  72. The installation is covered in the "online.doc" file. 
  73. You can view this file with WordPad.
  74.  
  75. The installation process can be customized by modifying the "mga.ini"
  76. file on the diskette. Examples of customization options include:
  77. default installation path, default driver performance switches,
  78. default schemes, etc. The file is self-documented. This type of 
  79. customization should be carried out by advanced users only.

  81. Registry Settings
  82. -----------------

  84. PowerDesk settings are kept in the Windows 95 registry, under the keys:
  85.  
  86. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MATROX\MGA and 
  87. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MATROX\QUICKACCESS

  89. Notes, Problems, and Limitations
  90. --------------------------------
  91.  
  92. - Microsoft MGA Ultima/Impression driver
  93.  
  94.   The Microsoft MGA Ultima/Impression driver v.1.0 does not have, or support,
  95.   the PowerDesk enhancements. In the "Adapter Type" list, the MGA driver is
  96.   called the "Matrox MGA Ultima/Impression", while the PowerDesk one is
  97.   called "Matrox MGA PowerDesk".
  98.   
  99. - Windows 95 "display.txt" file
  100.  
  101.   Windows 95 comes with a readme file called "display.txt" containing 
  102.   valuable information related to display adapters.
  103.   Note that the remarks about the Matrox MGA adapters refer to the Microsoft
  104.   MGA Ultima/Impression driver, not to your MGA PowerDesk driver.
  105.  
  106. - Adobe Type Manager limitation
  107.  
  108.   When Adobe Type Manager is installed, you cannot run the driver if the
  109.   "Advanced Graphics Acceleration Settings" is set to none. Note that ATM 
  110.   is installed as part of Adobe Acrobat Reader. This is an Adobe problem
  111.   documented in the Windows 95 "display.txt" file.
  112.  
  113. - Windows 95 SuperVGA monitors not supported
  114.  
  115.   Windows 95 provides "Standard monitor types". This includes various 
  116.   SuperVGA monitors supporting resolutions from 800 X 600 to 1600 X 1200. 
  117.   These monitor types do not specify refresh rate ranges, which causes 
  118.   our driver to reject them and work as if there is no monitor selected. 
  119.   In this case, the driver will output resolutions up to 1600 X 1200, 
  120.   which might not be supported by your actual monitor. Therefore the 
  121.   SuperVGA monitor types SHOULD NOT BE USED WITH THE MGA POWERDESK DRIVER.
  122.   Instead, try to find your specific monitor name (or type) in the Windows 95
  123.   list, or use one of the generic monitors from the MGA Monitor Program.
  124.  
  125. - Monitor Refresh rates with a virtual desktop
  126.  
  127.   When working with a virtual desktop, the refresh rate used for the 
  128.   Windows 95 monitor will be derived from the virtual desktop resolution
  129.   ("Desktop area") rather than from the display resolution ("Display
  130.   area"). This typically will result in an inferior refresh rate, and if 
  131.   the virtual desktop resolution is not supported by your monitor 
  132.   (e.g. 1600 X 1200), the default refresh rate of only 60 Hz will be used.
  133.  
  134.   This limitation does not occur when using the Matrox MGA Monitor Program,
  135.   where the refresh rates are taken from the display resolution.
  136.  
  137. - Monitors in interlaced mode
  138.  
  139.   Some old monitors such as the IBM 8514 and the NEC 3D do not support non-
  140.   interlaced mode in all resolutions. The MGA driver does not properly
  141.   handle interlaced mode under the Windows 95 monitor mechanism, so if you
  142.   own one of these monitors, please use the MGA Monitor Program.
  143.  
  144. - MGA Rev.1 boards, Impression Plus AT-Bus
  145.     
  146.   If you have a MGA Rev.1 board or an Impression Plus AT-Bus, you MUST use
  147.   the RAMBIOS.SYS program (or some other form of shadow BIOS) when the MGA
  148.   board is configured with the on-board VGA enabled, in a single-screen
  149.   configuration, at the default base address of AC000. The RAMBIOS.SYS
  150.   utility must be loaded through the CONFIG.SYS file (CONFIG.SYS file must
  151.   contain the line: device=c:\Matrox\MGA\RAMBIOS.SYS).
  152.   
  153. - MGA ULTIMA/1/A Users
  154.  
  155.   If you have a MGA-ULT/1/A board (1Mb VRAM), you must use the Matrox Monitor 
  156.   Selection program rather than the Windows 95 monitor selection. Furthermore, 
  157.   you must use the special ULTIMA1A.MON Monitor file, located in the 
  158.   \Matrox\MGA\MON directory. Simply copy this file over the MGA.MON file, then 
  159.   call the Matrox Monitor Program to select a monitor from that list.
  160.  
  161. - Repaint problems with PanLOCK
  162.  
  163.   We have noted erratic window repainting problems with the PanLOCK feature.
  164.   The problem is related to Windows main message queue, and happens more
  165.   easily with the "window dragging" feature of the Win95 Plus Pack. It has 
  166.   been seen so far in Lotus 4, Access and AMIPro. There is no workaround
  167.   other than to avoid using PanLOCK.
  168.  
  169. - Microsoft DirectDraw
  170.  
  171.   The MGA DirectDraw driver is included with this release. It provides 
  172.   the necessary hooks to accelerate upcomming DirectX games.
  173.  
  174. - MGA ULTIMA/PCI
  175.  
  176.   If you have a PCI based computer and are experiencing system lock-ups on the 
  177.   first boot after installing your PCI display adapter, in "fail-safe boot", or 
  178.   when your display is set to 640x480, 16 colors, then you should copy a 
  179.   special version of the Windows 95 VGA display driver.  It works around a 
  180.   compatibility problem between the Intel "Triton" PCI controller and the 
  181.   MGA ULTIMA/PCI. The file is located in \DRIVERS\DISPLAY\VGA on the Microsoft 
  182.   Windows 95 CD-ROM.  Just copy this version of VGA.DRV over the version already 
  183.   in your Windows\system directory.  
  184.  
  185. - DirectDraw and Automatic Power Management
  186.  
  187.   As stated in "Microsoft DirectX release Notes" dated September 30, 1995, A 
  188.   DirectDraw game might be unable to restore properly if it is suspended 
  189.   by Automatic Power Management utilities.

  194.   file is included on your Matrox floppy disk, and installed in your 
  195.   \Matrox\MGA folder.
