INSTALLING IMAGINE 128 SERIES 2 HAWKEYE FOR WINDOWS 95 DRIVER AND UTILITIES

NOTE: Before installing the Number Nine drivers, please
close all open application programs and disable any
anti-virus software that is running on your computer until
the HawkEye for Windows 95 installation is complete!!!
Installing the Imagine 128 Series 2 software is a one step procedure.
Simply run the file 'SETUP.EXE' to install both the Windows 95 drivers
and the HawkEye 95 feature set.
PRELIMINARY: If you have downloaded the driver from our BBS, World Wide Web
home page, or FTP site:
Do NOT store these files in a DIRECTORY called C:\NUMBER9 as it will
create a conflict with the configuration FILE of the same name!!!
STEP 1: SETUP.EXE will perform the HawkEye for Windows 95 installation
for you.
Specify the path to the new driver using one of the examples below:
Example 1: From diskette:
- Start Windows 95
- Insert the HawkEye for Windows 95 Diskette
into your floppy drive.
- Click on the Windows 95 'Start' button.
- Select Run...
- Type A:\SETUP (if A: is your floppy drive)
- Press Enter
Example 2: From your CD-ROM, hard drive, or network drive:
- Start Windows 95
- Click on the Windows 95 'Start' button.
- Select Run...
- If you are installing from an Imagine 128 Series 2
CD-ROM, the SETUP program is located in the WIN95
directory.
- Type D:\WIN95\SETUP (if D: is your CD-ROM)
- If you are installing from your local hard drive
or a network drive, type the full path to the
directory where you copied the Imagine 128 Series 2
HawkEye for Windows 95 driver files.
- Run 'SETUP.EXE'
Example 3: If you're not sure exactly where the drivers are:
- Start Windows 95
- Click on the Windows 95 'Start' button.
- Select Run...
- Choose the "Browse..." button to find them.
- Run Imagine 128 Series 2 'SETUP.EXE'
When prompted, you must restart Windows 95 to complete the
installation of your new HawkEye for Windows 95 features.

HAWKEYE FOR WINDOWS 95 OPTIONS PAGE
------------------------------------------------------------------
HawkEye 95 now includes an Options page, that allows easy user configuation
of some of the HawkEye 95 / Display Driver parameters.
The Options page items available with this release are:
Report Missing Board:
With Report Missing Board enabled, attempting to run HawkEye 95 will cause
an error message to be displayed if the Imagine 128 Series 2 board has been
removed from the system and replaced by another type of video card.
If Report Missing Board is disabled, HawkEye 95 will not start if the
Imagine 128 Series 2 board is no longer in the system.
Safe Mode Support:
When the Safe Mode Support Option is enabled, HawkEye will be available when
Windows 95 is running in Safe Mode. Since the Imagine 128 Series 2 display
driver is not being used in Safe Mode, only the Information, Status, and
Options pages will be available.
If the Safe Mode Support Option is disabled, HawkEye will not start when
Windows 95 is running in Safe Mode.
Caching Options:
Device Bitmap and Font Caching improve the graphics performance of the
Imagine 128 Series 2 graphics controller. Both of these Options should be
enabled for maximum graphics acceleration.
NOTE: Changing these settings requires a Windows restart before the new
settings will be activated.
Device Bitmap Caching accelerates graphics performance by storing commonly
used graphics objects in a rapidly accessible memory area.
Font Caching accelerates text performance.
If you are experiencing minor graphics corruption in a specific application,
you may be able to resolve the problem by disabling one or both of the
Caching Options. See item #16 in the Troubleshooting section for additional
information.

