  44. This version is primarily intended for users of Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
  45. 3.1/3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11.
  46.  
  47. Note that this version is a 16-bit program and therefore you do not need
  48. to have Win32s(R) installed on your computer.
  49.  
  50. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT(R), you can download 
  51. a version designed and optimized for these platforms at

  54. This product enables you to browse and view HTML documents on the network, 
  55. in addition to documents on the World Wide Web or Internet. Other services, 
  56. such as Gopher and FTP, and NNTP news support, are also available.

  58. Instructions for installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 for
  59. Windows 3.1 on your system are provided below.

  67. - A Setup wizard that walks you through installation
  68. - A browser that enables you to browse and view HTML documents
  69.   on the World Wide Web or Internet
  70. - A mail client that enables you to send and receive mail (provided 
  71.   you have an account to do so)
  72. - A TCP/IP protocol stack that is necessary to access the Internet
  73. - A Dialer that enables you to dial your Internet service provider 
  74.   number

  92. INSTALLING MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER

  95. Installing from the Internet
  96. ----------------------------

  98. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, carry out 
  99. the following procedure.
  100.  
  101. 1. Create a temporary directory on your computer.
  102. 2. Choose to download Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, 
  103.    and save the file Dlfull.exe to the temporary directory.
  104. 3. In File Manager, run Dlfull.exe to extract the program files.
  105. 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
  106.    with existing TCP/IP connections.
  107. 5. In File Manager, run Setup.exe. Setup installs files in the 
  108.    directory you specify.
  109. 6. If you want, you can delete the temporary directory you created.
  110. 7. Run Internet Explorer.

  113. Upgrading over Version 1.5 and Version 1.6 Beta
  114. -----------------------------------------------
  115.  
  116. If you are upgrading from the version 1.5 or version 1.6 beta, please 
  117. read the following special notes.
  118.  
  119. - The format of Iexplore.ini has changed, so Setup will make a backup
  120.   copy of your current Iexplore.ini file to a file called Ie16ini.sav.
  121. - You will need to reapply any user-selectable settings, such as proxy 
  122.   servers, in the new version.
  123. - Your Favorites and History list will be preserved.
  124. - Win32s is not required for this version, so if you installed Win32s 
  125.   specifically to run the version 1.6 beta, then you can remove it from
  126.   your system. Please refer to the following URL for instructions on 
  127.   removing Win32s from your system.

  132. LAN Installations
  133. -----------------
  134.  
  135. If you already have access to the Internet through your LAN,
  136. you will be able to use the Microsoft Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. 
  137. (If you are not sure whether you currently have access, consult your network 
  138. administrator.)
  139.  
  140. If you have access, your LAN administrator should provide you with 
  141. proxy servers that also can be used, provided they are CERN compliant.
  142.  
  143. To install Internet Explorer, you need to do the following:
  144.  
  145. - Make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol installed.
  146.  
  147. - Run the installation in Custom mode, and make sure that the TCP/IP 
  148.   Stack And Dialer check box is not selected.
  149.  
  150. Proxy servers can also be used, provided they are CERN compliant.
  151. To enable use of a proxy server, choose Options from the View menu,
  152. and then on the Proxy tab, type the data needed for your proxy server.

  155. Before Using the Mail Client
  156. ----------------------------
  157.  
  158. This software contains a Mail client that will enable you to send,
  159. receive, and store messages, provided that you have an e-mail account.
  160.  
  161. The first time you run Mail, it will take you through configuration steps 
  162. that are needed before you can use Mail. You will be able to use Mail 
  163. only if you complete these steps.
  164.  
  165. You will be prompted to enter the following configuration information:
  166.  
  167. - Names of network servers used to send and receive your mail (for example,
  168.   POP3 server name and SMTP server name)
  169. - Mail protocols used to send and receive mail (SMTP, POP3, and so on)
  170. - Your login name and password on the server from which you retrieve e-mail
  171. - The network domain name or IP address of your computer
  172. - Your e-mail address
  173.  
  174. If you are not ready to enter this information, contact your system
  175. administrator or your Internet service provider for assistance.

  178. Installing a Modem and Using the Dialer
  179. ---------------------------------------
  180.  
  181. Please note that this version of the Dialer will support only COM modems. This
  182. means that PCMCIA and other internal non-COM modems will not be supported.
  183. They will be supported in future releases.
  184.  
  185. Before setting up, please make sure that your modem is turned on and properly
  186. connected. Setup will try to detect and configure your modem. If the detection
  187. fails, you can still select the modem manually from the list of supported
  188. modems.
  189.  
  190. Note: When you select a modem manually, the default connection speed will be 
  191. 9600 baud. Therefore, you should manually select a connection speed that matches
  192. your modem's capabilities, in order to get the maximum connection speed.

  195. Installation with Existing TCP/IP Connections and ISP Accounts
  196. --------------------------------------------------------------
  197.  
  198. Microsoft Internet Explorer has been installed and tested with several 
  199. of the most popular Internet access products available today. If it is 
  200. configured properly, you should be able to use the TCP/IP protocol and 
  201. dialer (via Winsock.dll) provided with these products to connect with your ISP. 
  202. It is not necessary to install the Dialer and TCP/IP stack that are provided 
  203. with Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  204.  
  205. In general, all that is required is that you configure the PATH command 
  206. in your Autoexec.bat file so that Microsoft Internet Explorer can find 
  207. the Winsock.dll file you are using to connect to the Internet. For 
  208. example, if your Winsock.dll file is in the directory C:\Connect, add
  209. a line directly under your current PATH command that reads:
  210.     PATH=%PATH%;C:\CONNECT
  211.  
  212. Following are procedures for installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 
  213. over some common Internet access products. Other packages available 
  214. include FTP Software, Network TeleSystems, and shareware from Trumpet 
  215. Software (http://www.trumpet.com.au/wsk/winsock.htm).

