  1.      In the early part of  the  1400s,  a  German  goldsmith
  2. named Johann Gutenberg used his skills with relatively soft,
  3. malleable  metals  and an old winepress to fashion the first
  4. workable press with moveable type.  Until that  moment,  all
  5. books  were  copied  by  hand  - usually by robed monks in a
  6. monestary.  Until that moment, it was the monks who  decided
  7. what  books  we  could  or  could not read - what was fit or
  8. unfit for the human mind.   Until  that  time,  the  largest
  9. "library"  in  Europe  contained  only  fourteen hand-copied
  10. books.

  12.      Now,  thanks  to  Johann  Gutenberg,   the   publishing
  13. industry was born and hundreds of books - thousands of books
  14. could be printed in the time it would take the monks to copy
  15. a single one.

  17.      Since  that  time,  many publishers have published many
  18. books that they knew would not be  a  commercial  success  -
  19. never  be  a  Blockbuster  Seller.  However, many books have
  20. been published simply because someone  recognized  the  fact
  21. that these books were needed as a part of our culture.
