  3. Chess Mentor 1.4 Demo
  4. ---------------------

  6. Chess Mentor (R), developed by Aficionado, Inc., enables all levels of
  7. chess players to rapidly improve their chess skills in an efficient,
  8. effective, and pleasurable manner.
  9.  
  10. Chess Mentor is not another chess engine.  Rather, it is a revolutionary
  11. and highly interactive software product which combines the power of the
  12. modern computer with expert content developed by Chess Masters.  The result
  13. is an amazingly effective learning method, akin to actually training with a
  14. Master.
  15.  
  16. Users of Chess Mentor learn through active participation and discovery with
  17. materials authored by Masters including IM Jeremy Silman, IM John Grefe, IM
  18. Eric Tangborn, IM Marc Leski, FM Craig Mar, and FM Mike Arne; soon GM
  19. Jonathan Tisdall and other IMs and GMs.

  22. Instructions for downloading and installing the Chess Mentor 1.4 Demo:

  25. 1.  Download the file CMDEMO14.ZIP into a temporary directory on your PC
  26.     and, using PKUNZIP or a similar utility, extract the contents of the
  27.     file into the same directory.
  28.  
  29. 2.  The two files SETUP.EXE and SETUP.W02 constitute a self-installing
  30.     executable which installs the Chess Mentor Demo, an Uninstaller, and
  31.     some text files.  The third file in CMDEMO14.ZIP is a copy of this text
  32.     file.
  33.  
  34. 3.  Use the Windows Program Manager File-Run command to run:
  35.  
  36.         <download dir>\SETUP.EXE
  37.  
  38.     depending on the directory used for the download.  Note that double
  39.     clicking on SETUP.EXE in the File Manager can also be used to initiate
  40.     the installation.
  41.  
  42. 4.  The installation program will prompt you for a destination directory
  43.     name for the Chess Mentor files.  The default directory is C:\CM_DEMO,
  44.     but another name and/or drive letter may be specified if desired.
  45.  
  46. 5.  Follow the remaining instructions which will be displayed on the screen
  47.     to complete the installation.
  48.  
  49. 6.  The private Chess Mentor files will be copied to the specified
  50.     destination directory, the common system files will be copied to the
  51.     \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and an INI file will be created in the
  52.     \WINDOWS directory.  A program group named "Chess Mentor 1.4" will be
  53.     created, and a number of program items will be placed in it, including
  54.     an Uninstaller utility.  A full report of the installation can be found
  55.     in the file INSTALL.LOG in the Chess Mentor demo directory.

  57. 7.  Unless SHARE must be installed, the Chess Mentor installation does NOT
  58.     modify any of your system files, including AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS,
  59.     SYSTEM.INI or WIN.INI.  If SHARE must be installed, either a device
  60.     driver is added to SYSTEM.INI if Windows is in Enhanced mode, or a call
  61.     to SHARE.EXE is added to AUTOEXEC.BAT if Windows is in Standard mode.

  63. 8.  If, at the end of the installation, a message is displayed indicating
  64.     that you should restart Windows, or reboot your PC, please perform the
  65.     requested action.  Either SHARE was installed, or one or more system
  66.     files were in use during the installation, and the restart or reboot
  67.     action is required to fully complete the installation of the Chess
  68.     Mentor Demo.

  70. 9.  To start the Chess Mentor Demo, double click on the "Chess Mentor 1.4
  71.     Demo" icon in the Chess Mentor 1.4 Program Group.

  73. 10. If you have any trouble with the downloading or installation of the
  74.     Chess Mentor demo, please do not hesitate to contact Aficionado for
  75.     assistance.

  77. 11. NOTE: The two files, SETUP.EXE and SETUP.W02, will each fit on a
  78.     1.44Mb diskette for easy distribution to others after the download.  To
  79.     install the Demo, insert the first diskette (containing SETUP.EXE) and
  80.     run SETUP.EXE.  The installer will ask for the second diskette (with
  81.     SETUP.W02) when it is needed; otherwise the installation will proceed
  82.     as described above.
