  33. Please read through the DirectX 6 section of this document. This section
  34. has information that is vital to successfully running Tomb Raider 3 on your
  35. system.
  36.  
  37. DirectX 6
  38.  
  39. Tomb Raider 3 is one of the first games to use Microsoft's DirectX 6. In
  40. order for you to play the game, you may need DX6-compliant drivers for your
  41. video card and sound card. Your video and sound card must be 100%
  42. compatible with DirectX. Please note that although DirectX 6.0 is installed
  43. with the game, your video and sound card drivers will not be upgraded to
  44. DirectX 6 drivers. You may need to obtain the latest DX6 drivers from your
  45. card manufacturer. If Tomb Raider 3 does not run properly on your video
  46. card, and there are no DX6 drivers available for your video card, you will
  47. have to run the game in software mode. Keep checking your manufacturer's
  48. web site for new drivers, they may correct problems you are experiencing,
  49. and may even help the game run faster on your system. There are various web
  50. sites listed in the Driver Information section of this document.
  51.  
  52. Signs indicating that you may need an updated driver:
  53. DirectDraw errors being displayed.
  54. Game crashes or hangs.
  55. Graphic glitches and other graphical problems appear during the game.
  56. Sound squeaking or crackling in game.
  57. Windows desktop is distorted or corrupted when exiting the game.

  63. Prepare Your Hard Drive
  64.  
  65. To best prepare your system to run the game, please follow this procedure:
  66. 1. Run ScanDisk on your hard drive. This program is found on your Windows
  67. Start Menu, in Programs/Accessories/System Tools.
  68. 2. Run Disk Defragmenter on your hard drive. This program is also found on
  69. your Windows Start Menu, in Programs/Accessories/System Tools.
  70. 3. Run a quality virus scanner on your hard drive.

  74. Installation
  75.  
  76. To install Tomb Raider 3 to your hard drive:
  77.  
  78. 1. Place the Tomb Raider 3 CD in your CD-ROM drive.
  79.  
  80. 2. After a few seconds, the Autorun Menu will come on screen. Select the
  81. Install option. If this menu does not appear, click the Start button,
  82. select Run and type D:\autorun (where D is the letter of your CD-ROM
  83. drive), then click OK.
  84.  
  85. 3. During the installation, the program will detect whether you have
  86. certified DirectX 6 drivers which allow Tomb Raider 3 to run properly under
  87. all configurations. Your current drivers may be updated as necessary.
  88.  
  89. 4. The Tomb Raider 3 installation routine will then install the game files
  90. to your hard drive. At the end of the installation, you may be prompted to
  91. Restart your computer.
  92.  
  93. 5. Upon completion of installation, run Setup to make sure your graphics
  94. card is configured properly.
  95.  
  96. 6. Click the Play button on the Autorun Menu or select Tomb Raider 3 in the
  97. Core Design folder on the Start Menu to begin the game.

  101. Setup
  102.  
  103. There are a large number of options available in the Setup window, which
  104. allow you to configure the graphics, sound and controls within the game.
  105. You may need to change some of the graphics settings to achieve the best
  106. possible performance (frame rate and detail level) on your particular
  107. graphics card. Please refer to the Technical Help section for more details
  108. on graphics configuration.
  109.  
  110. The Setup window is accessed by clicking the Setup button on the Autorun
  111. Menu, or by selecting Tomb Raider III - Setup from the Start menu.

  227. Joysticks & Gamepads

  229. Tomb Raider 3 supports a wide variety of Windows 95 compatible game
  230. controllers. However, there are no default settings for the joystick
  231. buttons, so you will need to assign the various controls to the joystick
  232. buttons yourself.
  233.  
  234. At the Main Title screen, highlight Controls (cursor keys icon) and press
  235. the Enter key. The Default Keys should now appear on screen. Press the
  236. right cursor key to bring up the User Keys screen. It is here that you will
  237. be able to assign the joystick buttons. Highlight the particular control
  238. you want to assign by using the cursor keys. Press the Enter key to select
  239. that control, and then press the joystick button you wish to use. The text
  240. will flash on and off if you have assigned two controls to the same button.
  241. Once you have assigned controls for all of the joystick buttons, press the
  242. ESC key to exit the Controls screen.

