- Product Files
- =============
- The following files are decompressed into the \3DSMAX main directory by default :
-
- drivers\README.TXT This file
- drivers\MGAMIL.HDI HEIDI driver
- scenes\MATROX.MAX A Matrox 3D Studio Max sample file
-
- Installation & Configuration
- ============================
- 1) If you haven't already done so, install Windows NT 4.0.
- 2) If you haven't already done so, install 3D Studio MAX version 1.2. Previous
- versions will also run, however, v1.2 was intended for NT4.0.
- 3) Install the Matrox NT display driver revision 3.00 or higher and reboot.
- 4) From the instalation floppy, start the setup program and follow the instructions.
- 5) Choosing the MGAMILL.HDI driver in 3D Studio Max:
- - Start 3DSMAX
- - Go to menu "FILE/PREFERENCES"
- - Click on the VIEWPORTS tab
- - Click on the CHOOSE DRIVER button
- - In the CUSTOM DRIVER list, choose MGAMIL.HDI
- - Restart 3DS MAX for preferences to take effect
- 6) You are now ready to run 3D Studio Max with MGA acceleration ... good luck.
-
- Important Notes
- ===============
- 1) This driver does not work with NT3.51 ... only NT4.0.
- 2) The Double Buffer and Z buffer switches in the MGA Settings Advanced property
- sheet must be enabled to enable hardware acceleration of this driver.
- 3) This driver provides hardware acceleration for flat shaded, gouraud shaded, and
- z-buffered scenes. Accelerated texture mapping for Mystique will be added in a
- subsequent release.
- 4) Only true-color pixel depths of 15bpp, 16bpp and 32bpp are supported. 8bpp will
- result in strange colors to appear and will make using 3D Studio Max very
- difficult. We recommend using one of the other supported pixel depths.
- 5) Texture mapping and alpha blending are supported through software emulation.
- This is also true for Mystique even though the hardware supports texture mapping.
- This will be added in a future release.
- 6) Since video memory can be dynamically allocated by any DirectDraw application,
- we cannot guarantee for which resolutions we will run with with hw acceleration.
- Appropriate MGA Warning messages are issued if insufficient memory conditions
- and we will revert to software emulation code for graphic operations in such a
- case.
- If no other application has allocated video memory, the following resolutions
- are supported with hardware acceleration :
-
- +-------------+--------------------+--------------------+
- | Pixel depth | 15/16 bpp | 32 bpp |
- +-------------+------+------+------+------+------+------+
- | Onboard Mem | 2 Mb | 4 Mb | 8 Mb | 2 Mb | 4 Mb | 8 Mb |
- +-------------+------+------+------+------+------+------+
- | 640x480 | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | Yes | Yes |
- | 800x600 | No | Yes | Yes | No | No | Yes |
- | 1024x768 | No | No | Yes | No | No | Yes |
- | 1152x882 | No | No | Yes | No | No | No |
- | 1280x1024 | No | No | Yes | No | No | No |
- +-------------+------+------+------+------+------+------+
- Yes : Double buffered with Z supported
- No : Not supported
-
- 7) Changing the display property settings (resolution or pixel depth) is not
- handled well by 3DSMax. We beleive this problem is not particular to our driver.
- We recommend that you quit 3DSMax before modifying your display and restart it
- after the display changes have taken place.

- First official release.

- KNOWN LIMITATIONS
- =================
- Some of the following limitations may be common to all 3D Studio Max hardware
- accelerated drivers, but we are listing them for the sake of being thorough :
-
- 1) Opening a DOS full screen window will cause corruption and possibly crash the
- system when trying to return to 3DSMax.
- 2) OpenGL screen savers will cause screen corruption when returning to 3D Studio
- Max. Redraw all viewports to correct this.
- 3) 3D Studio Max may crash or stop without warning when the display driver is in
- 32 bpp (true color) and in a supported resolution (like 1024x768 on an 8 Mb
- board) and there is another Direct Draw application using offscreen.
- In this case, close any Direct Draw application using offscreen before running
- 3D Studio Max.
- 4) We have noticed on certain system configurations that perpective views do
- not correctly display wireframe drawings. You can workaround this by right
- clicking on the viewport label to bring up a pop-up menu. Choose
- "Configure..." and change the "Rendering Level" to "Smooth", and "Apply to"
- "All Viewports" and close the menu. Then reopen it and switch the
- "Rendering Level" back to "Wireframe". This will correct the problem for
- the rest of your session.
- 5) When quiting 3D Studio Max v1.1 a dialog box will open with title
- "SMARTHEAP LIBRARY". Just click the CANCEL button. This is fixed with v1.2
- of 3D Studio Max.
