  31. for the PIIX Bus Master IDE Drivers for Windows 95*. Also included 
  32. are release notes describing any problems or issues with the software which 
  33. were known at the time of shipment.

  56. * 1.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS                                                  *
  57. ****************************************************************************
  58. This section describes system requirements for the PIIX Bus Master IDE Device
  59. Driver for Windows 95*.  Refer to the Release Notes section of this document
  60. for additional information regarding this release.
  61.  
  62. NOTE:  This driver has been designed for and tested with Windows 95* only.
  63.     This driver will only install on systems with Windows 95*.
  64.  
  65.  
  66. 1.  The system must contain a supported Intel processor and chip set
  67.     configuration:      
  68.  
  69.         Chip set:  Intel 430FX, 430HX, 430TX, 430VX and 440FX chip sets. 
  70.         Processor:  Intel Pentium(R), Pentium(R) with MMX(TM) Technology, 
  71.         Pentium(R) Pro, and Pentium(R) II devices ONLY.  
  72.  
  73. 2.  Ensure that a mouse is connected to the system.
  74.  
  75. 3.  One of the following versions of Windows 95*  must be
  76.     installed on the system prior to running utility program.
  77.     Windows 95* 4.00.950   (Retail)
  78.     Windows 95* 4.00.950a  (OSR1)
  79.     Windows 95* 4.00.950b  (OSR2 without USB Supplement)
  80.     Windows 95* 4.00.950b  (OSR2.1 with USB Supplement)
  81.  
  82. 4.  This utility should only be used on desktop systems.  The
  83.     utility must not be executed on notebook or portable systems
  84.     with or without dock.
  85.  
  86. 5.  It is assumed that the BIOS properly initialized the 82371xB IDE interface
  87.     for Bus Master IDE operation. 
  88.  
  89. 6.  There are no other non-82371xB IDE controllers (add-in IDE controller or
  90.     sound card with IDE) enabled on the system.

  111. * 3.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE                                              *

  113. This installation procedure is specific only to the version of the driver
  114. and installation file included in this package.  
  115.  
  116. This subsection describes how to install the software on a system where 
  117. Windows 95* is installed.
  118.  
  119. NOTE:   Record the location of the Windows 95* directory before 
  120.         installing the driver.
  121.  
  122. 1.  Check the System Requirements.  Windows 95* must be fully installed and 
  123.     running on the system prior to running this software.
  124.  
  125. 2.  Close any running applications.
  126.  
  127. 3.  Remove references to installed real-mode IDE device drivers in the
  128.     AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files (especially any drivers that control
  129.     ATAPI CD-ROM and special IDE features).   Use the Notepad utility to do 
  130.     this.
  131.  
  132. 4.  The driver files are stored in an integrated application setup program.  
  133.     This program is a Windows 95* program that allows the driver files to be 
  134.     INSTALLED or DE-INSTALLED.
  135.     
  136.     Execute the driver setup program.
  137.  
  138.     Run SETUP.EXE.
  139.  
  140. 4.  Click 'Next' on Welcome Screen to read and agree to the license agreement.
  141.     View the text file and choose File\Exit to close Notepad and
  142.     continue.  NOTE:  If you click 'No', program will terminate.
  143.  
  144. 5.  Click 'Yes' if you agree to continue.  NOTE:  If you click 'No', the 
  145.     program will terminate.
  146.  
  147. 6.  Select 'INSTALL', to install the PIIX Bus Master IDE Device Driver when 
  148.     prompted to do so.
  149.  
  150.     NOTE:  if the driver is currently installed on the system, SETUP will
  151.     ask you whether or not you want to continue.  Follow the prompts on the
  152.     screen to Install the driver if desired.
  153.  
  154. 7.  Click 'OK' to restart the system when prompted to do so.
  155.  
  156. 8.  Follow the screen instructions and use default settings to complete the 
  157.     setup when Windows 95* is re-started.
  158.  
  159.     Upon re-start, Windows 95* will display that it has found an Intel PCI 
  160.     Bus Master IDE controller hardware and is installing hardware for it.
  161.  
  162.     If a "New Hardware Found" dialog box is displayed requesting the 
  163.     location of  the drivers, use the mouse to click on the scrollbar
  164.     and click on the <Windows 95* directory>\System\IOSubSys path:
  165.  
  166.     For example:
  167.     a.  Click on 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\'
  168.     b.  Click 'OK'.
  169.  
  170.         
  171. 9  Select 'Yes',  when prompted to re-start Windows 95*.
  172.