RESOLVING ISSUES WITH YOUR NUMBER NINE BOARD
------------------------------------------------------------------
The Number Nine Web Site at http://www.nine.com/ contains extensive
technical information about your new Number Nine board, including FAQs
(frequently asked questions). The Technical Support pages on the Web
site can be found at http://www.nine.com// These include our newest
drivers for download from our FTP server, FAQs (Frequently asked
questions & solutions), and Windows 95 information. The FAQs, as
well as the Troubleshooting section in this README, will answer most
of your technical support questions.
If you are experiencing a problem and wish to determine whether or
not it is related to your Number Nine board, Windows 95 allows the
user to incrementally decrease the video acceleration. In doing so you
can determine whether or not it is the display driver that is causing
the problem.
To lower the acceleration:
- Click on the Windows 95 'Start' button.
- Select 'Settings' and then 'Control Panel'.
- Double click on the 'System' icon.
- Click on the 'Performance' tab, then on the 'Graphics' button.
- Move the acceleration slider to 'None' then click on OK.
- Click on OK again.
- You will then be prompted to restart your computer.
- Click 'yes'.
NOTE!: MOST HAWKEYE FOR WINDOWS 95 FEATURES WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE
WITH ACCELERATION SET TO NONE!!
The functionality of HawkEye for Windows 95 is affected by the video
accelerator slider position as follows:
---+ (Full) all accelerator functions - full HawkEye support
--+- most accelerator functions - Partial HawkEye support
(No Chameleon Cursor)
-+-- basic accelerator functions - minimal HawkEye support
+--- (None) no accelerator functions - minimal HawkEye support
If the problem still occurs in an unaccelerated mode, then the problem
is most likely being caused by Windows 95 or other hardware/software
and not by the HawkEye for Windows 95 driver.
If the problem does not occur, reset the video acceleration to full
and restart Windows 95. Refer to item #16 in the TroubleShooting section
below for additional information on resolving graphics corruption problems.
If a problem is application specific, please provide the application name,
vendor information, and application version in any fax or e-mail to Number
Nine. Please include all of the information available on the Status page in
the HawkEye Control Panel regarding the version and configuration of your
card and display driver.

SOFTWARE UPGRADES
------------------------------------------------------------------
Even though you may have just received your Number Nine software,
newer versions may be available. Free upgrades are provided to
all Number Nine customers on the Number Nine Bulletin Board
System (BBS), World Wide Web home page and FTP site.
To see if you have the latest version, compare the version number
of your software (on the label of the provided diskette or in
Status in the HawkEye for Windows 95 Control Panel under Windows
Disk Version) with the version number of the corresponding software
on the BBS, Compuserve, World Wide Web home page or FTP site.

The BBS has a separate file area for each Number Nine product.
The latest driver updates can be found in each product's file
area, and files of general interest (shareware, etc.) can be
found in the General library. An E-mail system is available
for technical questions about Number Nine products or about
the BBS in general. A complete listing of available files can
be downloaded by invoking the "Download List of Files" command
from any file library menu.
On the US BBS, RIP graphics are supported, and a RIP compatible
terminal program is available in the General library
(RIPTM154.ZIP).
Many files are self-extracting, but some files will require the
latest version of PKUNZIP to decompress. PKUNZIP is available
in the General library (filename PKZ204G.EXE), and can also be
found on most on-line services such as CompuServe and America
Online.

WORLD GROUP MANAGER (WGM)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Number Nine's BBS now supports the Worldgroup Windows-based BBS client.
Worldgroup Manager is a program which connects you to any on-line
service running Worldgroup server software. You can download the
client software from the General Library on our BBS.

INTERNET
------------------------------------------------------------------
Number Nine now has an FTP site. All current Number Nine
Drivers are available to anyone with access to the Internet.
Our FTP Address is: ftp.nine.com.
Number Nine also has a World Wide Web server at: http://www.nine.com.
Information about Number Nine products as well as our FTP site can
now be accessed at our World Wide Web site.

DIRECTDRAW, DIRECTVIDEO AND DIRECT3D FOR WINDOWS 95 (DirectX)
------------------------------------------------------------------
DCI support is now incorporated into 'DirectDraw' for Windows 95.
There is a DirectX directory on the Imagine 128 Series 2 CD-ROM in
which you will find the files necessary to install DirectDraw,
DirectVideo and Direct3D on your system (Setup.exe).

