  36.     INSTALLING THE WINDOWS NT DRIVER

  39. If you are not installing from the Imagine 2 CD-ROM, you should make
  40. a backup of your diskette before installing.
  41.   Example:  diskcopy a: a:
  42.  
  43. * NOTE * This driver will not install correctly from a Networked or
  44.          Local hard drive. If the driver was downloaded from one of
  45.          Number Nine's on-line services, place the files on a high-
  46.          density 3.5" floppy diskette before installing. 
  47.  
  48.  
  49. Steps for installing the Windows NT driver
  50. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  51.  
  52.  1.  Start Windows NT in VGA Mode by selecting the appropriate choice from
  53.      the NT Boot Menu.
  54.  
  55.  2.  Open the Main Group folder and double click or select the Control Panel.
  56.  
  57.  3.  Double Click or select the Display Icon.
  58.  
  59.  4.  Click or select the "Change Display Type" button.
  60.  
  61.  5.  Click or select the "Change" button.
  62.  
  63.  6.  Click or select the "Other" button.
  64.  
  65.  7.  You will be prompted to "Insert the manufacturer's installation disk
  66.      into the drive selected below and choose OK"
  67.  
  68.  8.  If you are installing from the Imagine 2 CD-ROM, change the installation
  69.      disk setting to the \WINNT35\ subdirectory on the CD-ROM.  (i.e. if your
  70.      CD-ROM is drive D:, then you should type D:\WINNT35\ )
  71.  
  72.      If you are installing from a floppy disk, place the Number Nine
  73.      Imagine 128 Series 2 Windows NT v3.5x Display Driver v3.102.16 Diskette
  74.      in Drive A: and click or select the OK button.
  75.  
  76.  9.  "#9 Imagine 128 ver. 2" will be highlighted, click or select the Install
  77.      button. 
  78.  
  79. 10.  You will receive the message "This operation will change your system
  80.      configuration.  Do you want to proceed anyway?" - Click or select YES.
  81.  
  82. 11.  You will now be prompted to "Please enter the full path to the
  83.      #9 Imagine 128 ver.2 display driver files".
  84.  
  85.      If you are installing from the Imagine 2 CD-ROM, make sure that the
  86.      path is set to the \WINNT35 subdirectory on the CD-ROM.  (i.e. if your
  87.      CD-ROM is drive D:, then you should select D:\WINNT35\ )  If the path is
  88.      set correctly, then click or select the Continue button.
  89.  
  90.      If you are installing from a floppy disk, make sure the path reads A:\
  91.      and the installation diskette is in the "A" drive, then click or select
  92.      the Continue button.
  93.  
  94. 12.  If you are upgrading from an earlier driver release, you must choose
  95.      New when prompted to confirm replacement of the current driver.  The
  96.      default option for this message box is to keep the current driver, so
  97.      be sure to click the New button to replace your older driver.
  98.  
  99. 13.  When installation is complete, you will receive the message "The drivers
  100.      were successfully installed."  Click or select the OK button.
  101.  
  102. 14.  A message will state that the driver could not be started dynamically.
  103.      Please restart Windows NT to run with the new driver.  Click or select
  104.      the OK button.
  105.  
  106. 15.  A dialog box will appear with "Your display settings have changed.
  107.      You will need to exit and restart Windows NT so that the new settings
  108.      can take effect.  " Remove the diskette from the "A" drive then click 
  109.      or select RESTART NOW.
  110.  
  111. 16.  After the system restarts, you will receive the following message:
  112.      "Invalid Display Settings:  A new graphics driver has been installed.
  113.      The default display resolution has been temporarily used by the system.
  114.      Use the Display Option in the Windows NT Control Panel to select your
  115.      preferred display resolution."  Click or select OK.
  116.  
  117. 17.  If the Display Settings page is not visible, open the Main folder and
  118.      double click or select the Control Panel.
  119.  
  120. 18.  Double click or select the Display icon.
  121.  
  122. 19.  Select the desired resolution (desktop area), color depth (palette),
  123.      and refresh rate (frequency). Choose "LIST MODES" to see a list of
  124.      valid display modes or refer to the "Supported Resolutions" section
  125.      of this document for a list of driver supported modes.
  126.

