  12. 2.0  INTRODUCTION

  14. This diskette contains Video Drivers for onboard S3* ViRGE DX/GX* and ViRGE* 
  15. video solution hardware.

  18. 3.0 VIDEO DRIVER INSTALLATION
  19. -----------------------------
  20. ╖ From the Start menu, select Settings then select Control Panel.
  21. ╖ Select the Display icon, then Settings tab, then Display Type button. This will call the   Display Type dialog window.
  22. ╖ Select Change in the right of the Adapter Type area. Select Have Disk.
  23. ╖ Place the display driver diskette in drive A: and select OK.
  24. ╖ This will call the Install from Disk screen. Select Browse and Open after the S3.inf file is   highlighted. Select OK to continue.
  25. ╖ The Change Display dialog box will appear.  Highlight the desired controller and select OK.
  26. ╖ The Third Party Drivers dialog box will appear. Select Yes to continue installation.
  27. ╖ The Installing Driver dialog box will appear and driver files will now be copied to your hard   disk. Select OK to continue.
  28. ╖ Select Close to exit the Display Type dialog box.
  29. ╖ Select Close to exit the Display Properties dialog box.
  30. ╖ Remove diskette from floppy drive.
  31. ╖ Select Yes to reboot your system from the System Setting Change dialog box.
  32. ╖ After the system has restarted, you can change resolution by selecting the Display icon from   your Control Panel.

  34. NOTE:  If installing WindowsNT 4.00 with the S3 device currently installed
  35.        in the system:
  36.  
  37.     Proceed through the Windows NT installation as normal.  The installation
  38.     program will prompt the user to choose a display mode.  Choose the
  39.     "Cancel" button from the "Display Settings" screen to ignore this step
  40.     for now.  The installation will now finish.  Once Windows NT has started
  41.     for the first time, proceed to follow the steps outlined above to install
  42.     the driver for your S3 device.

  45. 4.0  KNOWN ISSUES
  46. -----------------

  48. ╖ The following issues have been reported against Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 build 1381 or the Windows NT 4.0 HCT tests. These issues are not specific to S3 controllers and are documented here for convenience, since the issues have the appearance of being video driver problems.
  49. In ALL modes, moving an application window around the desktop, will cause the active window  to be redrawn incorrectly.  The active window will even capture parts of the background (desktop or other windows).  This problem is most evident  when the application is "MS Power Point" and the Desktop Properties window with the Screen Saver tab open to an "OpenGL 3D screen saver" is the underlying window.

  51. ╖ Ghost images appear along the animation area of the file transfer status window, when a large   file is being copied by dragging the folder across the animation at 640x480x8bpp.
  52. ╖ Changing color depth on the fly to 8bpp from any higher color depth will cause slight     discoloration on the "Start" button and the buttons in the upper right corner.  Folders are     now light gray instead of manila.  Other discoloration will include the upside-down triangles   on menu bars.
  53. ╖ Ctrl+Alt+Del will change from the current resolution to the resolution under which the driver   was installed. The drivers appears to be using the "Last Known Good Configuration instead of   VGA mode.
  54. ╖ Playing an AVI in any high color depth  greater than 8 bpp and then mode switching to an 8bpp   mode will cause the AVI to play in 4bpp.

  56. ╖ Playing windowed AVI while selecting any 3D OpenGL Screen Savers from the Display     Properties/Screen Saver tab sheet, will cause the Icons and other areas or intense screen     graphics to flicker in unison.
  57. ╖ With WinNT256 as the desktop wallpaper selecting any 3D OpenGL Screen Saver from the Display    Properties/Screen Saver tab sheet will corrupt the palette of the background wallpaper.
  58. ╖ Microsoft NT 4.0 HCT will report a FAIL when there is no actual video failure on the following   tests. These issues have been reported to MS and they have verified that the FAILs are not     accurate.
  59. ╖ "OpenGL Conformance Certification" HCT test will report a FAIL for all modes.
  60. ╖ "GDI Man" HCT test will report a FAIL in the higher display modes, ie 1280x1024 and 1600x1200.  
  61. ╖ "Video: Win Fonts/Text" will report a FAIL in all 16 bpp modes.

  63. - MPEG video corruption occurs when switching between two MPEG frames at resolutions and color depths of 640x480x8bpp and 1027x768x8bpp.
