  11.  virus definitions. It automatically searches for Norton AntiVirus on 
  12.  your computer and updates the necessary files.

  41. Installation Files and Disk Sets
  42. =====================================================================
  43.  
  44.  The Intelligent Updater installation disks or CD contains several  
  45.  executable files. The filenames change from week to week. They show 
  46.  the month (mm) and day (dd) that the definitions were released.
  47.

  96.                   multiple versions of Norton AntiVirus. For more
  97.                   information, refer to the .txt files that come 
  98.                   with this program. It is not available on floppy 
  99.                   disk.

  102.                   for Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha

  107. I. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95
  108. =====================================================================
  109.  
  110.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  111.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  112.  These new virus definitions are not compatible with older versions 
  113.  of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause it to report false virus 
  114.  detections. To see which version you are using, click Help on the 
  115.  Norton AntiVirus menu bar. Then select About Norton AntiVirus. 
  116.  
  117.  Norton AntiVirus 2.0 users should be using version 2.01. If you need 
  118.  to update Norton AntiVirus, the patch filename is NAV95201.EXE.
  119.  
  120.  This patch is available on the Symantec BBS (541-484-6669), the 
  121.  Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), the Symantec 
  122.  Web site (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  123.  CompuServe, or America Online.
  124.  
  125.  Download or copy the patch file to a temporary directory and run it 
  126.  to extract the necessary files. Then click Setup to begin the 
  127.  installation process. After applying this patch, you must update the 
  128.  virus definition set.

  130.  Updating Norton AntiVirus 2.0 virus definition files

  132.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  133.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition
  134.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  135.     December 31 definition set. 
  136.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  137.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  138.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  139.     critical files.
  140.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  141.     definitions.

  145. II. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows 95

  150.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE

  156. III. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.x

  161.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus executable files (NAV.EXE, 
  162.  NAVW.EXE) to see if they are earlier than June 1, 1996. If they are, 
  163.  update them with the UPDATEME.EXE patch. 
  164.  
  165.  This patch is available on the Symantec BBS (541-484-6669), the 
  166.  Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), the Symantec 
  167.  Web site (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  168.  CompuServe, or America Online. You can also call Customer Service 
  169.  at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  171.  These new virus definitions are not compatible with older versions

  183.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  184.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  185.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  186.     December 31 definition set. 
  187.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  188.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  189.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  190.     critical files.
  191.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  192.     definitions.
  193.  
  194.  Updating NAV 3.0/4.0 virus definition files using DOS
  195.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  196.  1. If you are running Windows, exit to DOS. To do this, select Exit
  197.     from the File menu.
  198.  2. Make sure you have a temporary directory on your system that you 
  199.     can use to unload the virus definitions. Set this directory in 
  200.     DOS using the SET command. For example, type SET TEMP=C:\TEMP if 
  201.     the temporary directory is C:\TEMP. 
  202.  3. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  203.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  204.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  205.     December 31 definition set. 
  206.  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  207.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  208.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  209.     critical files.
  210.  6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  211.     definitions.

  213.  Troubleshooting
  214.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  215.  If the VIRSCAN.ZIP files are not deleted after a failed or 
  216.  cancelled attempt at updating the virus definitions, they can cause 
  217.  errors when running the Intelligent Updater program. To prevent 
  218.  these types of errors, make sure that the temporary directory is 
  219.  empty before starting the update.
  220.

  223. IV. NT Tools, NT Scanner and Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT
  224. =====================================================================
  225.  
  226.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  227.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  228.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  229.     December 31 definition set. 
  230.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  231.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot

  239. V. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows NT
  240. =====================================================================