  128.     * NOTE * BE SURE TO TEST THE SELECTED MODE BEFORE RESTARTING WINDOWS NT.
  129.              IF YOUR MONITOR DOES NOT SUPPORT YOUR CURRENT SELECTION, THE
  130.              SYSTEM WILL RETURN WITH A BLANK SCREEN AND MONITOR DAMAGE MAY
  131.              RESULT.  THE TEST WILL ONLY SET THE MODE FOR 5 SECONDS AND
  132.              RETURN TO ALLOW YOU TO SELECT ANOTHER IF THE FIRST IS NOT
  133.              SUPPORTED.  IF THE TEST BITMAP DISPLAYS PROPERLY, THE MONITOR
  134.              IS CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING THE SELECTED RESOLUTION AND VERTICAL
  135.              REFRESH RATE.

  138.     * NOTE * If the system fails to restart or is unable to locate the file
  139.              N9I128V2.SYS, try changing the PCI interrupt setting in the
  140.              system CMOS BIOS.  An IRQ setting will be assigned to the PCI
  141.              slot that the IMAGINE 128 Series 2 card is in.  In some cases,
  142.              the interrupt assigned to the PCI slot may cause the driver
  143.              to fail when loading.  Each computer has a different CMOS setup
  144.              and you will need to check the owner's manual for your system
  145.              motherboard.

  247.     CHANGING THE VERTICAL REFRESH RATE

  250.   1. From the Main Folder, double click or select Control Panel
  251.  
  252.   2. Double click or select the Display Icon. 
  253.  
  254.   3. Click on or select the Refresh Frequency pull down box and select
  255.      the refresh rate you desire.
  256.  
  257.   4. *IMPORTANT* Click the Test button to test the display.
  258.      
  259.      * NOTE * BE SURE TO TEST THE SELECTED MODE BEFORE RESTARTING WINDOWS NT.

  275.     HARDWARE ACCELERATION FOR 3D
  276. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  277.  
  278. The Imagine 128 Series 2 and 2e support accelerated 3D, both 16-bit and 32-bit
  279. Z-Buffering, and Double Buffering for smooth redraws of 3D objects. Like all
  280. true 3D accelerator cards, this requires large amounts of on-board memory.
  281.  
  282. 3D acceleration on 4MB versions of the Imagine Series 2 is only supported at
  283. resolutions up to 800x600 @ 65k colors, or 640x480 @ 16.8M colors.
  284. On the 8MB version of the Imagine Series 2, 3D acceleration is supported at
  285. resolutions up to 1152x864 @ 65k colors, and up to 800x600 @ 16.8M colors.
  286.  
  287. At higher resolutions, 3D operations are performed in software, making them
  288. much slower.

  307. Even though you may have just received your Number Nine software, 
  308. newer versions may be available. Free upgrades are provided to 
  309. all Number Nine customers via the Number Nine Bulletin Board 
  310. System (BBS), Internet World Wide Web (WWW) and FTP, and CompuServe
  311. For more information on these services, see sections V through VIII
  312. of this document.

  314. To see if you have the latest version, compare the version number
  315. of your software (on the label of the provided diskette or in the
  316. text file 9NTVERS.TXT included with the driver) with the version
  317. number of the software on the BBS, WWW/FTP, or CompuServe.

  340. The latest driver updates can be found in each product's file 
  341. area, and files of general interest (shareware, etc.) can be

  343. for technical questions about Number Nine products or about 
  344. the BBS in general.  A complete listing of available files can 
  345. be downloaded by invoking the "Download List of Files" command 
  346. from any file library menu.

  348. On the US BBS, RIP graphics are supported, and a RIP compatible 
  349. terminal program is available in the General library 
  350. (RIPTM154.ZIP).

  352. Many files are self-extracting, but some files will require the 
  353. latest version of PKUNZIP to decompress.  PKUNZIP is available 
  354. in the General library (filename PKZ204G.EXE), and can also be 
  355. found on most on-line services such as CompuServe and America 
  356. On-line.

  363. Number Nine's BBS now supports the Worldgroup Windows-based BBS client.
