This product is designed to run on any IBM PC or close
compatible using DOS 3.0 or greater. It is NOT recommended that
this product be used in a network environment as temporary work
files are from time to time created on your disk by the code for
which no allowance has been made for sharing or delineation.
The following files MUST reside in the default directory for
the Weather Wiz! to function properly:
WEATHER EXE
WTHR-DOC COM
WEATHER DAT
WEATHER DTA
WEATHER DTC
WEATHER DTM
The code got awfully fat awfully fast, and thus not much
space was used to "stupid-proof" this product. Upon initial
invocation, for example, if no WEATHER.CFG is found, the program
will come up in "Mono" mode. If the user tries to select color
options on a mono monitor, the program will cheerfully comply. If
one should try such a thing, or employ a combination of colors
which make the menu unreadable, simply erasing WEATHER.CFG will
return the next start-up to mono mode. Alternately, the only
command line option will also take precedence over the
configuration file: WEATHER [/MONO]
The code WILL detect whether a mouse is present, and will
automatically allow its use in making menu selections and
inputting data.
Alternately, your keyboard may be used for data input using
your cursor keys to highlight and option and Enter to select, or
by choosing the highlighted "Hot Key".
NOTE: Two cases have been reported where mouse operation
appears correct, but where input data is wrong! There has not
been enough incidence to track down and correct this errata, but
it is suggested you try inputting the same data two times, once
using your mouse and the other the keyboard to see if you get the
same result. In both reported incidents, only the data input
menus were in error, and in both the last possible option was
recorded regardless which was "clicked". This should result in
prediction of a hurricane or strong [whole] gale. A menu option
is provided to disable your mouse, and saving your current
configuration will cause the mouse to subsequently be disabled at
program start up.
Program operation is fairly straightforward and
self-explanatory. The only confusion (other than learning
subjective subtleties of observation and data input, of course)
might come if and when a program error is encountered. Every
effort has been made to exit the code smoothly and without
necessity of rebooting. In case an error is encountered, a box
will open announcing the problem and offering you the option of
"OK[/Enter]" or "Cancel[/Escape". If the error described is a
condition you can correct, do so and choose "OK", at which point
the code will try to resume at the point at which the error was
encountered. If unrecoverable, choose "Cancel" and the program
should terminate smoothly.
To hone their forecasting skills, users should familiarize
themselves with the Help sections regarding conventions for data
input.
