  91. Installing a New Driver or Updating an Existing Driver for OS/2 2.1X/Warp/SMP
  92. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  93.  
  94.   1) Open the OS/2 System Folder, then open the System Setup folder.
  95.  
  96.   2) If running OS/2 Warp 4.0, open the Install/Remove Folder.
  97.  
  98.   3) Double-click on Device Driver Install.
  99.  
  100.   4) Insert the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set 2.1x floppy in the
  101.      appropriate drive.
  102.  
  103.   5) Change to the directory where the driver is located, usually \OS2.
  104.                                       
  105.   6) When you find the driver (AIC7870.ADD), select INSTALL.
  106.  
  107.   7) After the install finishes, select EXIT and reboot the computer.
  108.  
  109. You may also install the driver manually. 
  110. If running OS/2 2.1X, copy AIC7870.ADD to C:\OS2.
  111. If running OS/2 Warp 3.x, 4.0 or SMP copy AIC7870.ADD to C:\OS2\BOOT.
  112. Add a line to your CONFIG.SYS that says BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD /V.
  113.  
  114.  
  115. First-Time Installation of OS/2 2.1X/Warp/SMP From Floppy Diskette
  116. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  117.  
  118. (NOTE:  To install the aic7870.add driver, it is necessary to copy the
  119. driver from the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x diskette for OS/2 on
  120. to the OS/2 Diskette #1. However, before you can copy the driver, you must
  121. first remove various files from the OS/2 Diskette #1, as explained in step 2
  122. below.)
  123.  
  124.   1) Make backup copies of the Installation Diskette and Disk #1.
  125.  
  126.   2) Delete some of the existing files on the backup copy of the OS/2
  127.      diskette #1 so that approximately 140 KB of disk space is available
  128.      on the diskette. Use the following information to help you decide
  129.      which files to delete. 
  130.  
  131.      a) If the Adaptec 7800 Family host adapter is the only Adaptec host
  132.         adapter installed in your system, delete all other Adaptec drivers
  133.         (aha152x.add, aha154x.add, aha164x.add, aha174x.add, aic7770.add
  134.         and fd16-700.add).
  135.  
  136.      b) If you have an Adaptec host adapter that is not part of the 7800
  137.         Family , delete all of the Adaptec drivers not used by that
  138.         particular host adapter. For example, if you have an Adaptec
  139.         AHA-1540CP host adapter installed in your computer, delete all
  140.         Adaptec drivers except for the aha154x.add driver. 
  141.  
  142.      c) If you have deleted the suggested Adaptec drivers above, and if you 
  143.         do not have a Microchannel architecture system, and you still do not
  144.         have approximately 140 KB of disk space available on the diskette,
  145.         delete these files: ibm2flpy.add, ibm2adsk.add, and ibm2scsi.add.
  146.      
  147.      (NOTE: If you have a combination PCI/Microchannel architecture system,
  148.      you need to delete third-party driver files not required.)
  149.  
  150.   3) If you are installing OS/2 2.1X, use the backup copies of the
  151.      Installation Diskette and Disk #1 to do the following:
  152.  
  153.      a) Copy OS2LDR from the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x diskette
  154.         onto the Installation Diskette.
  155.  
  156.      b) Copy IBMINT13.I13 from the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x 
  157.         diskette onto Disk #1.
  158.  
  159.      (NOTE:  You do not need these files when installing OS/2 Warp or SMP.)
  160.  
  161.   4) Add the following line to the config.sys file on OS/2 diskette #1:
  162.   
  163.           BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD
  164.           
  165.   5) Install OS/2 using the backup diskettes and the remainder 
  166.      of the standard OS/2 diskettes.
  167.      
  168.   6) When installation has completed, reboot the system.
  169.  
  170.   7) After the system has rebooted, follow the instructions for installing
  171.      the driver on a system containing OS/2.
  172.  
  173.  
  174. First-Time Installation of OS/2 2.1X From CD-ROM
  175. ------------------------------------------------
  176.  
  177. (NOTE:  To install the aic7870.add driver, it is necessary to copy the
  178. driver from the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x diskette for OS/2 on
  179. to the OS/2 Diskette #1. However, before you can copy the driver, you must
  180. first remove various files from the OS/2 Diskette #1, as explained in step 2
  181. below.)
  182.  
  183.   1) Use diskcopy to make backup copies of all IBM OS/2 and Adaptec
  184.      supplied diskettes. Use the backup copies as your working diskettes.
  185.  
  186.   2) Delete some of the existing files on the backup copy of the OS/2
  187.      diskette #1 so that approximately 140 KB of disk space is available
  188.      on the diskette. Use the following information to help you decide
  189.      which files to delete. 
  190.  
  191.      a) If the Adaptec 7800 Family host adapter is the only Adaptec host
  192.         adapter installed in your system, delete all other Adaptec drivers
  193.         (aha152x.add, aha154x.add, aha164x.add, aha174x.add, aic7770.add
  194.         and fd16-700.add).
  195.  
  196.      b) If you have an Adaptec host adapter that is not part of the 7800
  197.         Family, delete all of the Adaptec drivers not used by that
  198.         particular host adapter. For example, if you have an Adaptec
  199.         AHA-1540CP host adapter installed in your computer, delete all
  200.         Adaptec drivers except for the aha154x.add driver. 
  201.  
  202.      c) If you have deleted the suggested Adaptec drivers above, and if you 
  203.         do not have a Microchannel architecture system, and you still do not
  204.         have approximately 140 KB of disk space available on the diskette,
  205.         delete these files: ibm2flpy.add, ibm2adsk.add, and ibm2scsi.add.
  206.      
  207.      (NOTE: If you have a combination PCI/Microchannel architecture system,
  208.      you need to delete third-party driver files not required.)
  209.   
  210.   3) Copy the OS2LDR file from the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x 
  211.      diskette (i.e., \OS2\OS2LDR) onto the OS/2 installation diskette.
  212.      This overwrites the existing OS/2 loader on the diskette.
  213.  
  214.   4) Copy the IBMINT13.I13 driver from the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set 
  215.      v2.1x diskette (i.e.,\OS2\IBMINT13.I13) onto the OS/2 installation
  216.      diskette #1. This overwrites any existing version of the driver
  217.      included on diskette #1.
  218.  
  219.   5) Copy the AIC7870.ADD driver from the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set 
  220.      v2.1x diskette (i.e., \OS2\AIC7870.ADD) onto the OS/2 installation
  221.      diskette #1. This overwrites any existing version of the driver
  222.      included on diskette #1.
  223.  
  224.   6) Modify the CONFIG.SYS file on diskette #1 to include the following
  225.      line:
  226.  
  227.           BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD
  228.  
  229.   7) Run the OS/2 installation program; follow the instructions in your
  230.      OS/2 documentation.
  231.  
  232.   8) At the end of the installation process, follow the on screen instructions
  233.      to remove the last OS/2 distribution diskette and reboot the computer.
  234.      If the computer fails to boot up, and locks up while displaying the OS/2
  235.      logo screen, you may use one of the following options to get to the 
  236.      command prompt:
  237.  
  238.      a) If you installed OS/2 using the FAT Filesystem, boot up MS-DOS 
  239.         to get to the command prompt.
  240.  
  241.      b) If you installed OS/2 using the HPFS Filesystem, insert the 
  242.         Installation Diskette and boot up the computer from this diskette.
  243.         When the IBM screen is displayed, remove the Installation diskette
  244.         and insert Diskette #1 as instructed to do so. After a while, a screen 
  245.         will be displayed asking which installation method you wish to choose.
  246.         At this point, press the F3 key to get to the command prompt.
  247.  
  248.      Once you get to the command prompt, change to the drive where the OS/2 
  249.      system files are located (usually Drive C:).  You may now use a text
  250.      editor to again modify the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file on the hard drive to add
  251.      the /!PCIHW switch to the BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD line. OS/2 should then
  252.      boot normally from the hard disk.
  253.  
  254.   9) After the computer has restarted, OS/2 displays a screen. You have the
  255.      option to view online information while the OS/2 desktop is building.
  256.      Allow OS/2 to finish building, and follow the on screen instructions to
  257.      restart the computer. Again, if the computer fails to boot up, and locks
  258.      up while displaying the OS/2 logo screen, repeat the process specified
  259.      in step 8 to correct the problem.
  260.  
  261. (NOTE:  The CONFIG.SYS, IBMINT13.I13, and OS2LDR files may be overwritten
  262. by equivalent files from the CD-ROM. If this occurs, follow step 8 above
  263. to recover those files.)
  264.  
  265.  
  266. First-Time Installation of OS/2 Warp 3.x, 4.0 or SMP From CD-ROM
  267. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  268.  
  269. (NOTE:  To install the aic7870.add driver, it is necessary to copy the
  270. driver from the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x diskette for OS/2 on
  271. to the OS/2 Diskette #1. However, before you can copy the driver, you must
  272. first remove various files from the OS/2 Diskette #1, as explained in step 2
  273. below.)

