Most missions available for X-Wing are the ones that fit into the
timeframe of the "Star Wars" trilogy. Still there are some that have NO
limited timeframe, a good example of the latter is some of the Bonus missions
in the CD-ROM version of X-Wing. This missions was designed to fit
particulary in the timeframe starting with Kevin J. Anderson's book trilogy,
(Jedi Search, Dark Aprentice, and ......forgot the name of the last one).
The Rebel Alliance is called New Republic now and Rebels have more forces
available in a routine escort, (well--maybe not so routine), than the
Imperials have in a specially planed attack.
If you want to see where the names of the ships came from, they are
after the installation instructions. Here are the installation instructions:
Use an unzip utility to unzip ESCORT.ZIP into your X-Wing ..../MISSIONS
directory. I used PKUNZIP 2.04 which is available on CompuServe's Gamers' forum
in Library 1--General Information. (GO GAMERS to access the forum).
Then, if you have the disk version of X-Wing, follow the instructions
below, but if you have the X-Wing Collector's CD-ROM (like me) then go to the
instructions for that version that follow the instructions for the disk version.
==========X-Wing Disk Version==========
Backup the original mission DEFECT.XWI and its briefing DEFECT.BRF
to DEFECT.XW and DEFECT.BR. You can virtually use any name you want but these
names will be easily recognized when you want to restore the origina mission
later. This is how my command line would look like if I had the disk version:
copy defect.xwi defect.xw
copy defect.brf defect.br
(You are supposed to be in your ...../MISSION directory of course.)
Then you copy the the ESCORT.XWI and ESCORT.BRF into their place. My
command line would look like the following:
copy escort.xwi defect.xwi
copy escort.brf defect.brf
Note: I recommend replacing the original DEFECT mission only if you have
completed it as a part of Tour Duty 1. You should have because its
the first mission of the tour.
To play the mission--start X-Wing, choose the pilot that has already
completed TOD 1 Mission 1, go to the Historical Missions section, and replay
that mission. It should have loaded my mission, if it didn't, then you did
something wrong!!!
==========X-Wing Collector's CD-ROM=======
Before you even start, you need the XCDR utility to play this mission
with X-Wing CD-ROM version. Its avilable on CompuServe in Flight Sim forum
(GO FSFORUM) in Library 7 or 21. If you can't find it there, send me e-mail
and I'll send it to you via the same way, it will be an UNREGISTERED version.
I urge you to register it for $10.00, the author should be compensated for his
work and creativity on this excellent program. You'll fing HOW to register in
the program docu, entation file. I'm planning to register it very soon!!!
Make a subdirectory in your X-Wing directory entitled MISSIONS, if you
have it already, you're in fine shape. Then unzip the ESCORT.ZIP file into
there. Switch to directory where the XCDR utility is. Launch it by typing its
command line and the name of the included reference file (escort.xcd). In my
case I typed in the following when I tested this mission, (its briefing took
most of the time!!):
xcdr d:\games\xwing\missions\escort.xcd
This will replace Bonus Mission 6 in your game.
This pretty much completes the boring installation part of this mission. Have
fun with it!!! Good Luck!!!
=========================OTHER STUFF=========================
Where did the names of the ships come from:
STD Chimaera---Timothy Zahn's trilogy
STD Hera---Meant to be named after one of Admiral Daala's 3 Star Destroyers
in Kevin J. Anderson's trilogy. But the right name was "Hydra".
I didn't feel like renaming it then because Hydra was destroyed in
the Jedi Search. Oh well,......
CRS Defiance---your baseship of operations in this game
CRS Startide---on of the Calamari Cruisers in the Dark Aprentice by Kevin
J. Anderson.
CRS Kathleen---named after CRS Cathleen that appears in several missions in
this game.
CRS Ranger---made it up.
CRS Orthavan---one of the Calamari Cruisers in the last installment of Timothy
Zahn's book trilogy--The Last Command
X-W Rogue---our favorite starfighter squadron from the "Star Wars" movie
trilogy. You know, the one that has Wedge Antilles in it.
X-W Terra---Greek or Roman (whatever) name for our planet--Earth
The reason for naming the squadron this has its own story.....
You can modify the mission details, but please don't change the basic
plot of this mission. I would like to see if anyone could improve the mission's
briefing and/or make the mission harder. I would really like for you to send
me a copy of your modified mission. My e-mail address is listed below.
I'm also planning a whole tour of duty as soon as I can get some ideas
for the plot line that the missions will follow. Ideas are also welcome.
Please mail me ALL!!!!! the comments that you have, (i.e, the mission sucks,
its excellent, etc.,).

I will soon have an additional e-mail address!! (When the system comes into
service.) It will be the following:

Internet:falcon62@compuserve.com
Those addresses will add to NOT replace my current e-mail addresses.
