  18. 1. INTRODUCTION
  19. ---------------
  20. BusinessCards for Windows is a free form database program, useful for
  21. keeping track of any type of textual information. You can use
  22. BusinessCards to organise and manage any vital information, such as
  23. names, addresses, and phone numbers.
  24.  
  25. With BusinessCards you decide how to present and organize information.
  26. Instead of using predefined fields and record layouts, offered by most
  27. database programs and personal information managers, in BusinessCards
  28. you decide how to organize, format and display your data. Moreover, you
  29. may use BusinessCards to store random data, such as video or CD titles,
  30. short articles, descriptions of collection items, etc.

  32. BusinessCards is easy to use software. I've tried to make it to be more
  33. useful, than Windows Cardfile. BusinessCards has friendly and convenient
  34. notebook-like user interface. I expect you will be amazed by how fast
  35. you can learn to use it effectively.

  37. BusinessCards is compact. There are no requirements for megabytes of
  38. free disk space or extra memory to run the program. So if you are busy
  39. business traveller, you will be able to keep both program and data files
  40. on diskette and use them at client's site. Since BusinessCards  directly
  41. reads and writes Windows Cardfile files, there should be minimum
  42. problems, converting your existing address or price database.
  43.  
  44. Using BusinessCards Attachments feature, you also can easlily keep track
  45. of any number of external files, associated with specific card. For
  46. example, you can just clip all your contracts or invoices to card with
  47. your clientÆs address.

  49. Specifically, with BusinessCards you can:

  51.     *  Represent any unstructured textual data in a usual business card
  52.        form.
  53.  
  54.     *  Scan your data quickly using easy to follow book-like interface
  55.        and work with each card individually by selecting it.

  57.     *  Access the most often used commands by clicking on appropriate
  58.        toolbar button.
  59.  
  60.     *  View the table of contents for quick and easy navigating through
  61.        entire BusinessCards file.

  63.     *  Control the way your information is displayed by taking advantage
  64.        of the fonts, colors and alignment styles available.

  66.     *  Find exactly the information you require by using powerful
  67.        Searching feature.

  69.     *  Attachment feature, which allows to associate specific business
  70.        card with any number of external files.

  72.     *  Launching external applications from inside BusinessCards,
  73.        passing a file name associated with a business card.

  75.     *  Configurable toolbar, which allows you to assign any menu command
  76.        to any toolbar button.

  79.        options and save them for the next BusinessCards session.

  82. 2. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION V2.00
  83. ------------------------------
  84. BusinessCards version v2.00 has more than 10 new features, along with
  85. enhancements and improvements of the previous version. Most of the new
  86. features and enhancements have been inspired by users reports and their
  87. suggestions. Below is a list of major new features, implemented in new
  88. version v2.00:
  89.  
  90.     *  new File/Sort command, which allows to rearrange business cards
  91.        alphabetically within a file;
  92.  
  93.     *  new '@' tab, which may be used to store cards with
  94.        non-alphabetical data or data which begins with digits;
  95.  
  96.     *  BusinessCards now accepts file name as command line parameter -
  97.        the file is opened automatically on program startup;
  98.  
  99.     *  new status bar at the bottom of notebook, which displays messages
  100.        and shows length of card contents and total number of attachments
  101.        for current card;
  102.  
  103.     *  new "scrollable" card style in Options/Preferences dialog, which
  104.        allows to have cards with vertical scroll bar used to scroll
  105.        throught card contents;
  106.  
  107.     *  drag and drop capability using right mouse button lets you
  108.        rearrange cards easily within a page;
  109.  
  110.     *  the length of card contents has been increased to 512 bytes.

  112.     *  number and size of cards on a single page are configurable. Now
  113.        you may choose between 3 small cards (as in v1.00), 2 medium or 1
  114.        large card per page;
  115.  
  116.     *  now you can navigate more easily through file contents, flipping
  117.        non-empty pages and automatically skipping blank ones;
  118.  
  119.     *  BusinessCards now saves last used directory in all Open/Save
  120.        operations instead of starting each time from Windows directory.

  137. 4. INSTALLATION
  138. ---------------
  139. Create a directory specifically for BusinessCards, such as C:\BCARDS.
  140. Copy the BCARDS20.ZIP file to that directory. Then run PKUNZIP BCARDS20
  141. to unpack the files. From Windows you can create a visible icon in
  142. Program Manager 'File/New/Program Item Properties' dialog with a
  143. command line such as:

  145.          Description: BusinessCards
  146.        Commmand line: C:\BCARDS\BCARDS.EXE
  147.    Working directory: C:\BCARDS
  148.  
  149. To run BusinessCards just double click on the its icon. There is
  150. complete documentation and information on how to use BusinessCards in
  151. the on-line Help. Currently BusinessCards has the following limitations:
  152.  
  153.    -  length of card's text: 512 characters;
  154.    -  number of cards per tab letter: 30;
  155.    -  maximum number of cards per file: 810.

  158. 5. REGISTRATION INFORMATION
  159. ---------------------------
  160. This software is a fully operational program. I have made it this way so
  161. that you can have a real look at it, and then decide whether
  162. BusinessCards fit your needs or not. You are encouraged to use, copy,
  163. and distribute it as freely as you wish. But if you do find it useful,
  164. the author asks that you please register your copy.
  165.  
  166. There are 2 levels of registration - basic and premium. For the basic
  167. fee of $19.95 you will receive your personal serial number and: ^^^^^

  169.    1. The initial registration reminder dialog box which appears at the
  170.       beginning of the program is removed when you install your
  171.       registered copy. Also, your name will appear in Help/About dialog
  172.       box and word UNREGISTERED will be removed from program's title bar.

  174.    2. By registering, you are assured of receiving the most up-to-date
  175.       and full-featured product possible. All minor version upgrades are
  176.       free for registered users and major versions will be offered with
  177.       significant discount. When you register, you will be placed on
  178.       mailing list to receive notices of new major revisions when they
  179.       become available.

  181.    3. Registered users will receive free technical support over the
  182.       phone or email for their version of BusinessCards. Internet mail
  183.       is checked on a daily basis, and in most cases all questions will
  184.       be responded to within 24 hours. The AmericaOnline and CompuServe
  185.       accounts are also checked on a fairly regular basis (once a week
  186.       or so). For registered users bug fixes are also free.

  188. For the premium fee of $24.95 you will get all above plus:

  190.    1. Original diskette with most up to date version of BusinessCards

  197.       Windows ($10 registration fee) free!

  253. 6. DISTRIBUTION POLICY
  254. ----------------------
  255. Re-distribution by any media, disk, on-line services, Internet ftp
  256. servers or BBSes, is expressly encouraged. You can distribute it freely,
  257. but please note the following:

  259.    1. the files and programs on the disks cannot be modified in any way,
  260.       and must always be distributed together;
  261.  
  262.    2. when distributed via computerized bulletin boards or any other
  263.       on-line services, the files must be compressed together in library
  264.       format;
  265.  
  266.    3. vendors or distributors must inform the users that this is a
  267.       shareware program, seperate registration to the author is required
  268.       if they use my program after the evaluation period.

  271. 7. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY

  273. This software and the accompanying files are sold "as is" and without
  274. warranties as to performance of merchantability or any other warranties
  275. whether expressed or implied.

  278. BusinessCards may be used, no warranty of fitness for a particular