TROUBLESHOOTING HAWKEYE FOR WINDOWS 95 DRIVER AND UTILITIES
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1. HawkEye for Windows 3.1 will not run on a new or upgraded
Windows 95 configuration.
Resolution:
HawkEye for Windows 3.1 is not intended to be run on Windows 95.
You need to upgrade to HawkEye for Windows 95.
* * *
2. You are attempting to install Windows 95 for the first time
or on a clean hard drive (with the Imagine 128 Series 2 in the system)
but the Imagine drivers don't appear to be working properly, you
are stuck in Safe-Mode.
Resolution:
The current release of Windows 95 has an anomaly that could cause
a failure in the Imagine 128 Series 2 HawkEye 95 setup program. The
failure exhibits itself as an inability to get out of Win95 Safe Mode
after having performed a "clean" installation of Windows 95 on a
freshly formatted hard drive with the Imagine 128 Series 2 card
installed.
The problem is caused by the Windows 95 AutoDetection code
during the installation of Windows 95. The AutoDetection code will
incorrectly install two display nodes in the Device Manager. These
two nodes will then conflict with each other, causing the HawkEye
Driver to be disabled, and Safe Mode to be forced on (When Safe mode
is enabled, the system uses neither of the two installed Display nodes).
Since the problem is caused by the Win95 Setup program, there is nothing
that #9 can do to prevent the problem, however the solution is relatively
simple.
The conflict occurs because the setup program installs an "OTHER
DEVICES" display device in the Device Manager device list. The solution
is to remove the "OTHER DEVICES" display device from Device Manager, and
restart the system.
To remove the second display node, Open the Windows 95 Device Manager as
follows:
a) Right click on the 'My Computer' desktop icon.
b) Select 'Properties' from the drop down menu.
c) When the System Properties window opens, click on the 'Device Manager' tab.
d) Open "? Other Devices" by clicking on the plus (+) sign next to it.
e) Within "? Other Devices", if there is line called "PCI VGA-Compatible
Display adapter", do the following:
- highlight "PCI VGA-Compatible Display adapter" (click on it).
- click on 'REMOVE' at the bottom of the System Properties window
- restart Windows 95.
f) If this does not help, please contact Number Nine Tech support (see
the end of this README.TXT).

3. During the installation of HawkEye for Windows 95, you get the error
message "Unable to find #9 configuration file."
Resolution:
You may have created a temporary DIRECTORY called Number9 in
your ROOT directory (C:\Number9). Our configuration FILE is called
Number9 and is located in the ROOT directory (C:\Number9). Rename
the Number9 directory in the root directory to another name. It
is necessary that the Number9 configuration file remains in the
root directory of your boot drive.

4. You have run the Number Nine driver SETUP procedure but the additional
software (DirectX, ActiveMovie and Realimation) is not installed.
Resolution:
You will need to browse to the DirectX, ActMovie and Realimat directories
on the Imagine Series 2 CD-ROM and run the installation programs separately.
* * *
5. Realimation does not display colors correctly at 32bpp (True Color).
Resolution:
This is a limitation of that software. Run it instead at 15bpp or 16bpp.
* * *
6.Number Nine Energy Saver feature does not appear in the Number Nine
HawkEye Control Panel for Windows 95.
Resolution:
Energy Saver support is built into Windows 95 and can be selected
from Display properties in the Windows 95 Control Panel.
* * *
7. After shutting down HawkEye you cannot locate it to reopen it.
Resolution:
Double click on the Number Nine icon (in the tray at the right side of the
Windows 95 task bar) to reopen HawkEye.
* * *
8. You have selected 32K colors (15bpp) using Resolution Exchange
but Windows 95 Display Properties Settings indicates that you
are at 65K colors (16bpp).
Resolution:
Windows 95 does not provide a 15bpp color depth option and will
indicate 16bpp when either 15bpp (32K colors) or 16bpp (65K colors)
have been selected through Resolution Exchange.
You can use Resolution Exchange or Status to distinguish between
15bpp and 16bpp color depth settings.

9. After changing resolution or color depth using Windows 95
'Desktop area' or 'Color palette' your monitor exhibits slight
color separation (especially visible around text) and vertical
lines seem to shimmer .
Resolution:
Use Monitor Adjustment to change the refresh rate slightly.
NOTE: It is important to select the correct monitor model in
Windows 95 Display Properties. If you do not see your monitor
listed you can select one of the Standard Monitor types that most
closely fits the specified capabilities of your monitor.
* * *
10. You press your Zoom Hawk Key and no zoom occurs or when you open
the Zoom property page no zoom levels are available.
Resolution:
1) In general, more Zoom levels are available at higher color depths.
2) Some Zoom levels may become unavailable after changing the
vertical refresh rate (using Monitor Adjustment).
* * *
11. In Status, the Current Monitor Resolution does not update when
zooming.
Resolution:
The Current Monitor Resolution is not intended to reflect zoomed
resolutions.
* * *
12. When you change color depths with Resolution Exchange you are asked
to restart Windows 95.
Resolution:
You will always be prompted to restart Windows 95 when you
change color depths.
* * *
13. After using Microsoft QuickRes to change color depths, or playing a
DirectDraw game that uses multiple color depths, graphics performance is
reduced.
Resolution:
When Windows 95 changes the color depth without restarting Windows, some
portions of the Imagine display software are transparently replaced with
system graphics calls. This should not cause any display problems, but will
reduce graphics performance slightly. Restarting Windows will restore full
graphics performance.
* * *
14. Chameleon Cursor does not function when using "3D pointers",
"Windows Standard (extra large)", and "Windows Standard (large)"
pointer schemes, or Windows 95 mouse trails.
Resolution:
These pointer schemes and mouse trails are all software cursors. Chameleon
Cursor is for use on Hardware Cursors, and will not work on software
cursors. To find your mouse cursor easily, we suggest either using Mouse Trails
or Chameleon Cursor.

