"After 6000 years of peace the beautiful world of Ancardia is once more
threatened by the forces of Chaos. Dark and sinister beings emerge from
a huge dungeon complex hidden in a remote mountain range known as the
Drakalor Chain. They plunder, burn and kill everything they encounter and
pose a serious threat to all life on Ancardia. The famous sage Khelavaster
finally managed to locate the dungeon complex which seems to be the origin
of all evil. Scores of adventurers travel to those ancient and mysterious
dungeons to face whatever might be lurking in the vast depths of the
complex."
Now it's your turn. You, being a young adventurer looking for fame
and fortune, have started on a quest to save your world.
This document will try to answer some of the most pressing questions about
the game called ADOM (shortcut for 'Ancient Dungeons Of Mystery').

--------
A. What is ADOM?
----------------
ADOM is a so-called rogue-like game. This means that it is a single-user
game which allows you to play the role of an intrepid adventurer exploring
a large dungeon with some specific goal in mind. The graphics in the game
are based on simple text characters and the game is controlled with a
large number of keyboard commands.
B. What systems are supported?
------------------------------
ADOM is available for several systems. As of the current version
mostly INTEL-x86-based CPUs are supported, but a port to the Amiga
also is available. To be able play ADOM you need to have a 386, 486
or Pentium CPU and at least 2MB of RAM installed. ADOM is known to
work with MS-DOS, Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT and Linux. It also
should work with DR-DOS and PC-DOS (if you discover the contrary
please let me know). The Amiga version requires a fast Amiga computer
(preferrably an Amiga 3000 or upwards) and at least 2MB of RAM and a
hard disk for the actual installation.
C. Where can I find it?
-----------------------
If you enjoy web-surfing you might want to point your web browser at
http://users.aol.com/ADOMDev/index.html
Currently there are several FTP-/Websites where you can retrieve the files
required to play ADOM:
* The new official ADOM FTP site at
ftp://crescent.dartmouth.edu/adom
* If you experience problems with your connect to the address or the download
speed you also can try the following URLs:
http://user.holli.com/~dludwig/adom.html
(Thanks to Derek Ludwig for providing the space for
the ADOM binaries and creating a web page for ADOM)
and
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homespages/lrc/homepage.htm
(Thanks to Lews R. Cunningham for providing the
space and creating another web page for ADOM)
* The Roguelike Games FTP site at ftp.win.tue.nl. You will find ADOM in
the directory /pub/games/adom. This might be a good choice for
europeans, although this site neither contains the alpha binaries and
at times is a little slow on providing the latest version of ADOM.
Thanks to Boudewijn Wayers for providing and administrating this FTP
site.
D. What do I need to play?
--------------------------
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have used an older version of ADOM than the one
you are downloading, download the file adom-update.doc (or simply
update.doc if you have logged in at members.aol.com) first and read
it. It contains important notes about changes between versions. If
you encounter problems, which could be solved by reading that file, I
won't answer your questions (even if I receive your email or see your
posting in a relevant newsgroup) since I have only so much time
available.
If you want to play ADOM on a DOS- or Windows-based system you will need
the following two files:
adom-xyz.zip
adom-dos.txt
If you want to play ADOM on a Linux system you will need the following two
files:
adom-xyz-elf.tar.gz
adom-linux.txt
The Linux version was compiled under Linux 1.1.62, but should work on
all systems able to execute programs in a.out format.
The xyz should be replaced by the most recent version number of ADOM
(e.g. 080). Alternatively you can download 'adom-xyz-aout.tar.gz' for
the a.out distribution.
E. How much do I have to pay for ADOM?
--------------------------------------
Nothing. ADOM is a game available for free. Feel free to copy it and
to distribute it as long as you honor the conditions explained in the
file 'license.doc' contained in the package for your system. If you
want to say thanks to the author for creating the game, please send a
postcard to the address listed below from wherever you are living:

F. What can I do to further the development of new versions of ADOM?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
There is an institution called 'World Charts Download Top 100 Games'
available on Internet which lists the favorite games of netizens all
over the game. You can vote for ADOM on this chart (at the point of
this being written ADOM holds place #40 on that list). The further
ADOM advances to the top the more I am encouraged to add even more
nifty and exciting features to the game (if people like my game my
work has a meaning and this greatly boosts my enthusiasm). To vote
you just need to visit the following WWW page and follow the links at
that place:
http://www.tiac.net/users/top100/gdl.html
G. Is there any support available?
----------------------------------
Partially. If you have Usenet access try to look into the newsgroup
rec.games.roguelike.misc, where you might find help. If you have
access to EMail you also can try to ask questions to
rpg@saranxis.ruhr.de (that's me), although I can't guarantee to have
the time to answer them. New ideas for the game should also be sent
to that address.
If you like to play with your WEB browser you also could check out the
following two URLs:
http://users.aol.com/ADOMDev/index.html
and
http://www.win.tue.nl/games/roguelike/adom/index.html
H. Where can I find the sources for ADOM?
-----------------------------------------
Currently nowhere. Right now I do not feel like distributing the
sources. The sources will be released after the completion of ADOM
1.0.0, although they will include a license which forbids everything
but private, non-commercial usage of the sources. There won't be any
distribution of modified sources and derived games. Sorry.
