** Please select Word Wrap from the Edit menu **
** if you are viewing this file in Notepad **
This version of Dungeon Keeper supports 3D accelerator cards using the
Direct3D standard. To play Dungeon Keeper Direct3D, you will need a supported
graphics card (see list below), and the latest DirectX5 drivers ready
installed. You will also need the original Dungeon Keeper game.
This readme also applies to the Direct3D version of the Deeper Dungeons,
to play this you will need the Deeper Dungeons CD, and the Deeper Dungeons
Direct3D upgrade.
If you do not have a supported graphics card and DirectX5 you should play the
standard version of Dungeon Keeper.
Note to Dungeon Keeper Gold owners : the Dungeon Keeper Gold CD already
contains the Direct3D version and the Deeper Dungeons. You do not need this
upgrade.

2.0 Installation
================
First install Dungeon Keeper from CD, and the Deeper Dungeons data disc if you
own it. The instructions for this are in the Manual which came with the
original game.
Now download and run the program "DKD3D.EXE". This will launch the install
program for Dungeon Keeper Direct3D. Follow instructions on screen to
complete the installation.
If you wish to play the Deeper Dungeons Direct3D version, also download and
run the program "DDD3D.EXE". This will launch the install program for the
Deeper Dungeons Direct3D. Follow instructions on screen to complete the
installation.
NOTE: Dungeon Keeper and Deeper Dungeons require only DirectX version 3. For
the Direct3D version, the later DirectX version 5.0 or later is required. You
may already have DirectX5, since it often comes with recent computers, 3D
accelerator cards, recent games and magazine cover discs. If you do not have
DirectX5, Dungeon Keeper Direct3D will exit with an error when you start the
3D part of the game.
DirectX5 is available from Microsoft's website, www.microsoft.com. Try this
link :
====================
3.0 Running the game
====================
Click on the Start button from the Windows 95 taskbar and select
Programs->Bullfrog->Dungeon Keeper Direct3D->Dungeon Keeper
or
Programs->Bullfrog->Dungeon Keeper Direct3D->The Deeper Dungeons
or
Programs->Bullfrog->Dungeon Keeper Direct3D->The Direct3D Readme
Note that the Deeper Dungeons are only available to those who have purchased
and installed the Deeper Dungeons add on pack, and installed the Deeper
Dungeons Direct3D upgrade. These additional levels are also included with
Dungeon Keeper Gold.
====================
4.0 Trouble-Shooting
====================
Direct3D hardware acceleration is a very complex technology. We have tested
Dungeon Keeper Direct3D on many different graphics cards, and have proven it
to work on the cards listed in section 1.1 above, when using the latest
drivers.
It is most important that you use the latest available DirectX/Direct3D
drivers for your card. Even the drivers that come with your card may be out of
date and you should consider upgrading them. The newest drivers can usually be
found on your card manufacturer's website.
4.1 Troubleshooting Checklist
-----------------------------
If the game runs very slowly...
The speed and visual quality with which Dungeon Keeper Direct3D runs is very
dependent on both your 3D accelerator card and your processor speed. Even with
a very fast PC, a slow graphics card (or one with little memory) could make
the Direct3D version of the game run slowly. You should compare the standard
version of Dungeon Keeper to the Direct3D version - you may decide the
standard version works better on your machine.
If you get visual errors...
1. Check you have a supported card from the list above [1.1 Cards Supported].
If not, you can only run the standard version of Dungeon Keeper. If your card
is supported, your card manufacturer can provide you with recent, compatible
drivers. Contact them or see their website. If you have a recent 3D graphics
card which is not in either the "supported" or the "not supported" then you
should consult your card manufacturer to find if it is compatible.
2. Check you have installed DirectX5. If not see instructions for obtaining
DirectX in "2.0 Installation" above.
3. Check you have the very latest drivers installed. If in doubt, check with
your card supplier or look on their website. Even if you have bought your card
recently, it may have been supplied with old or buggy drivers. Some of the
popular cards included on the supported list ship with drivers which do not
work with Dungeon Keeper Direct3D.
4. Check you have: installed your 3D card and its drivers first, then
installed Dungeon Keeper, then installed the Direct3D version.
5. The Dungeon Keeper CD must be in the CDROM drive while you play Dungeon
Keeper Direct3D.
The Deeper Dungeons CD must be in the CDROM drive while you play Deeper
Dungeons Direct3D.
6. You must not disable hardware acceleration in the DirectX control panel, or
on the Display Properties menus
7. If you have multiple graphics cards in your machine, Dungeon Keeper
attempts to choose the best one. If the wrong one is selected, try double
clicking each of the setup files below :
SelectPrimaryDirect3DDevice.reg
OR SelectSecondaryDirect3DDevice.reg
OR SelectDefaultDirect3DDevice.reg to return to default behaviour.