  305.      diskette #1.  This overwrites any existing version of the driver 
  306.      included on diskette #1.
  307.      
  308.   4) For each driver removed from the OS/2 diskette #1, remove its 
  309.      corresponding line in the config.sys file (also on OS/2 diskette #1).
  310.      
  311.      For example, if you deleted all Adaptec drivers, as explained in step 
  312.      2a, above, remove the following lines from config.sys:
  313.      
  314.         basedev=aha152x.add
  315.         basedev=aha154x.add
  316.         basedev=aha164x.add
  317.         basedev=aha174x.add
  318.         basedev=aic7770.add
  319.         basedev=fd16-700.add
  320.   
  321.   5) In the config.sys file on OS/2 diskette #1, add the line
  322.      "set copyfromfloppy=1".
  323.   
  324.      This line should be added so that the install process copies the 
  325.      aic7870.add driver from the OS/2 diskette #1, rather than the driver 
  326.      included on your OS/2 CD-ROM.
  327.      
  328.      (NOTE: Add "BASEDEV=aic7870.add" to the top line of config.sys on
  329.      OS/2 diskette #1.  This will result in two "BASEDEV=aic7870.add"
  330.      statements in the config.sys file.)
  331.  
  332.   6) Run the OS/2 installation program; follow the instructions in your 
  333.      OS/2 documentation, until you reach the System Configuration window.
  334.   
  335.   7) In the System Configuration window, click the SCSI Adapter Support 
  336.      icon.
  337.   
  338.   8) Deselect any highlighted adapters (including the Adaptec 294x, 394x, 
  339.      AIC7870 PCI SCSI), and click OK.  The text box for SCSI Adapter 
  340.      Support should say "None".
  341.      
  342.      (NOTE: If these adapters are not deselected, the driver included on
  343.      the CD-ROM will be copied over the driver being installed.)
  344.  
  345.   9) Follow the instructions in your OS/2 documentation to complete the 
  346.      installation.
  347.   
  348. (NOTE:  The update files OS2LDR and IBMINT13.I13 included in the Adaptec 
  349. 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x are not needed when installing OS/2 Warp or SMP.)
  350.  
  351. (NOTE:  Verify after installation is complete, that only one 
  352. "BASEDEV=aic7870.add" statement exists in your config.sys file on your hard 
  353. drive.  Remove other instances if more than one is found.)
  354.