  246. Exit the Game
  247.  
  248. There is no hot key to exit Tomb Raider 3. To exit the game, you can press
  249. ALT-F4, or do the following:
  250. Press the ESC key, press down arrow, press the Enter key on the Passport
  251. (Game) icon, press right arrow twice (Exit to Title) and press the Enter
  252. key. Once you are at the Main Title Screen, Press Enter on the Passport
  253. (Game) icon and right arrow twice (Exit Game) and press the Enter key.

  257. Screen Grabber
  258.  
  259. Tomb Raider 3 has a built in screen grabber for your viewing pleasure.
  260. Hitting the " key during gameplay will snap a screenshot called
  261. TOMB0000.TGA and place it on your hard drive in the C:\Program Files\Core
  262. Design\Tomb Raider III (or wherever you installed the game). The files will
  263. be numbered incremently as you snap them. Please do not try and map this
  264. key to one of Lara's in-game controls.
  265.

  268. Uninstall Tomb Raider 3
  269.  
  270. In the unlikely event that you actually want to uninstall the game, there
  271. are 2 easy ways to do so:
  272. 1) Go to the Start Menu, Core Design/Tomb Raider 3 folder, and select
  273. Uninstall Tomb Raider 3.
  274. 2) Insert the TR3 CD, and then click on the Uninstall button on the Autorun
  275. menu.
  276.  
  277.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  278.  
  279. Technical Help
  280.  
  281. There are many 3D accelerator cards available on the market, and they all
  282. will perform differently under the same conditions, depending on the
  283. chipset, amount of video memory, and drivers installed. The key to getting
  284. the best performance out of your graphics card is to set the card to a
  285. higher resolution, while maintaining a good frame rate with no texture
  286. loss. Many accelerator cards will run Tomb Raider 3 very efficiently at
  287. 640x480, 16-bit color.
  288.  
  289. If you notice texture drop out or texture corruption - white blank spots or
  290. bad textures on menu text, objects, terrain and characters including Lara,
  291. you will need to lower the graphics resolution. The card has run out of
  292. texture memory. You will need to lower the graphics resolution to a setting
  293. where the texture corruption disappears. The graphics resolution can be
  294. changed in the setup window, and can also be changed in-game by selecting
  295. the Sunglasses Icon. Turning off Z-Buffering may help to fix this problem
  296. as well. If the results are unsatisfactory, you can run the game in
  297. software mode by running Setup, and selecting Software Mode.
  298.  
  299. If you are experiencing very low frame rates, you may want to lower the
  300. screen resolution. You can also reduce the screen size, which will leave a
  301. border around the viewable area. The "-" key on the keypad will reduce the
  302. screen size (while in-game), and the "+" key on the keypad will increase
  303. the screen size (while in-game). Reducing the resolution and screen size
  304. will help Tomb Raider 3 run faster.
  305.  
  306. When using the Sunglasses Icon in-game to increase the resolution, you will
  307. have to be a little careful. Some of the graphic options such as
  308. Z-Buffering can be supported at lower resolutions, but may not be supported
  309. at higher resolutions. If you increase the resolution in-game to a
  310. resolution which does not support the currently selected graphics options,
  311. the game may crash your system. For example, the 3Dfx Voodoo1 cards will
  312. not run the game with Z-Buffering on in 800x600 mode. If you have
  313. Z-Buffering on, and increase the resolution in-game to 800x600 the game
  314. will crash. If you wish to run the game in 800x600 mode on a 3Dfx Voodoo1
  315. card, make sure Z-Buffer is turned off.