15. At 256 (8bpp) colors, desktop background colors may flash or shift
noticeably behind an active window.
Resolution:
With 256 colors, Windows 95 keeps the correct colors in the active
window, and allows the background colors to flash or shift. At higher
color depths (15bpp, 16bpp, 24bpp, 32bpp), Windows 95 maintains all
colors correctly.

16. Minor corruption is visible in a Windows 95 application.
Resolution:
If you are experiencing a problem and wish to determine whether
it is related to your Number Nine board, Windows 95 allows the
user to incrementally decrease the video acceleration. In doing
so you can determine whether or not it is your display driver
that is causing the problem.
To lower the acceleration:
- Click on the Windows 95 'Start' button.
- Select 'Settings' and then 'Control Panel'.
- Double click on the 'System' icon.
- Click on the 'Performance' tab, then on the 'Graphics' button.
- Move the acceleration slider to 'None' then click on OK.
- Click on OK again.
- You will then be prompted to restart your computer.
- Click 'yes'.
If the problem still occurs in an unaccelerated mode, then the problem
is most likely being caused by Windows 95 or other hardware/software
and not by the HawkEye for Windows 95 driver.
If the problem does not occur in unaccelerated mode, reset the video
acceleration to full and try disabling the HawkEye 95 Caching Options.
The HawkEye for Windows 95 Options page allows the user to disable Caching to
improve Windows 95 application reliability. If you are experiencing graphics
corruption with full acceleration that does not occur in unaccelerated mode,
you may be able to resolve the problem with the Options page settings.
The graphics corruption may be resolved by removing the check boxes for
Enable Device Bitmap Caching and/or Enable Font Caching on the HawkEye 95
Options page. Changing these settings requires a Windows restart before
the new settings are activated.
Disabling these settings will reduce graphics performance slightly, but not
as significantly as the graphics performance slider.
* * *
17. If you need to lower the graphics acceleration to None for
troubleshooting, you must disable Adobe Type Manager first if it is
running.
Resolution:
- Restart the system in Safe Mode by pressing F8 when the "Starting
Windows 95..." message appears, then choosing option 3.
- When Windows 95 is finished loading in Safe Mode, restore the graphics
acceleration to Full from the Control Panel System Performance page.
You may also have to change your display type back to Imagine 128 Series 2
from the Display Control Panel Settings page.
- After restarting Windows, turn off Adobe Type Manager using the ATM
Control Panel located in the Start Menu - Programs - Main group.
- After Windows is restarted with ATM disabled, you can lower the Imagine 128
Series 2 graphics acceleration to None.
* * *
18. After lowering the graphics acceleration to None, the HawkEye Status
page no longer displays the driver version.
Resolution:
With graphics acceleration set to None, the display driver version is not
available to HawkEye. You must increase the graphics acceleration and
restart Windows for HawkEye to be able to read the driver version.
* * *
19. After changing to a virtual resolution, sizable windows may
be too wide and/or too tall.
Resolution:
If you have not already done so, in the Number Nine HawkEye
Control Panel assign a Hawk Key to Place Windows.
For most windows, pressing the Place Windows Hawk Key once or
twice will re-size the active window to fit your monitor.
* * *
20. Switching a full-screen DirectDraw application to a windowed display on
a 16.7M color desktop displays a blank window.
Resolution:
If your hi-res Windows display is set to 16.7 million colors, and you
are playing a DirectDraw game which supports ALT-ENTER switching between
full screen and windowed, you may not get any windowed display. Setting
Windows to 256, 32K, or 65K colors before starting the game will allow ALT-
ENTER switching to work properly.