  180. * 4.  VERIFYING INSTALLATION OF THE DRIVER                                 *
  181. ****************************************************************************
  182. This installation verification procedure is specific only to the version of 
  183. the driver and installation file included in this package.  
  184.  
  185. This subsection describes how to verify installation of the software on a 
  186. system where Windows 95* is installed.
  187.  
  188. This installation verification procedure is specific only to the version of 
  189. the driver and installation file included in this package.                                 
  190.  
  191. If the system does not operate reliably or fails to boot when the driver is 
  192. installed, De-install the driver.  Refer to the RELEASE NOTES section for 
  193. more information.
  194.  
  195. In order to verify the installation of the driver:
  196.  
  197. 1.  Open the Control Panel folder.
  198.  
  199. 2.  Invoke the System applet.
  200.  
  201. 3.  Click on the Device Manager tab.
  202.  
  203. 4.  Select the View Devices by Type option.  A list of the devices connected
  204.     to the system will be displayed.
  205.  
  206. 5.  Click on the Hard Disk Controllers record.  One of two cases will be 
  207.     listed.
  208.  
  209.         For CASE 1, there could be up to three instances listed:
  210.         Intel 82371XX PCI Bus Master IDE Controllers
  211.         Primary Bus Master IDE Controller
  212.         Secondary Bus Master IDE Controller
  213.         Go to step 6 for CASE 1.
  214.  
  215.         For CASE 2, there could be up to two instances listed:
  216.         Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
  217.         Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
  218.         Go to step 7 for CASE 3.
  219.  
  220.         NOTE FOR ALL CASES:
  221.         a.  The content of the text strings is dependent on the driver's INF 
  222.             file (named IDEATAPI.INF in the driver's install directory).  
  223.             As a result, the individual controller descriptions may vary
  224.             slightly from what is listed above.  In this case, select
  225.             the closest match.
  226.  
  227.         NOTES FOR CASE 1:  
  228.         b.  XX in 82371XX, shown in CASE 1 may be:    FB, SB, AB.
  229.         C.  Depending on your current system configuration, only one of the 
  230.             instances displayed for the Primary  or the Secondary IDE 
  231.             controllers may be displayed.
  232.         D.  The order in which the individual hard disk controller instances 
  233.             are listed may vary.
  234.  
  235.         NOTE FOR CASE 2:  
  236.         e.  Depending on the current system configuration, only one of the 
  237.             instances may be displayed.
  238.         
  239. 6.  Verify the Intel 82371xx PCI Bus Master IDE Controllers Driver listing.
  240.         NOTES:
  241.         a.  A yellow mark on an instance is NORMAL if no devices are connected 
  242.             to that controller.
  243.  
  244.         B.  If only one instance is present, there should be no yellow 
  245.             warning symbol next to it.
  246.  
  247.     If a yellow warning symbol appears in error (cannot be attributed to 
  248.     either of Steps 6a or 6b), the driver may not be installed and/or working 
  249.     properly.

  253. * 5.  DE-INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE                                           *
  254. ****************************************************************************
  255. This de-installation procedure is specific only to the version of the driver
  256. and installation file included in this package.  
  257.  
  258. This subsection describes how to install the software on a system where 
  259. Windows 95* is installed.
  260.  
  261. NOTE:   Record the location of the Windows 95* directory before 
  262.         de-installing the driver.
  263.  
  264. 1.  Check the System Requirements.  Windows 95* must be fully installed and 
  265.     running on the system prior to running this software.
  266.  
  267. 2.  Close any running applications.
  268.  
  269. 3.  The driver de-installer is stored in an integrated application setup 
  270.     program.  This program is a Windows 95* program that allows the driver 
  271.     files to be INSTALLED or DE-INSTALLED.
  272.     
  273.     Execute the driver setup program.
  274.  
  275.     Run SETUP.EXE.
  276.  
  277. 4.  Click 'Next' on Welcome Screen to read and agree to the license agreement.

  285.     when prompted to do so.

  287.     NOTE:  if the driver is not currently installed on the system, SETUP will
  288.     exit.

  290. 7.  Click 'OK' to restart the system when prompted to do so.
  291.  
  292. 8.  Follow the screen instructions and use default settings to complete the 
  293.     setup when Windows 95* is re-started.
  294.  
  295.     Upon re-start, if Windows 95* if responds with an "Update Device Driver 
  296.     Wizard" dialog box (applies to systems with Windows 95* Version 950B) 
  297.     then follow the UPDATE DEVICE DRIVER WIZARD directions section, otherwise 
  298.     go to the NON-WIZARD directions.
  299.  
  300.     NON-WIZARD directions:
  301.  
  302.         A.  Select 'Windows default driver',
  303.  
  304.             A "New Hardware Found"  dialog box will request a driver 
  305.             location.
  306.  
  307.         B.  Select 'Yes' to restart the system when prompted to do so.
  308.            
  309.             Step C may happen several times.
  310.  
  311.  
  312.     UPDATE DEVICE DRIVER WIZARD directions:
  313.  
  314.         A.  Select 'Next',   
  315.  
  316.             A Wizard dialog box requests to search for drivers.
  317.  
  318.         B.  Select 'Finish',
  319.           
  320.             The Wizard dialog box will indicate it found a driver in the
  321.             <Windows 95* directory>\INF directory.
  322.  
  323.         C.  Select 'Yes' to restart the system when prompted to do so.
  324.  
  325.             Step C may happen several times.
  326.  
  327.         D.  Go to step 4, De-Installation process is complete.

