4. Story:
Ranax. The Andromeda Galaxy. A planet where peace has reigned for centuries
among its humanoid population. But now, hundreds of years of peace have
exploded into a battle for the planetÆs very survival.
Ranax has been invaded by the evil Maaron empire and the Ranaxian people
have been subjugated through a sophisticated mind control process. By
broadcasting hypnotic soundwaves from an orbiting satellite, the Maarons
have turned the planetÆs inhabitants into a race of mindless slaves.
You are a member of the last remaining band of Ranaxian rebels, somehow
immune from the satelliteÆs hypnotic effects. You have infiltrated the
Maaron Central Command Bunker and stolen the digital code which will
permanently shut down the satellite. YouÆve managed to get in, now youÆve
got to find a way out.
The Maarons have discovered your operation and quickly surrounded your
group, cutting off your escape route and scattering your team. Now you
alone must fight your way through an unending army of alien monsters and
robot warriors, and carry the vital information back to your generals. Get
ready to target, then run for your life, as the fate of the planet is in
your hands.
5. Characters
Tamir
You are this legendary Ranaxian rebel, trying to liberate the
secret code which will free Ranax from the Maaron grip.
Maaron Grunt
Servile creatures used by the Maaron Grunt Masters for carrying
cargo and other menial tasks, but capable of doing a lot of damage to your
life energy.
Maaron Grunt Master
These deadly overseers use electronic devices to maintain their
control over the Maaron grunts. Steer clear of these beasts, they pack a
mean wallop!
Death Lotus
Watch out! This deadly indigenous plant has a belly of fire.
Spiders
Mutant arachnids, looking to feed on you. The only way to stop
them is to blast them.
Xedex
A huge flying creature, Xedex is at one moment an enemy, the next
an ally. As a result, Xedex is extremely unpredictable, so approach with
caution.
Iron Hedgehogs
A deceptively deadly animal that can roll itself into a ball, and
take you out with devastating efficiency.
Gore worms
These worm-like animals are slow moving, but deadly. Watch out for
their iron spikes, or theyÆll cause major damage to your life force.
Ayurian Guards
Guardians of the Sacred Hills of Ayur, these robot warriors strike
quickly and accurately, so keep your distance.
The Darvan
These creatures were introduced to Ranax by the Maarons. While
traditionally used for cargo and transport duties, they also make excellent
watchdogs.
Psedragon
A merciless flying beast whoÆs constantly on the prowl for a quick
snack.
Venon
A huge crab-like creature, heÆs fast and deadly. If it runs at you,
get out of the way!
6. Troubleshooting
Low Memory
Rebel Runner requires at least 530 KB of conventional memory to run.
Remove any TSRs from CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT that are not required
for the game (you need to keep memory, CD-ROM drive, hard drive and sound
card drivers). If you have MS DOS 6.0 or higher, try using MEMMAKER to
optimise memory.
1) type "edit config.sys" and press enter
2) look for any lines beginning with "device=" and rem them if they are
not needed.
e.g. if you have device=c:\dos\ansi.sys
change it to read rem device=c:\dos\ansi.sys
3) add the following line at the top of the file if you donÆt have it
dos=high,umb
4) move TSRÆs high
e.g. if you have device=c:\dos\ansi.sys
change it to read devicehigh=c:\dos\ansi.sys
No sound
If you donÆt have a Soundblaster compatible card installed, you wonÆt be
able to play the game with sound (the game will still work without sound).
If it fails to make any sound even if you have the above sound card, run
the setup program and set the IRQ or address of the Soundblaster card. If
you donÆt know the numbers, check your AUTOEXEC.BAT for a line like the
following:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P300 T6
The numbers you need are the ones after the A and I (e.g. 220 and the
first 5, respectively). If the AUTOEXEC.BAT file doesnÆt contain the
above line, look at the CONFIG.SYS file for the line that loads the
sound card driver (check your sound card manual) and use the numbers
from it.
Not enough XMS
1) if you have the following line
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe ... (where ... are commands like
'ram')
copy the line and change it to
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe
(rem out the original line)
2) if you are running under Win 3.1 or Win 95, change the DOS properties
as follows
Win 3.1:
1. run pifedit.exe (either via file manager in c:\windows or using the
icon in the main program group)
2. open the file c:\windows\dosprompt.pif
3. change the minimum Extended Memory to 2048 and the maximum to at
least 4096
4. save the file
Win 95
1. use explorer and select the file iron.exe in the c:\game\iron directory
2. either press Alt-Enter or right mouse click on the file and select
properties
3. click on the memory tab
4. in the Extended total box, select either auto or 2048 or higher
5. click on OK
No XMS
1. type "edit config.sys" and press enter
2. look for the following lines and add them, in order shown, if they are
not present
device=c:\dos\himem.sys
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe
Note: If you are running Win 95, you may need to change the directory name
from c:\dos to either c:\windows or c:\windows\command