21. Direct3D applications are displaying incorrect colors in high-color
(16 bpp) display modes.
Resolution:
If the last high-color display mode that was selected in Resolution Exchange
was 32K colors, Direct3D applications will only have 15bpp available in high-
color modes. Some Direct3D applications assume that 16bpp are available in
high-color modes, and they will display incorrect colors.
Use Resolution Exchange to set your Windows 95 display to 65K colors. This
will toggle all high-color display modes to use 16bpp, and Direct3D will
display the correct colors. The Direct3D colors will remain correct until
a 32K color mode is selected again in Resolution Exchange.
* * *
22. After exiting from a full screen DirectDraw (Windows 95) game, the
Windows display is set to 640x480 resolution.
Resolution:
If you are using a #9 virtual resolution for your Windows display, DirectDraw
applications may not be able to properly restore your display mode on
exit. The DirectDraw game will always reset your Windows display to 640x480
resolution.
To maintain your correct display resolution on exit, use HawkEye's resolution
exchange to change your display to non-virtual before running the game.
* * *
23. After pressing the Place Windows Hawk Key while running a windowed
DirectDraw game, the game display is distorted.
Resolution:
The Place Windows Hawk Key will expand your current active application window
to a centered full-screen display. Some DirectDraw game windows are set
to a specific display size, and are not meant to be expanded. Using the Place
Windows Hawk Key may force the window to resize and corrupt the game display.

24. Accessing the #9 Monitor Adjust property page causes an invalid page
fault in MSYNC_95.DLL.
Resolution:
If your monitor type is set to Plug and Play (VESA DDC), but you are not
using a DDC compatible monitor, Monitor Adjust will not be able to properly
determine the monitor's refresh rate capabilities. Monitor Adjust will
attempt to read the monitor information and will close with an error box.
If you are not using a VESA DDC compatible monitor, you must manually change
your monitor type from the display settings page.
* * *
25. After running HawkEye at 640x480 and then switching to a higher display
resolution, the OK, Cancel, Apply, and Help buttons are clipped.
Resolution:
If you are using large fonts at 640x480 (or 1280x480 virtual) resolution,
the row of buttons along the bottom of the HawkEye control panel will extend
off the bottom of the screen, and may be clipped after switching to a higher
resolution.
Slight clipping can also occur at these 480 pixel height modes if your
taskbar is set to Always on Top.
Both Resolution Exchange and the Windows display settings pages will force
the system to use small fonts when entering 640x480 resolution. (This
requires a Windows restart if you are currently using large fonts.) If
you switch to 640x480 using QuickRes or another utility, you may want to
manually change your font size to prevent the clipping.
If your HawkEye buttons become clipped, you can always restore the buttons
by closing and restarting the HawkEye control panel.
* * *
26. After running a Number Nine Reality, Motion or Vision card in your system,
the Imagine 128 Series 2 card may not function properly.
Resolution:
With the Imagine Series 2 card installed, boot the system into DOS and run the
ireset.exe program from the Windows sub-directory (or the directory in which
you have installed Windows 95). This will create a new default number9.cfg file
and resolve the conflict.

OTHER PROBLEMS
------------------------------------------------------------------
Software sometimes does not perform consistently across all
resolutions and color depths. If you experience a persistent
problem for which you cannot determine a cause or resolution, try
switching to a different resolution and/or color depth with Resolution
Exchange.
If the problem is consistent across resolutions. Please
consult application documentation. Most applications are
distributed with a READ_ME file similar to this file.
READ_ME files usually contain a wealth of information
regarding potential application problems.

REMOVING IMAGINE 128 SERIES 2 HAWKEYE FOR WINDOWS 95
------------------------------------------------------------------
HawkEye 95 includes an uninstall program that is available through the
Windows 95 Control Panel Add/Remove Programs utility.
To remove HawkEye 95 from your system:
- Click on the Windows 95 'Start' button.
- Select 'Settings' and then 'Control Panel'.
- Double click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon.
- Locate HawkEye 95 on the list of software that can be removed.
- Either Double-click on HawkEye 95, or click once on HawkEye 95,
then click Add/Remove.
- The HawkEye 95 Uninstall utility will then ask you to confirm
that you want to continue before it removes the HawkEye 95 files
and registry entries from your system.