  329. 4.  De-Install process is complete.
  330.

  332. * 6.  TROUBLESHOOTING                                                      *
  333. ****************************************************************************
  334. The following procedure assumes that the hardware/software requirements from
  335. above have been satisfied.  The following procedure also assumes that the
  336. installation of the driver was performed as described in the 'Verifying 
  337. Installation of the Driver' section.  Refer to the 'Release Notes' section
  338. of the document for additional information.
  339.  
  340. COMMON PROBLEMS:
  341. ****************
  342.  
  343. 1.  The device is incompatible with PCI Bus Master IDE operation.
  344.     This is due to the fact that the device does not work properly when
  345.     accessed in a PCI Bus Master IDE fashion.  Contact the device
  346.     manufacturer for more information.
  347.  
  348. 2.  Verify the length of the cables that are being used to connect the IDE or
  349.     ATAPI devices to the primary and secondary PIIX IDE interfaces.  The
  350.     length of these cables from END-TO-END should not exceed 18 inches
  351.     (0.46 m).  Furthermore, the capacitance of the cable should not exceed
  352.     35 pF.
  353.  
  354. 3.  A conflict between the PIIX Bus Master IDE driver and a real-mode ATAPI
  355.     CD-ROM or IDE device driver may occur if the real-mode driver references
  356.     have not been properly removed from the AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS
  357.     files.  This conflict occurs when the PIIX Bus Master IDE driver attempts
  358.     to access the legacy ISA IDE resources to control the PIIX.  
  359.     ALL REFERENCES TO REAL-MODE DRIVERS (IDE or ATAPI) IN THE AUTOEXEC.BAT 
  360.     AND CONFIG.SYS MUST BE REMOVED.
  361.  
  362.  
  363. ****************************************************************************
  364. * 7.  IDENTIFYING THE SOFTWARE VERSION NUMBER                              *
  365. ****************************************************************************
  366. The driver's version can be determined by reading Windows* properties 
  367. embedded in the driver file.
  368.  
  369. The driver version can be obtained by querying the driver file's properties 
  370. under File Manager.
  371.  
  372. NOTE: After installation,  the following driver and related  files

  380. 2.  Select the path containing the driver file.