  244.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the

  250. VI. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare
  251. =====================================================================
  252.  
  253.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  254.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  255.  If your version of NAV 2.0 for NetWare is dated earlier than 
  256.  December 13, 1995, you must upgrade your software before updating 
  257.  the virus definition files. The newer releases of Norton AntiVirus 
  258.  for NetWare v2 detect and remove Microsoft Word and Excel macro 
  259.  viruses. For information on how to receive the update, call Customer 
  260.  Service at (800) 441-7234.
  261.  
  262.  To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definition files: 
  263.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  264.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  265.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus for Netware is 
  266.     installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  267.     drive.
  268.  2. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. To do this, select
  269.     DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for 
  270.     NetWare Windows configuration window. Or, you can press F3 at the 
  271.     NAVNLM server console screen.
  272.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  273.     Intelligent Updater file. 
  274.  3. From a DOS prompt, type mmddN16.EXE [path] (or mmddN161.EXE 
  275.     [path] if using the multi-file floppy disk set) where the [path]
  276.     is the location you mapped in step 1. The mmdd represents the
  277.     date of the definition set. For example, the filename would be
  278.     1231N16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  279.  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  280.  7. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. Choose ENABLE NLM 
  281.     from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows 
  282.     configuration window. Or, you can press F2 at the NAVNLM server 
  283.     console screen.
  284.  8. If you created a temporary drive mapping, delete it.
  285.  
  286.

  288. VII. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for NetWare
  289. =====================================================================
  290.  
  291.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  292.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus for Netware is

  314. VIII. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  315. =====================================================================
  316.

  319.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager executable 
  320.  file (NAVNET.EXE) to see if it is earlier than June 1, 1996. If it 
  321.  is, you must update it with the UPDATEME.EXE patch before installing

  335.  NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory. Then run 
  336.  UPDATEME.EXE to extract the files. The complete directions are 
  337.  explained in the READ.ME file. 
  338.  
  339.  After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, recreate your .NNS 
  340.  files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template. For more information 
  341.  on recreating .NNS files, order FaxBack #913024 from our free 
  342.  FaxBack service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.
  343.  
  344.  The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set. You
  345.  must apply the latest virus definition set update after completing
  346.  the program update.
  347.  
  348.  Updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions
  349.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  350.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  351.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  352.     is installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  353.     drive.
  354.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  355.     Intelligent Updater file. 
  356.  3. Type mmddI16.EXE [path] (or mmddI161.EXE [path] if using the
  357.     multi-disk floppy disk set) where the [path] is the location of
  358.     the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager that you just mapped. The
  359.     mmdd represents the date of the definition set. For example, the
  360.     filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  361.  4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  362.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  363.     directory and scan the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager directory 
  364.     to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild critical files. 
  365.     To do this, type NAV from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  366.     directory.
  367.  
  368.  
  369. =====================================================================
  370. IX. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager for Win95 and WinNT
  371. =====================================================================
  372.  
  373.  Installing the definitions for Network Manager involves three steps.
  374.    1. Find the directory where virus definitions are stored.
  375.    2. Copy the appropriate Intelligent Updater program to that 
  376.       directory.
  377.    3. Run the Intelligent Updater program using the /dump command to 
  378.       extract the appropriate files.
  379.  
  380.  Locating the Definitions Directory
  381.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  382.  1. Find the .NNS file that Norton AntiVirus uses to distribute 
  383.     files. To find out which .NNS file the network uses, check the 
  384.     network login script. If it uses a customized .NNS file, the 
  385.     login script will specify the location of that file. If not, 
  386.     search the login script for the location of the NAVCHECK.EXE and 
  387.     NAV32UP.EXE distribution files. The default .NNS file 
  388.     (_DEFLT32.NNS) will be in the directory containing NAVCHECK.EXE 
  389.     and NAV32UP.EXE.
  390.  2. Look in the .NNS file for the parameter that points to the virus 
  391.     definitions directory. 
  392.       * In NavNet32 v2.0, the parameter "NAVDefDir" points to 
  393.         the definitions. 
  394.       * In NavNet32 v4.x, the parameter "NAVDefDir95" points to the 
  395.         Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 definitions. The parameter 
  396.         "NAVDefDirNTWKS" points to the Norton AntiVirus for NT 
  397.         workstation definitions, and "NAVDefDirNTSRV" points to the 
  398.         Norton AntiVirus for NT server definitions.
  399.  3. Note the definitions directory to be updated. 
  400.  
  401.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 2.0 
  402.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  403.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  404.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  405.     mapped drive.
  406.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI16.EXE file to the mapped network 
  407.     definitions directory. The mmdd represents the date of the    
  408.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE 
  409.     for the December 31 definition set.
  410.  3. Open a command line session (DOS box) and change to the mapped 
  411.     drive containing the older definitions and the new Intelligent 
  412.     Updater program.
  413.  4. To update definitions type mmddI16 /DUMP.
  414.  5. Delete mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE) from the definitions 
  415.     directory.

