry if that sounds 
  126. sappy, but it's nice to be honest.)

  129. IF THEY'RE THAT CHEAP, ARE THEY ANY GOOD?

  133. Take a close look at the free fonts you've installed. Print a "type 
  134. showing" or something else using them. If you're happy with these, 
  135. you'll be happy with the others.

  137. Thousands of users are currently using my fonts. They include 
  138. CompuServe and America OnLine downloaders of free fonts plus 
  139. purchasers of the complete font packages. These fonts were carefully 
  140. crafted, character by character, in CorelDraw! and Fontographer. All 
  141. fonts include kerning pairs and hinting.

  143. The font originally named "Cairo" was included on disk with last 
  144. year's book "The Font Problem Solver" by David D. Busch, published by 
  145. Business One Irwin.

  149. not yet kerned and hinted.

  175. CompuServe and America OnLine. If you've downloaded any of those,

  189. send their own checks!). You may not load the purchased fonts onto any 
  190. bulletin board.
