TurboLinux 2.1.0beta (Jamestown)
September 2, 1998
README - by Scott Stone <sstone@turbolinux.com>
------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the first beta in the TurboLinux 2.1 beta cycle!
Since this is an early beta, not everything is working yet:
* There is no APM kernel.
* The sysboot.img is not current (don't use it).
* You have to specify an IP address, not a hostname, for an
FTP install.
In addition, there are some things that I didn't have time to test:
* LOADLIN install launch method
* CD boot install launch method
* SMB install
* HD partition install
* Mounting Fat32 partitions
* Desktop tools compatibility w/ new versions of perl and perl-Tk
* 'rescue' mode on boot floppy
So, please try these things and let me know how badly they're broken :)
New Features since 2.0:
* Installer ported to glibc.
* Kernel 2.0.35 + patches
* pcmcia services support the Ricoh controller in the Sharp Mebius.
* XFree86 3.3.2+X_TT X servers - Truetype font capability.
* Turboxcfg can probe (some) AGP cards (right now only the Mach64 AGP).
* New turbousercfg/xturbousercfg tool.
* egcs replaces gcc
* new asmail and asmodem icons/programs on desktop.
* qt and related baggage is *gone*.
* many updated packages, security fixes, bug fixes, etc.
As usual, please test this disc as thoroughly as you can. Please make
all reports either to sstone@turbolinux.com or to the
'tlbeta@ume.pht.co.jp' mailing list address, if you wish to share your
comments with the other beta testers.
TO DO for next beta(s):
* Finish turbofscfg/xturbofscfg
* Finish turbonetcfg/xturbonetcfg
* Finish xturboappmgr (application launcher program for X)
* Improve dependency handling in turbopkg/xturbopkg
* Turboxcfg needs to understand more AGP cards, 32bpp modes, virtual screens.
* Installer needs to have some dialog boxes reflowed, some text changed.
* Finish updating all packages
* Any necessary bug-fixes
Please also let me know of any suggestions that you have for improving
TurboLinux.