  218.    Internet Chameleon 4.5
  219.    ----------------------
  220.  
  221. 1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to the suggested default 
  222.    directory (C:\Iexplore).
  223. 2. Make sure that the Internet Chameleon directory is in your path. 
  224.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  225.    file, and then restart your computer.
  226. 3. Run the Internet Chameleon dialer program (from the Custom icon).
  227. 4. Select the line corresponding to your current Internet service 
  228.    provider, and make sure that the Dial On Demand command on the 
  229.    Setup menu has a check mark by it. This makes the dialer 
  230.    program run when Microsoft Internet Explorer tries to 
  231.    connect to the Internet.
  232. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet icon 
  233.    in Program Manager.
  234.  
  235. If you have configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, an 
  236. Internet connection will be made when you first enter an Internet 
  237. address in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  238.  
  239. If you have not configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, 
  240. you need to start that program before you start Internet Explorer.

  243.    Netscape Navigator 1.2 Personal Edition
  244.    ---------------------------------------
  245.  
  246. 1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to the directory that contains 
  247.    your Netscape Navigator files. For example, if you installed the 
  248.    Netscape browser in the default directory (C:\Netscape), place the 
  249.    Microsoft Internet Explorer files in the same location.
  250. 2. Run Internet Explorer.

  253.    Other Internet Dialer Packages
  254.    ------------------------------
  255.  
  256. 1. Using the Custom setup option, install Microsoft Internet Explorer 
  257.    to the suggested default directory without the TCP/IP stack and dialer.
  258. 2. Make sure that the Internet dialer directory is in your path. 
  259.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  260.    file, and then restart your computer.
  261. 3. Run your existing Internet dialer program.
  262. 4. Choose to enable Dial on Demand (if your dialer supports this option). 
  263.    This makes the dialer program run when Microsoft Internet Explorer tries 
  264.    to connect to the Internet.
  265. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet icon 
  266.    in Program Manager.
  267.  
  268. If you have configured the dialer to dial on demand, an Internet
  269. connection will be made when you first enter an Internet address in
  270. Internet Explorer.
  271.  
  272. If you have not configured the dialer to dial on demand, you need to start 
  273. that program before you start Internet Explorer.

  276. Making a Backup Copy of the Software
  277. ------------------------------------
  278.  
  279. 1. Make sure that you have three disks (3.5" disks with 1.44 MB capacity).
  280. 2  After you have downloaded the software and have run Dlfull.exe (see 
  281.    "Installing from the Internet" section earlier in this file) your 
  282.    temporary directory contains all the files that you need to make disks.
  283. 3. Copy the file Ie31_3.cab on your disk number 3.
  284. 4. Copy the file Ie31_2.cab on your disk number 2.
  285. 5. Copy the following files on your disk number 1.
  286.     Files.inf
  287.     Readme.txt
  288.     Iew31_1.cab
  289.     Setup.exe
  290.     Install.lst

  296. KNOWN ISSUES AND BUGS
  297. ---------------------
  298.  
  299. * No inline video.
  300. * No background sounds.
  301. * No Internet shortcuts.
  302. * Sending mail using the Send button or command: You will be able to send
  303.   e-mail only if you have already installed a MAPI mail client.
  304. * Does not work with Windows NT Challenge Response Authentication in
  305.   Microsoft Internet Information Server. To work around this, make sure
  306.   the Allow Anonymous option is enabled in the WWW Service Properties dialog 
  307.   box in Internet Information Server.
  308. * You cannot open another instance of Internet Explorer by double-clicking
  309.   an .htm file in File Manager or double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon
  310.   in Program Manager. To open a new instance of Internet Explorer, choose
  311.   New Window from the File menu.
  312. * AIFF files have poor playback quality.
  313. * If you have voice messages waiting on your phone line (rapid beeps), our 
  314.   Dialer fails to dial out on the line. This can be remedied (for Hayes-compatible 
  315.   modems only) if, in the file Modems2.ini, at the end of the line for the 
  316.   InitString setting, you set "blind dialing" by typing:
  317.   S6=5
  318. * There is no place in the Dialer where a static IP address can be set up; only 
  319.   dynamic host addressing can be used to connect to a PPP server. The static IP 
  320.   address can be set by editing an entry in the connection file (*.con). The 
  321.   section and entries are:
  322.  
  323.   [IP]
  324.   UseSpecificIpAddr=Yes
  325.   SpecificIPAddress={ your static IP here }
  326.   IpAddress={ your static IP here }
  327.  
  328.   Only the IpAddress setting is required for the static IP address to work. If you 
  329.   want the static IP address to be used again the next time the connection file is 
  330.   changed and written, set UseSpecificIpAddr to "Yes" and SpecificIPAddress to a copy of 
  331.   IpAddress. Otherwise, writing to the connection file will reset the IpAddress 
  332.   to 0.0.0.0.
  333. * Internet Explorer might have difficulty loading a very large number of newsgroups 
  334.   (>16000). If your news server has a large number of newsgroups, you should use a 
  335.   dedicated newsreader to browse the groups.
  336. * If you are creating a new connection and try to cancel that connection 
  337.   part of the way through the creation process, the file that represents 
  338.   the new connection is still created. If you try to use that connection 
  339.   name again, you will see the following message:
  340.  
  341.     The entry name is invalid.  It is already in use.
  342.  
  343.   If you want to use that specific connection name, you need to find the 
  344.   .con file that was created for that connection and delete it from your 
  345.   hard disk.