  415. * 8A.  IDE DEVICES SUPPORTED BY THE DRIVER                                 *
  416. ****************************************************************************
  417. The Intel PIIX Bus Master IDE driver supports only specific ATA/ATAPI device 
  418. types.  The Intel driver should not be installed if the system is equipped 
  419. with any of the non-supported ATAPI devices.  
  420.  
  421. The Intel PIIX Bus Master IDE driver supports the following devices connected 
  422. to the PIIX IDE interface:
  423.     - ATA fixed disk 
  424.     - ATAPI CD-ROM  devices
  425.  
  426. The Intel driver does not support the following types of device in the system:
  427.     - ATAPI Tape Drives
  428.     - ATAPI CD-ROM Changer Drives
  429.     - ATAPI DVD-ROM Drives
  430.     - ATAPI Writeable CD Drives
  431.     - ATA/ATAPI ZIP*, LS-120*, Cartridge, Optical, Removable Media Drives
  432.     - IDE Fixed Disk Drives larger than 8.4GBbytes
  433.  
  434. During initialization, the driver will auto-identify all the devices 
  435. connected to the PIIX IDE interface.  Depending on the capabilities of the 
  436. devices connected to the system, the driver will initialize the PIIX IDE 
  437. interface for bus mastering operation.
  438.  
  439. Only drives identified as bus master capable will be accessed as a bus master;  
  440. all other drives will be accessed in a PIO-only fashion.  In general, 
  441. bus mastering is possible for ATA/ATAPI devices that support the following 
  442. DMA timing modes:
  443.  
  444.     Single Word DMA Mode 2
  445.     Multi-Word DMA Mode 1
  446.     Multi-Word DMA Mode 2
  447.  
  448.     Ultra DMA Mode 0    
  449.     Ultra DMA Mode 1     
  450.     Ultra DMA Mode 2    
  451.  
  452. These devices will be accessed by the driver in either a bus mastering or a
  453. PIO-fashion, depending on the specific transfer conditions.
  454.  
  455. Devices that do not support the DMA timing modes listed above, or whose PIO 
  456. timings are faster than their DMA timings, will be accessed in a PIO-fashion 
  457. ONLY.
  458.  
  459. For more information and a list of tested devices, see the 'Devices Tested'
  460. section of this document.
  461.  
  462.  
  463. ****************************************************************************
  464. * 8B.    APPLICATIONS SUPPORTED BY THE DRIVER                              *
  465. ****************************************************************************
  466.  
  467. Advanced CD-ROM applications/features have not been tested with this driver.  
  468. This driver does not support Microsoft SMART IOCTL API and any mobile IDE 
  469. features on portable PCs (notebooks).  If any problem is encountered, 
  470. de-install the driver. 
  471.  
  472. The driver supports general CD-ROM operations such as: 
  473.     - File transfers
  474.     - Data streaming
  475.     - Audio
  476.  
  477. The driver does not support the following applications:
  478.     - Enhanced CD Applications such as VideoCD*, CDPlus*
  479.     - Multi-CD changers
  480.     - Applications used Microsoft SMART IOCTL API
  481.     - Ontrack Disk Manager and EZ-Driver* API
  482.     - Mobile IDE features on Notebooks
  483.  
  484.  
  485. ****************************************************************************
  486. * 8C.    LARGE IDE FIXED DISK DRIVE (>528MB) SUPPORT BY THE DRIVER         *
  487. ****************************************************************************
  488. Intel recommends that the "Auto" mode of disk recognition should be used in 
  489. most systems' BIOS setup option when installing new disk drives.  Some older 
  490. systems may not support the large disk drives because of BIOS limitations.  
  491. Users are encouraged to contact their system provider for the system or BIOS 
  492. upgrade before installing the Intel driver for large drive support.   
  493.  
  494. Intel PIIX Bus Master IDE driver for Windows 95* supports the following fixed 
  495. disk geometry translation mechanisms. Do not install the Intel driver if the 
  496. system does not support them or the drive is not configured to use them.
  497.     - Standard Cylinder-Head-Sector (CHS) translation in BIOS
  498.     - Logical Block Addressing (LBA) mode
  499.     - BIOS Disk Services INT13h, Function 08h to report the drive geometry 
  500.       parameters 
  501.  
  502. The Intel PIIX Bus Master IDE driver for Windows 95* does not support the 
  503. certain disk geometry translation mechanisms.  The user should use the default 
  504. Microsoft Windows 95* IDE driver if the system uses the following translation 
  505. mechanisms.  
  506.     - All other BIOS translation schemes not supported by 
  507.       the driver.
  508.     - Any software translation mechanisms, such as Ontrack 
  509.       Disk Manager*, EZ-Drive*, or master boot record 
  510.       hooking.
  511.  
  512. ****************************************************************************
  513. * 8D.  RELEASE-SPECIFIC TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION                        *
  514. ****************************************************************************
  515. Verifying the installation of the driver and other generic troubleshooting 
  516. is discussed in the "TROUBLESHOOTING" section above.  This section describes
  517. release-specific troubleshooting.
  518.  
  519. This section contains a list of known problems with certain system
  520. configurations discovered during testing of the driver.  A list of all
  521. storage devices tested with the driver is given below in the "RELEASE
  522. TESTING INFORMATION" section of this document.
  523.  
  524. If the solution given to any of the problems listed below is to de-install 
  525. the driver, follow the de-installation instructions outlined above in the
  526. "DE-INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE" section.
  527.  
  528. In general, if the system fails to operate reliably, the recommendation is
  529. to de-install the PIIX Bus Master driver. 
  530.  
  531. Q1>  Windows 95* doesn't recognize or see CD-ROM drive on the secondary IDE 
  532.      interface after system is restarted.
  533.  
  534. A1>  Some ATAPI CD-ROM drives  may need to be placed on the same cable, as a 
  535.      slave, to a Hard Disk drive, which is configured as a Master.  Below is  
  536.      a list of  some CD-ROM drives that meet this requirement.  Generally, 
  537.      with the exception of  the devices listed below,  the recommended 
  538.      configuration for a single ATAPI CD-ROM drive on a cable is as a Master.

  546. Q2>  There is an Exclamation(!) or Question(?) mark next to the primary or 
  547.      secondary IDE controller instance under Device Manager where devices are 
  548.      connected.   -OR-
  549.  
  550.      The secondary IDE controller instance is missing under

  663.      To workaround the issue, you can create a custom startup configuration 
  664.      that loads CD-ROM real-mode driver. The game will run in exclusive 
  665.      MS-DOS mode using its own MS-DOS configuration.
