  46.         This file explains how to setup and to configure the ELSA      
  47.         Windows NT driver software for your graphics board.

  57. 2       List of Installation Files                                     
  58.                                                                        
  59.         The directory with the ELSA graphics driver for Windows NT     
  60.         contains the following files:                                  
  61.                                                                        
  62.         GLADIAC.inf           script file for the installation      
  63.         DISK1                 source disk identifier                   
  64.         LIESMICH.TXT          German version of the file README.TXT    
  65.         README.TXT            the file you are currently reading       
  66.         i386\egdam.sy_        miniport driver (compressed)       
  67.         i386\egdad.dl_        display driver (compressed)        
  68.         i386\eoglgda.dl_      OpenGL ICD driver (compressed)

  72. 3       Installation                                                   
  73.                                                                        
  74.         NOTE: This driver was designed for full functionality under    
  75.               Windows NT 4.0 only!                                     
  76.                                                                        
  77. 3.1     Installation of the ELSA graphics driver                       
  78.                                                                        
  79.         NOTE: First install the Standard-VGA driver, then shut down    
  80.               your computer and exchange the graphics board with       
  81.               the ELSA GLADIAC.      
  82.                                                                        
  83.         In the Taskbar/Start/Settings, click on "Control Panel" and    
  84.         then select "Display Properties". Alternatively, you can       
  85.         right-click the desktop and in the appearing popup menu,       
  86.         select "Properties". Select "Settings" and then                
  87.         "Display Type". In the upcoming window you can use the         
  88.         "Change" button to select your ELSA graphics board.            
  89.         You will get the "Change Display" dialog box with a variety    
  90.         of available drivers.                                          
  91.                                                                        
  92.         On the lower right-hand of the dialog box select the button    
  93.         "Other...". The dialog "Install from disk" appears with an     
  94.         indication of path or floppy drive ("A:\"). Change the         
  95.         entry to the path where the driver files for your board are    
  96.         located (e.g."\ELSA\WINNT40") and confirm with                 
  97.         "Continue". Now a list of ELSA graphics drivers is             
  98.         displayed. Select the driver for your board. Confirm the       
  99.         dialog. The driver is installed after confirming the           
  100.         warning that a third-party driver will be installed.           
  101.                                                                        
  102.         NOTE: Under Windows NT 4.0, graphics drivers cannot be         
  103.               loaded dynamically. This is a limitation of the          
  104.               operating system.                                        
  105.                                                                        
  106.         To activate the ELSA driver the computer has to be             
  107.         restarted. Please press "Yes" in the relevant dialog.          
  108.         The system will reboot and the initial installation is         
  109.         finished.                                                      
  110.                                                                        
  111.         The initial installation of ELSA drivers for Microsoft         
  112.         Windows NT 4.0 installs the driver in a resolution of          
  113.         640*480 pixel at 60Hz refresh.                                 
  114.                                                                        
  115.         NOTE:   With the installation of the Windows NT 4.0 driver,    
  116.                 the ELSA OpenGL driver is automatically installed.     
  117.                                                                        
  118. 3.2     Making Installation Disks                                      
  119.                                                                        
  120.         To create installation disks for the ELSA graphics driver      
  121.         you will need an empty floppy disk labeled                     
  122.         "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 1".                                  
  123.         Copy the files from the according graphics board directory     
  124.         on the driver CD-ROM to the prepared disk.                     
  125.                                                                        
  126. 3.3     Testing the Installation and Determining the Driver Version    
  127.         Number                                                         
  128.                                                                        
  129. 3.3.1   Testing the Installation                                       
  130.                                                                        
  131.         From the Start menu, select "Settings" and in the Control      
  132.         Panel launch "Display". Select the tab "Settings" and then     
  133.         the button "Change configuration...". The following dialog     
  134.         gives information about the manufacturer, the version          
  135.         number and the current driver files.                           
  136.                                                                        
  137.         NOTE:   If you see "Version Information missing ", you did     
  138.                 not set US English as the system language. This        
  139.                 problem will appear in all non-American NT             
  140.                 installations. This is a limitation of the             
  141.                 operating system.                                      
  142.                                                                        
  143. 3.3.2   Determining the Version Number of the Driver via the Driver    
  144.         Files                                                          
  145.                                                                        
  146.         Use the Explorer to inspect the file properties for one of     
  147.         the files egdam.sys or egdad.dll. The file egdam.sys can be 
  148.         found in the directory System32\Drivers, the egdae.dll file 
  149.         in the System32 directory of your Windows NT installation.     
  150.

  152.                                                                        
  153. 4       Known Problems                                                 
  154.                                                                        
  155.                                                                        
  156.         - If you do not have installed the Service Pack 3              
  157.           (or higher) for NT4, AGP display cards only run in           
  158.           standard VGA mode. Please install a service pack 3 or        
  159.           higher to fix this problem!                                  
  160.                                                                        
  161.         - If you own a multi processor board with BX- or GX-           
  162.           chipset you have to install the Service Pack 4.              
  163.           Otherwise the system will not work correctly.                
  164.                                                                        
  165.         - The display driver is installed successfully, but after      
  166.           rebooting the system the driver is not activated.            
  167.           Your graphics board requires an IRQ. Please assign a         
  168.           unique IRQ to the slot which is related to your graphics     
  169.           board.                                                       
  170.                                                                        
  171.         - Video playback may result in pixel errors.                   
  172.           Please install the Intel Indeo 5 video codec.                
  173.                                                                        
  174.         - On some old Pentium Pro (TM) boards the system hangs         
  175.           if you write something to floppy disk or if you play         
  176.           sound files. This bug should be fixed by the manufacturer    
  177.           of this board! You can temporary fix it in registry          
  178.           (but slowing down the graphic):                              
  179.           - start the registry editor regedt32.exe                     
  180.           - open  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\         
  181.             Services\egdam\Device0\                              
  182.           - add the value "EnableWriteCombining: REG_DWORD: 0"         
  183.                                                                        
  184.         - If the ELSA PCI graphics board is not recognized, try        
  185.           another PCI slot. Some mainboards have PCI slots             
  186.           which are not PCI compliant.
