  6. Product Description
  7. -------------------
  8.  
  9. The MGA Millennium/Mystique OS/2 PM driver supports 8-bit (256 colors), 16-bit
  10. (64K colors), and 24- and 32-bit (16M colors) display modes under OS/2 2.11 and
  11. 3.0 (Warp), in resolutions ranging from 640 x 480 to 1800 x 1440.

  14. Driver Installation
  15. -------------------
  16.  
  17. To install the software, follow the procedure below:
  18.  
  19.    1. If you have previously configured OS/2 for another graphics card, then
  20.       you should uninstall the drivers for that card.  Be sure that OS/2 will
  21.       start up in VGA mode before installing the MGA Millennium/Mystique
  22.       driver.
  23.  
  24.    2. If you downloaded the driver from the Matrox BBS, use the DOS LABEL
  25.       command to label your floppy as OS2.
  26.  
  27.    3. Using the Command Prompts folder of OS/2, open an OS/2 Window or Full
  28.       Screen session.
  29.  
  30.    4. Insert the driver disk in a floppy drive (if you are installing from
  31.       the floppy disk) or insert the CD-ROM in its drive bay.
  32.  
  33.    5. Make the CD-ROM or floppy disk the active drive and type:
  34.  
  35.       "SRCPATH\INSTALL",
  36.  
  37.       where SRCPATH is the path which contains the MGA PM drivers.
  38.  
  39.       Examples:
  40.  
  41.       A:\INSTALL     (if installing from a diskette with OS/2 only)
  42.       A:\OS2\INSTALL (if installing from diskette with OS/2 and NT)
  43.       D:\OS2\INSTALL (if installing from a CD-ROM)
  44.  
  45.       Note: if you install this driver to a Warp System, you may run
  46.  
  47.       \INSTALL /U       for all but Japanese OS/2
  48.         or
  49.       \INSTALL /UJ      for Japanese OS/2
  50.  
  51.       and everything will be installed without any further input from the
  52.       user (primary, secondary selection, driver selection, and source
  53.       disk/path selection).
  54.  
  55.    6. You will see a dialog box in which you can select the Primary Display.
  56.       Choose "Matrox MGA Millennium/Mystique Series".  You may have to change
  57.       the source drive if you are not installing from drive A.
  58.  
  59.    7. The installation program will then proceed with the installation.  When
  60.       it is complete, you will have to shut down your system in order for the
  61.       MGA driver to take effect.
  62.  
  63. If you are installing this driver for the first time, OS/2 will restart in
  64. Matrox default MGA resolution (640 x 480 x 16M).  You may wish to select your
  65. monitor and/or a different resolution before shutting down.  To do this, use
  66. the MGA Settings notebook, as explained in the next section.
  67.  
  68. Note:  If you are using Selective Install in OS/2 Warp, the MGA
  69. Millennium/Mystique driver shows up as "Other."

  72. Driver Configuration
  73. --------------------

  75. To change the driver monitor configuration or mode (resolution or pixel depth),
  76. use the following procedure:
  77.  
  78.    1. Double-click on the MGA Settings icon on the desktop.
  79.  
  80.    2. Select the Monitor tab and either select Display Data Channel (if
  81.       available) or choose your monitor from the list provided.
  82.  
  83.    3. Select the Resolution tab and choose the resolution/pixel depth.
  84.  
  85. You will need to reboot the system to see the change take effect.

  88. CID Installation
  89. ----------------

  91. Please refer to the README.CID file on the driver disk for information
  92. concerning CID installation.

  96. Uninstalling the Driver
  97. -----------------------
  98.  
  99. The Matrox UNINSTAL command file makes use of the OS/2 DSPINSTL.EXE program
  100. to switch the display driver from MGA mode back to VGA mode, as shown in the
  101. following procedure:
  102.  
  103.    1. Open an OS/2 Text Window (or Full Screen) session.
  104.  
  105.    2. Enter:  CD \MGA\OS2
  106.  
  107.       UNINSTAL
  108.       or
  109.       UNINSTAL CLEAN (to also delete the Matrox files from your hard disk)
  110.  
  111.    3. Once the MGA driver has been uninstalled, the DSPINSTL utility will
  112.       launch.  Select Primary Display, then choose the driver you require (for
  113.       example, VGA).
  114.  
  115. You will need to reboot the system to see the change take effect.
  116.  
  117. Note:  With Warp, there are two additional ways to switch the driver from MGA
  118. mode to VGA mode:
  119.  
  120.   1. You can access a menu by pressing Alt+F1 when the OS/2 logo appears
  121.      in the upper left corner of the screen during the bootup process.
  122.      This menu will allow you to change the driver to VGA by selecting
  123.      the appropriate option.
  124.  
  125.   2. You can also change the driver to VGA by running the following program
  126.      in an OS/2 window or full screen session:
  127.  
  128.               SETVGA