  319. DirectX Installation
  320. If there are any problems installing DirectX 6 when the game is installed,
  321. DirectX can be installed directly from the CD. To install DirectX 6, go to
  322. the "DirectX" directory on the game CD, and run the "dxsetup.exe" program.
  323.  
  324. Sometimes DirectX will replace your audio or video drivers with drivers
  325. that do not work with your hardware. If you suspect DirectX has messed up
  326. your system, you should be able to restore the original drivers by going to
  327. the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS section in the Windows 95 CONTROL PANEL. This can
  328. be found on the Windows Start Menu, under Settings.
  329.  
  330. When you double click on the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon, you should see a
  331. list of all of the programs that are registered with Windows 95 in the
  332. Add/Remove Programs Properties panel. If you see a listing for "DirectX
  333. Drivers", double-click it to open the DirectX Setup window. At the bottom
  334. of this window, there should be a button labeled Restore Display Drivers.
  335. Clicking on this button should restore the original video drivers. Click on
  336. the Restore Audio Drivers button to restore the original audio drivers.
  337. Though DirectX will remain on your system, the restoration of the older
  338. drivers may then allow you to run the program. If not, you should probably
  339. contact your system vendor for 100% DirectX 6 compatible drivers for your
  340. video and/or sound cards OR visit the web site of your hardware
  341. manufacturer and download the latest drivers. There are various web sites
  342. listed in the Driver Information section of this document.

  350. 3D Graphic Cards
  351.  
  352. Tomb Raider requires that you have at LEAST 4 Mb of VRAM on your 3D card.
  353. We do not support any 2 Mb cards.
  354.  
  355. 3Dfx cards
  356. If you have a video card that uses the 3Dfx Voodoo1 or Voodoo2 chipset, and
  357. you are using older DX5 drivers, you may experience problems such as
  358. graphic glitches. Please visit your card manufacturer's web site to check
  359. if there are new DX6 drivers available for your card. Just in case your
  360. card manufacturer has not released DX6 drivers yet, we have provided 3Dfx
  361. reference drivers for Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 cards on the CD, in the Support
  362. directory.

  364. To install them, double-click on the executable file and follow the
  365. instructions. Please note that installing these reference drivers will
  366. deactivate any manufacturer-specific applets or control panels provided
  367. with your card. You will therefore want to visit your card manufacturer's
  368. web site to see if they have DX6-compliant drivers available, before
  369. installing the reference drivers we have provided on the CD.
  370.  
  371. S3 Virge VX/GX/DX & GX2
  372. You may be able to play Tomb Raider 3 on S3 Virge based cards in hardware,
  373. but Tomb Raider 3 is not supported on these cards. If you experience any
  374. problems running the game or viewing the FMV's on an S3 Virge card, we
  375. recommend you play in Software Mode.
  376.

  379. Audio Issues
  380.  
  381. If you find you are not hearing any sound within the game one of the
  382. reasons might be that when Windows 95 or Windows 98 was installed on your
  383. PC the ability to play the Microsoft Audio Compression files was not
  384. selected.
  385.  
  386. To check to see if this is the problem, please follow the following steps:
  387. [You will need your Windows 95/98 CD]
  388.  
  389. 1. Go into Control Panel and open the Add/Remove Programs applet.
  390. 2. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
  391. 3. You should see a selection item called Multimedia which will have one
  392. of the following 3 next to it:
  393. - A check in a white box
  394. - A check in a gray box
  395. - No check in the box
  396.  
  397. If you have the first of these, then this technique is not the solution to
  398. the problem. Please refer to other areas of the document or our on-line
  399. support.
  400.  
  401. If you have a check in a gray box, then please click on the Details button
  402. and place a check in the box next to the "Audio Compression" entry.
  403.  
  404. If there is no check in the box, then simply click in the box to check it.
  405.  
  406. Press OK to all the dialog boxes and Windows Setup will copy the necessary
  407. files to their hard drive.
  408.  
  409. There is also a driver issue with some sound cards and Microsoft's
  410. Compressed Audio Format. If you experience any 'skipping or stuttering
  411. audio' please try the following to clear up the problem:
  412.  
  413. 1. Exit out of the game and run the TOMB3 Setup Option from the Start Bar.
  414. 2. Look at the Sound Adapter Check Box.
  415. 3. Switch from Primary Sound Driver to the other available device (most
  416. likely Yamaha).
  417. 4. Click OK
  418.