This will force the correct card selection, then run the game. These files can
be found in the same directory you selected to install the KeepD3D.EXE
executable, which is by default "C:\Program Files\Bullfrog\Dungeon Keeper -
Direct3D".
4.2 Known problems with graphics cards
--------------------------------------
** If you have difficulty obtaining or installing the latest drivers, please
contact your graphics card supplier **
1. New Drivers: These can be obtained from your card manufacturer. The latest
drivers can usually be downloaded from their website.
Hints on installing new drivers:
You should use Explorer to look for a Readme.txt file (double click to read)
and follow the instructions to install new drivers. Otherwise, look for a file
called Install.exe, Install.bat, Setup.exe or Setup.bat and run that by double
clicking. Finally, if none of the above are found, some drivers ship with only
a .INF file. You should look for file name finishing with .INF, rightclick to
bring up a menu, and leftclick "Install" on that menu.
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
2. Matrox M3D graphics card owners: You need the very latest drivers, at least
version 4.1.1.5, to run Dungeon Keeper Direct3D correctly. These are available
from the Matrox website, "www.matrox.com". Try this address :
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
3. Videologic Apocalypse graphics card owners, using the NEC/Videologic
PowerVR(TM) PCX2 chipset: You need the very latest drivers, at least version
4.1.1, to run Dungeon Keeper Direct3D correctly. These are available from the
Videologic website "www.videologic.com". Try this address :
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
4. PCX2 chipset card owners : (including Videologic Apocalypse, Matrox M3D)
There is a known problem, during very busy scenes in possess creature mode, in
which the bottom of the screen flickers black squares for a small time. This
occurs even with recent drivers, and there is no known solution at this time.
This is a rare graphical glitch only, and does not effect the gameplay.
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
5. nVidia RIVA128 graphics card owners : You may experience some minor texture
errors at the edges of floor or ceiling tiles. To fix this, right click the
Desktop, left click Properties, and left click the RIVA128 tab. Now set the
"Automatically generate MIPMAP levels" box to 0.
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
6. Diamond Viper 330 owners: Also see the note to nVidia RIVA128 owners above
concerning MIPMAP levels. You will need the latest version of the drivers to
run Dungeon Keeper Direct3D. These are available from the Diamond Multimedia
website "www.diamondmm.com". Try the address:
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
7. 3Dfx Voodoo Card owners : (including Orchid Righteous, Diamond Monster3D,
...)
You are strongly recommended to use very recent drivers provided by your board
manufacturer if possible, particularly if you are running with a PentiumII
processor. There are several suppliers of 3Dfx Voodoo based graphics cards.
You should contact the correct one for your card. Some of the 3Dfx Voodoo card
manufacturers are :
- Diamond Multimedia - see "www.diamondmm.com" or try the address :
- Orchid - see "www.orchid.com" or try the address :
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
8. ATI Rage Pro owners :
You may experience graphical problems with driver versions before v4.35. If
so, you are advised to use the latest version of the drivers to run Dungeon
Keeper Direct3D. These are available from the ATI website "www.atitech.com" or
try the address :
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
9. 3Dfx Voodoo Rush (TM) chipset card owners :
There is a known problem, in which the frontend of the game sometimes appears
darkened. This occurs even with recent drivers, and there is no known solution
at this time. The frontend still functions correctly, and this does not effect
the graphics in the game or gameplay. There are several suppliers of 3Dfx
Voodoo Rush based graphics cards. You should contact the correct one for your
card. Some of the 3Dfx Voodoo Rush card manufacturers are :
- Intergraph - see "www.intergraph.com" or try the address :
- Hercules - see "www.hercules.com" or try the address :
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
10. 3Dfx Voodoo chipset card owners with Pentium Pro (TM) processors :
There is a known problem, only seen on PentiumPro machines, in which
horizontal lines of corruption occasionally occur in sprites, such as flames
around the Dungeon Heart, and dotted lines occasionally appear on the Dungeon
floor. This does not effect the gameplay at all. The problem occurs even with
recent drivers, and there is no known solution at this time.
** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics
card supplier **
11. 3DLabs Permedia2 chipset card owners : (including Diamond FireGL1000Pro)
If you have old drivers, you may experience minor graphical problems,
including a stippling effect on flames. The visual quality can be enhanced by
using most recently available drivers, giving you full "alpha support", which
is needed for high quality transparency effects. Recent drivers are available
from
- 3Dlabs - see "www.3dlabs.com" or try the address :
4.3 Note: Multiplayer Games
-------------------------
Please note that when you use the Direct3D version, you will only be able to
play a multiplayer game against someone who is also using the Direct3D
version. If your opponent is running Dungeon Keeper normally, then you will
not be able to play them. In this circumstance, both of you will have to play
a multiplayer game using the normal version of Dungeon Keeper.