  357. Known Issues
  358. =-=-=-=-=-=-=
  359.  
  360. o  OS/2 2.1X currently does not identify PCI systems and handles them
  361.    in the same way it would an ISA system. This can cause several 
  362.    different problems: 
  363.  
  364.       1) Trouble installing OS/2 2.1X, and
  365.    
  366.       2) An inability to share a single interrupt between multiple PCI
  367.          adapters.
  368.       
  369.    IBM is aware of these problems and has open APARs (PJ14230 and PJ14710)
  370.    tracking them. They will be fixed in a future release of OS/2; please
  371.    check the list of closed APARs accompanying each future release.
  372.  
  373.    Currently, we have files which can be used as interim fixes for both
  374.    these problems:
  375.  
  376.       OS2LDR - A new PCI aware version of the loader. This file can be
  377.       used during installation or installed after the installation of
  378.       OS/2 has completed.
  379.  
  380.       IBMINT13.I13 - A new PCI aware version of the generic INT 13H driver
  381.       that is used during installation from floppy disk.
  382.  
  383. o  If you update Disk #1 of the CD-ROM installation to include OS2LDR,
  384.    please be aware that this file will be overwritten from the CD-ROM. It
  385.    may have to be updated again on the boot drive when the installation
  386.    has completed.
  387.  
  388. o  The update files OS2LDR and IBMINT13.I13 included in the Adaptec 7800
  389.    Family Manager Set v2.1x are not needed when installing OS/2 Warp or SMP.
  390.  
  391. o  This version of the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x driver added
  392.    a new switch named /!PCIHW which enables the driver to skip accessing
  393.    the PCI hardware registers directly, and use PCI BIOS instead. This
  394.    switch could be useful for users having problems loading the AIC7870.ADD
  395.    included with OS/2 Warp or SMP. Modify the CONFIG.SYS file to include
  396.    the following line:
  397.                         
  398.       BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD /!PCIHW
  399.  
  400. o  Intel Errata #8511 lists known data integrity issues with the 
  401.    processor cache on the Saturn-1 chipset (82424TX).  For this reason,
  402.    Adaptec recommends that processor cache be disabled via the CMOS 
  403.    setup to avoid data corruption.  For more information, see Intel 
  404.    Errata #8511.  You may get this from Intel's FaxBack system at 
  405.    800.628.2283 or 916.356.3105.  For more detailed information see 
  406.    Errata #8512 and 8513.  
  407.                     
  408. o  There is currently no support for installing OS/2 2.0 on a hard drive
  409.    attached to an AIC-7870, due to limitations in the installation
  410.    procedure. Upgrading to OS/2 2.1 or higher is recommended.
  411.  
  412.  
  413.

