  5. This file contains a variety of information you should read before 
  6. installing Ali AGP drivers. This setup program contains two drivers, 
  7. AgartD.VXD and ALiPCIMP.PCI. AgartD.VXD is the graphics address 
  8. remapping table(GART) management for Ali M1541/M1621 chipsets at 
  9. Windows 95. ALiPCIMP.PCI is the PCI miniport driver providing seven 
  10. services to PCI for Ali M1541 and M1621 at Windows 98.

  42. Windows 95:
  43.   1. Install Windows 95 OSR2 or later version.
  44.   2. Upgrade Windows 95 to version OSR2.1 by running USBSUPP.EXE.
  45.      We can get this file from Microsoft (www.microsoft.com).
  46.   3. Install Microsoft DirectX 5.0 or later version.
  47.      We can get this driver from Microsoft too.
  48.   4. Install Ali AGP Driver
  49.    - run this install program.
  50.    - this program will detect the Windows version automatically
  51.      and modify the registry to load the proper driver.
  52.   5. Install VGA driver for Windows 95.

  55.   1. Install Windows 98. 
  56.   2. Install Ali AGP Driver
  57.    - run this install program.
  58.    - this program will detect the Windows version automatically
  59.      and modify the registry to load the proper driver.

  65. Windows 95 and Windows 98:
  66.   1. Open "Control Panel" folder
  67.   2. Invoke "Add\Remove Programs" icon
  68.   3. Choose "Ali AGP Driver 1.20" item 
  69.   4. Click on "Add/Remove" button to remove drivers.

  72. 4. Manual Installation
  73. ----------------------
  74.   After installation, the following drivers are stored as listed.
  75.       <Windows 95 directory>\System\AgartD.VXD
  76.       <Windows 95 directory>\System\ALiPCIMP.PCI
  77.   
  78.   We can backup those files and install drivers manually in the future.

  80. Windows 95:
  81.   1. Copy AgartD.VXD to "<Windows 95 directory>\System\" directory.
  82.   2. Add a key "AGARTD" in the registry:
  83.      KEY:"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\AGARTD"

  85.      NAME:StaticVxD

  88. Windows 98 (M1541 chipset):
  89.   1. Copy ALiPCIMP.PCI to "<Windows 95 directory>\System\" directory.

  111. 5. Verifying Installation of the Driver
  112. -----------------------------------------
  113.   To make sure if the ALI AGP driver is properly installed,
  114.   We need run "Regedit" and check whether the key AGARTD exists in 
  115.   the following path
  116.       "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD"
  117.   for Windows 95 or the NAME/DATA pair 'Path  "ALiPCIMP.PCI" ' exists in
  118.   the following path
  119.       "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\PCI\GARTMINIPORT\154110B9"
  120.       "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\PCI\GARTMINIPORT\162110B9"

  124. 6. Verifying Validation of the AGP Functionality
  125. ------------------------------------------------
  126.   To check whether the AGP mechanism is able to activate, we can try the
  127.   anyone of the following:
  128.   1. A. Open the "Control Panel" folder
  129.      b. Invoke "Direct X" icon
  130.      c. Click on "Direct Draw" tab 
  131.      d. Check if the video memory is more than the VGA card's memory.
  132.         If it is, that means the AGP can be activated properly.
  133.      If the "Direct X" icon doesn't exist, please get DirectX 5.0 SDK from 
  134.      http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/directx/dxf/sdk5.0/default.htm (
  135.      idx5sdk.exe or idx5sdkm.exe). After unpacking, run setup.exe in the 
  136.      root directory to start the SDK setup. Select "DirectX runtime only" 
  137.      from the Setup Type selection dialog box.
  138.   
  139.   2. Run ddtest.exe in the previous DirectX 5.0 SDK unpacking_dir\sdk\bin 
  140.      directory. Click the "Connect" button. Check if the "Total Vmem" is
  141.      more than the VGA card's memory. 
  142.   
  143.   3. Get the debug or retail versions of the DirectX 5 runtime from previous
  144.      WWW site (idx5dbg.exe or idx5rdst.exe). Run dxtool.exe in the 
  145.      unpacking_dir\debug\directx or unpacking_dir\redist\directx. Check the 
  146.      value of "DirectDraw\Primary Display Driver\Total Video Memory".

  149. 7. Identifying the Drivers Version Number
  150. -----------------------------------------
  151.   The version of the drivers can be obtained by querying the driver file's
  152.   properties under File Manager.

  154.   After installation, the following driver are stored as listed.
  155.     <Windows directory>\System\AgartD.VXD
  156.     <Windows directory>\System\ALiPCIMP.PCI
  157.   
  158.   1. Invoke the "Explorer" application.
  159.   2. Select the driver file.
  160.   3. Open the "File" menu.
  161.   4. Click on the "Properties" item.
  162.   5. Click on the "Version" tab.
  163.   6. The driver's version should be listed in the "File version" or "Product 
  164.      Version".

  169.   1. Check the chipset version and use hardware flush for M1541 
  170.      version E chipset.
  171.   2. Solve the compatibility problem of MGA G100 AGP card with 
  172.      M1541 chipset.
  173.   3. If the chipset doesn't support AGP mechanism or belong to 
  174.      Ali then this driver will do nothing.
  175.   4. Impove the performance of 3DLabs permedia2 AGP card.
  176.   5. Remain the Windows98 default AGP miniport driver when we 
  177.      uninstall Ali AGP driver.
