  50. 1: BC3K SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  75. 2: INSTALLATION
  76.

  79. 1. After downloading all 10 files, run the MAKEBC3K.BAT which will build the
  80.    BC3KD7C.ZIP file. The final file size should be 51,659,497 bytes.
  81.    
  82.    Verify that the zip file is ok BEFORE deleting the 10 files! Also, the
  83.    building the files into one file requires that the files be in order on
  84.    your hard drive. If they are not because you downloaded them in a different
  85.    order, you need to copy them all to another directory.
  86.  
  87. 2. Once you have the zip file, create a sub-directory and unzip the file using 
  88.    -d option for Pkzip otherwise the sub-directories will NOT be created. If
  89.    you are using a WIN95 unzip utility, be sure you set it to extract with the
  90.    folders intact! You will NEED at LEAST 120 MB to install this software.
  91.    Unzip this file into the same directory as well so that you have all files
  92.    in the same directory. The BC3K.BAT file included in this file is required
  93.    to run the game.

  98.    1. IF YOU USE A WIN95 ZIP UTILITY SUCH AS WINZIP, YOU MUST ENSURE THAT THE
  99.       EMPTY DIRECTORIES/FOLDERS ARE CREATED. IF NOT, YOU WILL HAVE TO CREATE
  100.       THEM MANUALLY. THEY ARE PICS, SAVE & SCRIPTS. SIMPLY CREATE THEM IN THE
  101.       INSTALL DIRECTORY ONCE YOU'VE UNZIPPED THE PROGRAM
  102.    
  103.    2. DO NOT USE LONGFILENAMES IN THE DIRECTORY NAME OR THE SYSTEM WILL
  104.       NOT RECOGNIZE IT.

  108. 3. Once you have unzipped the file, run SETUP.EXE and configure your sound card. If
  109.    you are running under WIN95, you may crash your computer if you choose the
  110.    auto-detect method. Be warned.
  111.  
  112. 4. Next, using a text editor such as Notepad or Wordpad, edit the BC3000AD.INI 
  113.    file and change the 'cd-rom=' and 'home=' parameters to match your install
  114.    environment. For instance if you installed the game on your D: drive in the
  115.    D:\BC3K sub-directory, you would change the lines to read as follows.

  117.    cdrom=D
  118.    home=D:\BC3K
  119.  
  120.    ! There is no : (colon) after the drive letter on the cd-rom= line above
  121.    ! Do NOT use your actual cd-rom letter unless you have a cd-rom in the drive
  122.    ! Do NOT modify any other lines 
  123.    ! You MUST save the file in ascii text format

  125. 5. Once you've configured your sound card, you can start the game by either
  126.    running the BC3K.BAT file or typing BC3000AD /d1 /n . Those two switches 
  127.    disable playback of the 50MB intro (not included) and cd-rom check. Later, 
  128.    if you are going to be using any other switches, i.e, for video settings 
  129.    (see below), you should add them to this file or on the commandline.
  130.    
  131.    A DEBUG.TXT file will be created and can get quite large.  Remember to delete
  132.    it every now and then before starting the game.
  133.  
  134. 6. Once the games starts, immediately go to CONFIG from the MAIN MENU and
  135.    change any options you'd like. Read the manual BEFORE making any changes to 
  136.    the system. Most of all, do NOT enable the intro sequence or the game will
  137.    crash!

  141. 3: VIDEO PROBLEMS
  142.

  145. 1. If after you install the game you get a General Protection Fault or a
  146.    corrupted screen when it starts, you may have to configure BC3K to use your 
  147.    specific video card.
  148.  
  149.    Type BC3000AD /v? from your install directory to see the list of cards that
  150.    BC3K supports in their native mode. If you card is not listed, you MUST 
  151.    locate and use a VESA driver. You can download SCI-TECH Display Doctor from 
  152.    www.scitechsoft.com. Some of the new cards entering the market have built
  153.    in VESA 2.0 or 3.0 support so you may be able to run the VESA mode without
  154.    need for an external VESA driver. 
  155.  
  156.    If your card IS supported, start BC3K using the card's profile number by
  157.    typing, BC3000AD /d1 /n /vn
  158.  
  159.    Where n is the number of your graphics card returned by /v?. For example, if
  160.    your card uses the S3 chipset, you would type, BC3000AD /n /d1 /v21
  161.  
  162. 2. If your card is not supported in it's native mode, i.e, not listed when the
  163.    /v? parameter is used, then you have to use VESA mode. Load the VESA driver
  164.    for your card and then type BC3000AD /v1 to run in VESA mode. If your card
  165.    has built in VESA support, you do NOT need to install VESA driver.
  166.  
  167. 3. You MUST add this parameter to the BC3K.BAT file if you end up using it.
  168.  
  169.    NOTE: BC3K will try to auto-detect your graphics card and will revert to
  170.          VESA mode in most cases but considering the advances in graphics
  171.          cards, it may fail on new cards. So, use the method described above.
  172.          The performance using the cards native support is faster than VESA
  173.          mode depending on the type of VESA support that the card has.
  174.

  177. 4: MANUAL AND DOCUMENTATION
  178.

  181. The manual (BC3KMAN.PDF), keyboard commands (KEYBOARD.PDF) and a host of manual
  182. apppendix are located in the DOCS sub-directory. There is also a game FAQ called
  183. BC3KFAQ.PDF which you can read to get you started. An extensive walkthru is in
  184. the works, so keep checking the GNN area of the website for news. If you have
  185. any problems, post them on the COMMLINK section of the website.

  187. You will need to download and install the Adobe Acrobat v3.01 also available at 
  188. the 3000AD web site or from Adobe (www.adobe.com). Direct access to the cargo 
  189. bay is at www.bc3000ad.com/cargo/cargobay_contents.html

  191. Once you've downloaded and installed the Acrobat reader, run it and use it to
  192. load the files in the DOCS directory. It also allows you to print them.

  194. Before you even think about printing the manual, be aware, it's 194 pages!

  198. 5: RUNNING UNDER WINDOWS 95
  199.

  202. Though BC3K is not supported under Windows 95 except in MS-DOS mode, some have
  203. been able to get it to run by creating a desktop shortcut using the following
  204. settings. You will also notice the mouse leaving trails on the screen. This is
  205. not a BC3K problem but a problem with running this DOS program under WIN95.
  206.  
  207. Refer to your Windows 95 manual for details on how to create a shortcut.
  208.  
  209. Create the shortcut on your desktop. Make sure the command line and working
  210. directory BOTH point to the BC3K install directory. Point the commandline to
  211. the BC3K.BAT file in the BC3K runtime directory.
  212.  
  213. An icon file called BC3K.ICO is provided.
  214.  
  215. Once you've created the shortcut, open it up and make the following changes
  216. to it's settings.
  217.  
  218.   Note: ON  = tick mark
  219.         OFF = no tick mark
  220.  
  221. Program - close on exit              = ON
  222.  
  223.           If you decide to run in MS-DOS mode if running from Win95 using this
  224.           shortcut doesn't work, then you can configure MS-DOS mode by
  225.           clicking on the 'advanced' tab.