  415. Additional Notes
  416. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
  417.  
  418. o  This version of the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x driver supports
  419.    the AIC-7800 Family of Host Adapters.  Adapter numbers are first assigned
  420.    to boards with their BIOS enabled.  The numbers are assigned from lowest
  421.    BIOS address to highest address.  Any remaining boards are assigned
  422.    numbers by scanning slots.  Each slot is a combination of a bus number
  423.    and a device number pair starting from lowest to highest numbers, and the
  424.    adapters are assigned a number in the order they are found.
  425.    
  426.       Example: Bus 0, device 0 assigned as adapter 0,
  427.                Bus 1, device 1 assigned as adapter 1, etc.
  428.    
  429.  
  430. o  On some PCI systems, users may sometimes have problems loading the
  431.    AIC7870.ADD when the host adapter board is seated in a particular slot.
  432.    Moving the host adapter board to another slot may solve the problem. If
  433.    the problem still persists, it may be occurring because the Adaptec 7800
  434.    Family Manager Set v2.1x driver is unable to access the PCI hardware
  435.    registers directly. To overcome this, users should use the /!PCIHW
  436.    switch. Modify the CONFIG.SYS file to include the following line:
  437.  
  438.       BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD /!PCIHW
  439.  
  440. o  There are no switches for controlling OS2ASPI.DMD directly. IBM did
  441.    not define them in their specification and we cannot be sure that other
  442.    host adapters will have the same switches.
  443.  
  444. o  OS2SCSI.DMD will only allocate devices when a device driver
  445.    requests it, but this will prevent OS2ASPI from accessing it. There
  446.    is nothing in the ASPI specification regarding device allocation so
  447.    OS2ASPI must rely on other managers to fairly share targets. This
  448.    should only be a problem if you have two drivers that use different
  449.    managers and you want them both to access the same target at the same
  450.    time.
  451.  
  452. o  Do NOT disable DASD manager access to target 0 if you are booting
  453.    from your SCSI host adapter. This will prevent the system from booting!
  454.  
  455. o  Fault Tolerance is supported in the driver. However, ABORT and SCSI
  456.    BUS RESET will only work for targets that are properly behaved.
  457.  
  458.  
  459.

  461. Command Line Options
  462. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
  463.  
  464. OS/2 adapter device drivers (.ADD files) are normally installed 
  465. automatically and require no further information from the user. However,
  466. in certain situations the user may wish to modify the behavior of the 
  467. driver to meet their specific needs.
  468.  
  469. (IMPORTANT:  Please proceed cautiously with the following information.)
  470.  
  471. The standard format for command line switches is :
  472.  
  473. BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD [Universal Parameter][Adapter ID][Unit Parameter]
  474.           {[SCSI Target ID]}
  475.  
  476. o  [Universal Parameter] - An option that applies to all adapters 
  477.    controlled by the driver.
  478.  
  479. o  [Adapter ID] - /A:n, where n is the number (zero relative) of the
  480.    adapter installed in the system. The adapter ID is determined when 
  481.    the driver is loaded based on the order that adapters are 
  482.    found in the system. (See below, AIC7870.ADD Specific Command
  483.    Line Switches.)
  484.  
  485. o  [Unit Parameter] - Modifies the behavior of the selected host adapter.
  486.

  491. Universal Parameters:

  494. o  /ET -- Allow embedded targets.  This parameter indicates that the ADD
  495.       should assume that all targets have more than one logical unit (LUN)
  496.       defined.

  498. o  /!ET -- Do not allow embedded targets (DEFAULT). This parameter indicates
  499.       that the ADD should assume that all targets have only one logical 
  500.       unit (LUN) defined.

  502. o  /V -- Load driver verbosely. This parameter will display the driver
  503.       name as well as the version number and Adaptec copyright if the driver
  504.       loads successfully. Information on all targets found in the system
  505.       will also be displayed.

  507. o  /PCIHW -- Enables driver to access PCI configuration hardware registers.
  508.       This switch is implemented because in some PCI systems, accessing
  509.       PCI configuration space through PCI BIOS function calls causes
  510.       problems. This switch is enabled by default.

  512. o  /!PCIHW -- Disables the PCIHW switch. This parameter will cause the driver
  513.       to access the PCI configuration space through PCI BIOS function calls.

  518. o  /I -- Ignore the specified adapter. This allows another driver to
  519.       share the adapters that the ADD would normally use.

  521. o  /DM -- Enable DASD manager support (DEFAULT). This parameter allows
  522.       OS2DASD.DMD to control the specified target(s) if they are 
  523.       identified as DASD (hard disk) devices.

  526.       OS2DASD.DMD from controlling the specified target(s).

  552.       floppy and prevent you from sending any SCSI commands via ASPI.

  554.       The following command line will prevent OS2DASD.DMD from accessing
  555.       the target and still allow OS2SCSI.DMD and OS2ASPI.DMD to share access