  417.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 4.0 
  418.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  419.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  420.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  421.     mapped drive.
  422.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI32.EXE file to the mapped network 
  423.     definitions directory. The mmdd represents the date of the

  434. X. Norton System Center
  435. =====================================================================
  436.  
  437.  See the Norton System Center documentation for instructions on 
  438.  distributing virus definitions with Central LiveUpdate. To 
  439.  distribute virus definition updates without Central LiveUpdate:
  440.  
  441.  1. Download the latest version of Intelligent Updater (v4.0).
  442.  
  443.  2. Copy Intelligent Updater to the definitions folder of your NSC 
  444.     installation. By default the location is the 
  445.     \NSC Repository\Products\NAV\Defs\Intel or Alpha folder.
  446.  
  447.  3. To avoid changing the job every time you update the definitions, 
  448.     rename the Intelligent Updater file as NEWDEFS.EXE and set the 
  449.     job to run this file. Otherwise you will always have to modify 
  450.     the job to use the correct file name. 
  451.  
  452.  4. Start Norton System Center and run your virus definitions rollout 
  453.     job. For more information on setting up NSC jobs, see your NSC
  454.     documentation.
  455.  
  456.  Whenever you want to distribute updated virus definitions, download 
  457.  a new Intelligent Updater, copy it to the source distribution 
  458.  folder, rename it NEWDEFS.EXE, and rerun the job. 
  459.  
  460.

  462. XI. Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha version
  463. =====================================================================
  464.  
  465. 1. Download the file mmddA32.ZIP.
  466. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  467.    \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming 
  468. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  469.    definitions.

  472. XII. Norton AntiVirus for OS/2
  473. =====================================================================
  474.  
  475. 1. Download the file mmddO32.ZIP.
  476. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  477.    \SYMANTEC\COMMON\SHARED\VIRUSDEFS\INCOMING
  478. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  479.    definitions.
  480.

  482. XIII. Norton AntiVirus Internet Email Gateways
  483. =====================================================================
  484.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product
  485.  With Live Update. If you must use the Intelligent updater then follow
  486.  these instructions carefully.
  487.  
  488. 1. Go to the Start menu and select "settings\control panel".
  489.    Select "services". Find "NAV for Internet Email Gateways" in the
  490.    service list and select it, then select the "stop" button. Select
  491.    "yes" when asked to confirm.
  492. 2. From a command prompt type "mmddX86.EXE /ieg". Remember the
  493.    the "mmdd" represents the date of the definition set so it will
  494.    change. For example, the filename would be 1231X86.EXE
  495.    for the December 31 definition set.
  496. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  497. 4. When Intelligent Updater finishes installing the definitions,
  498.    Select the "start" button to start the service again.
  499.

  527. 2. A message dialog box will appear momentarily on the screen 
  528.    indicating the NAV application is updating the virus definition
  529.    set.  Update of the virus definition is done automatically after 
  530.    executing the file mmddX86.EXE.

  532. 3. The NAV application will normally display the activated virus 
  533.    definition date on the initial NAV display with "Date:mm/dd/yyyy". 
  534.    Where mm/dd/yyyy represents the date of the virus definition set.

  541.  If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
  542.  definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  543.  extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files
  544.  to the virus definitions folder.

  546.  Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  547.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  548.  1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (mmddI16.EXE, mmddI161.EXE,
  549.     mmddI32.EXE, or mmddN16.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.
  550.  
  551.  2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command. 
  552.     This will extract all the virus definitions to the folder. For 
  553.     example, type mmddI32.EXE /DUMP to extract the files. The mmdd 
  554.     represents the date of the definition set. For example, the 
  555.     filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the December 31 definition set.

  557.  3. Copy the files to the virus definition folder. If you are using 
  558.     Norton AntiVirus 4.0 or 5.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT Server &
  559.     Workstation, copy the files to this location:
  560.     C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\
  561.  
  562.     NOTE: Copy the file ZDONE.DAT last. This file signals Norton
  563.     AntiVirus that the definition set has been completely loaded. If
  564.     it is not loaded last, it may cause errors.

  567.     on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
