I felt - pleased, when I was assigned a game of a mere two disks.
This new adventure game from Codemasters is "Absolutely
Brilliant", according to Codemasters. I beg to differ.
Low quality EGA/VGA graphics are substandard in today's gaming
market, but Codeamsters still decided to use this obsolete
standard. The characters and backgrounds are drawn so poorly I'd
rather play an ansi version online. The movements are archaically
reminiscent of Maniac Mansion and there is very little background
movement. In the "arcade" sequences you have to put up with one
color backgrounds and lame enemies and platforms. These guys are
worse than the makers of Streetball.
Animation? Absent. Unless you consider the flicker of feet and
lips is animation.
Adlib seems to be the only standard supported, and it seems that
every game that only has adlib also has low quality, mellow, and
sysnthesized muZAC. Muzac, the shit that you hear in malls and
elevators. It was very monotonous and unmelodious. Sound effects
are almost absent.
It was hard to get a grasp of what the actual object of the game
was, as most of the characters and objects you work with usually
give a blatant "Can't be done" or "Go away". I still don't know
what the hell you're supposed to do.
A very poor choice of controls is given to the user, joystick
or keyboard, each choice is extruciatingly slow. Only five
choices of actions to choose from during the quest scenes
leaves the gameplay at a standstill. The arcade sequences are
even worse, they're not even fun and the control is awful.
Storyline? I don't know. I DO know that if you try to use the
birth certificate on the money, it'll say "Can't be done".
It seems these "Absolutely brilliant" Codemasters aren't so
brilliant. The game is poorly made, lacking many features and
generally - sucks.
It sucks. Don't get it.