  130. Monitor Customization using Matrox's MGA Settings Notebook
  131. ----------------------------------------------------------
  132.  
  133. The OS/2 Millennium/Mystique driver supports VESA DDC-2B compliant monitors.
  134.  
  135. If your monitor is not detected as DDC compliant, the driver will take the
  136. "Unknown Monitor" hardcoded timings, which assume that you have a monitor
  137. supporting all resolutions available on your board at a 60Hz refresh rate
  138. (non-interlaced).
  139.  
  140. If you have a monitor that is capable of refresh rates higher than 60Hz, you
  141. can perform monitor file customization with the help of the MGA settings
  142. notebook.  This program creates a file called MGA.INF, which contains the
  143. appropriate video parameters for your monitor.  The MGA.INF file is read by the
  144. MGA display driver when OS/2 boots.
  145.  
  146. The MGA settings notebook is located in the System Setup folder, described
  147. below.
  148.  
  149. You must shut down OS/2 and reboot your computer for the changes to take
  150. effect.
  151.  
  152. Note:  The timing information in MGA.INF overrides the timing info returned by
  153. DDC compliant monitors.  If you are using a DDC compliant monitor, and you do
  154. not wish to override the monitor's timing info, then check the "Use Data
  155. Display Channel (DDC)" box.

  158. Driver configuration using the MGA settings notebook
  159. ----------------------------------------------------
  160.  
  161. Advanced configuration of the MGA driver can be performed through the MGA
  162. settings notebook, located in the System Setup folder and shadowed on the
  163. desktop.
  164.  
  165. Fonts page:
  166.  
  167.    You may change font settings for the current resolution, and they will be
  168.    remembered if you switch resolutions.  You may change font resolution and
  169.    system font size using the Fonts page.  To change the default AVIO font,
  170.    open an OS/2 or DOS Window, select Font Size from the system menu, select
  171.    the desired font, and click the Save button.  Your selection will be stored
  172.    when you exit the MGA settings notebook.
  173.  
  174.    Font resolution affects your desktop icon font.  The system font is used
  175.    for window titles and menus and also affects window sizes.

  191. Advanced page:
  192.  
  193. 1. Grayscale driver switch
  194.  
  195.    Owners of the Millennium PowerDoc Edition may enable the grayscale driver
  196.    switch, which defines whether 8 bits per pixel should be in 256 colors or
  197.    256 gray shades.
  198.  
  199. 2. DIVE switch
  200.  
  201.    Due to an OS/2 problem in 32 bpp, the Warp Digital Video player image
  202.    may be shifted to the left.  24 bpp may trap under certain conditions.
  203.  
  204.    The MGA settings notebook has a switch to ensure DIVE is always enabled in
  205.    24 and 32bpp.  Note that when the box is not checked, DIVE will still be
  206.    used in some cases where no problems were found to occur with OS/2 FixPak
  207.    17 installed.
  208.  
  209. 3. EnDIVE switch
  210.  
  211.    If you wish to enable/disable EnDIVE support, use the EnDIVE switch.
  212.  
  213.  
  214. For all changes you make with the MGA setttings notebook, except for hot key
  215. changes, you must reboot your computer to see the changes take effect.

  218. Driver configuration using MGACONF.CMD
  219. --------------------------------------
  220.  
  221. 1. Cursor Vsync
  222.  
  223.    The cursor may exhibit some "noise" when an application changes the color
  224.    palette.  This switch forces to wait for a Vsync before changing the
  225.    palette.  The drawback is a loss of speed when changing the palette.  Some
  226.    animated application requires fast changing palette.  This switch applies
  227.    only to 8 bpp.  The problem occurs only on the Millennium card, not the
  228.    Mystique card.

  235. 2. Color cursor

  304. KNOWN BUGS AND LIMITATIONS
  305. --------------------------
  306.  
  307. The following bugs and limitations are present in this release of the
  308. driver:
  309.  
  310.  When using the DSPINSTL program to reconfigure your MGA driver, the program
  311.   states that VGA is the current driver.  This is because the DSPINSTL program
  312.   included with OS/2 does not correctly identify the MGA Millennium or
  313.   Mystique.
  314.  
  315.  The MGA PowerDesk Windows drivers should NOT be used in a Win-OS/2 full
  316.   screen session.  The results will be highly unpredictable.  If the MGA
  317.   windows driver features are absolutely needed, then a dual-boot configuration
  318.   must be used.  When booting from DOS, the PowerDesk Windows driver features
  319.   are fully supported.
  320.  
  321.  The driver does not work with Mayo Clinic Family Health Book (Windows app.)
  322.   in seamless Windows at 16bpp (64K colors).  If you need to run this
  323.   application, please run it in Win-OS/2 fullscreen instead or change the
  324.   colors to 256 or 16M.
  325.  
  326.  The mouse pointer may jump while panning.
  327.  
  328.  The MGA settings notebook may cause a system error if running when the system
  329.   is shut down.  Close the notebook before shutting down.
  330.  
  331.  It is necessary to shut down all Win-OS/2 sessions prior to installing the
  332.   driver.  Make sure the "Fast load" option in Win-OS/2 Setup (in the System
  333.   Setup folder) is not checked, and close Win-OS/2 Setup prior to install.
  334.   Otherwise, required Win-OS/2 files will not be copied, and install will fail.
  335.  
  336.  Using the large OS/2 system font on OS/2 2.11 causes some text in the MGA
  337.   settings notebook to be cut off.  This is due to an OS/2 bug in the font
  338.   spacing.
  339.
