  20. Matrox PowerDesk software includes a display driver and display utilities.
  21. With this software, you can take full advantage of your Matrox graphics
  22. hardware and you can access additional Matrox display-related features.

  28. To install Matrox PowerDesk, start the "setup" program included with it,
  29. then follow the on-screen instructions.

  31. The setup program will only install software if a Matrox graphics card model
  32. supported by the setup program is installed in your computer.

  43. Notes, problems, and limitations
  44. ================================

  46. - DirectDraw, Direct3D and DirectVideo support
  47.  
  48.   The DirectDraw driver we provide is compatible with DirectX 2 (and
  49.   later) and includes Direct3D support. For our DirectDraw/Direct3D
  50.   driver to be called, and benefit from hardware acceleration,
  51.   Microsoft DirectX 2 (or later) MUST be installed, even for programs
  52.   originally made for DirectX 1.
  53.  
  54.   Also, if a recent version of DirectX isn't installed, some Matrox
  55.   PowerDesk features may not be available.
  56.  
  57.   We provide DirectX on the Matrox CD-ROM. The latest DirectX is
  58.   available from the Microsoft Web site, and is included with many
  59.   DirectX programs.
  60.  
  61.   IMPORTANT: If the DirectX setup program prompts you to replace the
  62.   existing display drivers, click "No". Otherwise, the setup program
  63.   installs display drivers which are not as optimized as the Matrox
  64.   drivers and which do not support PowerDesk software.
  65.  
  66.   Note that depending on the origin of your Microsoft DirectX software,
  67.   it may not include DirectVideo support. For faster playback of Indeo
  68.   and Cinepak AVI files, you should install Microsoft DirectVideo
  69.   support.

  71. - Matrox bus mastering
  72.  
  73.   This driver supports bus mastering. Bus mastering is a feature that
  74.   allows expansion cards to perform tasks at the same time as your
  75.   computer's CPU. If you have a fast Pentium computer (faster than
  76.   166 MHz), the display performance of most programs is improved when
  77.   bus mastering is used.
  78.  
  79.   To use bus mastering with 3D (DirectX) programs, your graphics card
  80.   needs an interrupt request (IRQ). Most computers automatically assign
  81.   an IRQ to graphics cards, but some do not. If your graphics card hasn't
  82.   been assigned an IRQ, programs that use Matrox bus mastering may not
  83.   work properly. For more information, see your Matrox or system manual.

  85. - DirectDraw and Automatic Power Management
  86.  
  87.   As stated in "Microsoft DirectX Release Notes", September 30, 1995, a
  88.   DirectDraw game may be unable to restore properly if it is suspended
  89.   by Automatic Power Management utilities.
  90.  
  91. - Installation in different language versions of Windows
  92.  
  93.   If you install software in a language different from the language of
  94.   your operating system (for example, English software on a Japanese
  95.   system), you may have problems with text and dialog box controls being
  96.   cut off. This is because of differences in system fonts.

  98. - OpenGL support
  99.  
  100.   Note the following limitations related to the OpenGL driver included with
  101.   Matrox PowerDesk:
  102.  
  103.     - OpenGL support may not be included in some versions of Matrox PowerDesk.
  104.       For a version of Matrox PowerDesk with OpenGL support enabled, see
  105.       the Matrox Web site (www.matrox.com/mga).
  106.  
  107.     - Regardless of your graphics card or display driver, Windows 98 only
  108.       supports OpenGL acceleration with the primary display of your computer.
  109.       (The "primary display" is the one that first displays information when
  110.       you restart your computer.)
  111.  
  112.     - With the "Tribes" game, you may notice some minor display artifacts and
  113.       the opening video introduction may not display properly.
  114.  
  115.     - Using 3D Studio Max 2.0, you may experience problems with the viewports
  116.       being improperly redrawn. If this happens, simply click in a viewport
  117.       to properly update their display. (This problem isn't present with
  118.       version 2.5 or 3.0 of 3D Studio Max.)

  120. - DualHead Multi-Display mode under Windows 2000
  121.  
  122.   If you have a DualHead-supporting graphics card and you apply "DualHead
  123.   Multi-Display" mode under Windows 2000, Matrox PowerDesk automatically
  124.   clears the Windows check box called "Hide modes that this monitor cannot
  125.   display". (This check box is in the advanced settings of the "Display
  126.   Properties" dialog box.)

  128.   Under Windows 2000, please don't enable this check box while using
  129.   DualHead Multi-Display mode -- doing so may cause problems. When DualHead
  130.   Multi-Display mode is disabled, this option will be automatically restored
  131.   to its previous setting. For more information on DualHead Multi-Display
  132.   mode, see context-sensitive help.

  134. - 15-bit color palette support for Windows 2000
  135.  
  136.   For advanced users: By default, the 15-bit color palette is unavailable
  137.   for Windows 2000. If you need to use this color palette, you can make it
  138.   available by adding the "User.Enable15Bpp" value to your Windows registry
  139.   and then setting this value to "1". If you're adding this value, add it
  140.   under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" -> "SYSTEM" -> "CurrentControlSet" -> "Services"
  141.   -> "mgau" or "g200" or "g400" -> "Device0". The value type is "REG_DWORD".

  143. - "Monitor Settings" property sheet
  144.  
  145.   The current Matrox display driver for Windows 2000 doesn't include the
  146.   "Monitor Settings" property sheet. (This property sheet is included with
  147.   the Matrox display driver for Windows 95/98.) This property sheet will be
  148.   included with a future Matrox display driver for Windows 2000. Matrox
  149.   software updates are available on the Web (www.matrox.com/mga).
