  7. The files located in the \\drvlib\print\decmon directory of this 
  8. Windows NT (TM) V3.5 distribution are intended to enable you 
  9. to quickly and simply soft-load and remote-configure Digital's 
  10. PrintServer 17, PrintServer 20, and PrintServer 32 printers.

  12. This README.TXT file answers four questions:

  22. 1-WHAT IS SOFT LOADING AND WHY WOULD I WANT TO DO IT?

  24. Digital's PrintServer Printers are extremely capable network printers, 
  25. ranging in speed from 17 PPM to 32 PPM, with monthly duty cycles ranging 
  26. from 70,000 pages per month to 150,000 pages per month. PrintServer 
  27. Printers are completely software driven; this makes them extremely 
  28. flexible and durable resources. When you plug your new PrintServer 
  29. Printer into your ethernet network and turn it on, it issues a load 
  30. request to any system or host on the network that is capable of loading 
  31. it and has been configured to load it.

  35. 2-HOW DO I CONFIGURE MY NT SYSTEM TO SOFT LOAD?
  36. -----------------------------------------------
  37. In order to make your Windows NT system capable of soft-loading one or 
  38. more PrintServer Printers, (as many as you'd like to load) you must 
  39. configure Print Manager parameters appropriately:
  40.  
  41.         -Select or create a PrintServer Printer in Print Manager 
  42.  
  43.         -Choose the Configure option of Print Manager's 
  44.          Properties--->Settings--->Options dialogue, or if this is a
  45.          new printer, choose Create--->Settings--->Options--->Configure. 
  46.  
  47.         -Enter the PrintServer Printer's Hardware address, and 
  48.          select the "Enable Soft Loading & Configuration" feature.
  49.  
  50.         -Fill in the rest of the network configuration information
  51.          on this dialogue and press OK when complete.
  52.  
  53.         -Place your Windows NT V3.5 installation media in a system drive,
  54.          and the soft-load files will be copied to your Windows NT 
  55.          system.

  57.         -Refer to online help (DECPSMON.HLP) for more information at any 
  58.          time.

  61. 3-WHAT ARE THE FILES HERE IN \\drvlib\print\decmon USED FOR?
  62. ------------------------------------------------------------
  63. The \\drvlib\print\decmon\prntsrvr.dat is a compressed multi-file
  64. archive, containing Digital PrintServer Printer soft-loading components.
  65. These components are extracted by means of Print Manager menu options 
  66. described above, and expanded, then placed in the \\win32app\decpsmon
  67. directory of your Windows NT system disk partition.
  68.  
  69. The files take up approximately six megabytes compressed on the
  70. Windows NT distribution in the PRNTSRVR.DAT file format, and they expand
  71. to eight megabytes at installation. These files are binary executable 
  72. files that run on the PrintServer Printer itself, and text and 
  73. configuration files that are used by the printer during the loading 
  74. process.

  140. To reduce the size required after installing the load files:
  141.  
  142.         The files that have extensions .dut, .eng, .fre, .ger, .ita,
  143.         .nor, .por, .spa, and .swe are language specific front panel
  144.         files. You can delete any of these that are for a language you
  145.         will not be choosing. They save you 50K bytes each.
  146.  
  147.         The languages supported by these files are as follows:

  162.         The bulk of your space savings will occur when choosing which of
  163.         ps.exe (approximately 1 megabyte), ps17.exe (approximately 3 
  164.         megabytes), and ps17min.exe (approximately 2 megabytes) to 
  165.         delete.  DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING ELSE!

  167.         A PrintServer 17 Printer with 8 megabytes of memory 
  168.         requires ps17min.exe but does not need ps17.exe or ps.exe.
  169.  
  170.         A PrintServer 17 Printer with 16 megabytes of memory
  171.         requires ps17.exe but does not need ps17min.exe or ps.exe.
  172.  
  173.         A PrintServer 20 Printer requires ps.exe but does not need 
  174.         ps17.exe or ps17min.exe.
  175.  
  176.         A PrintServer 32 Printer requires ps.exe but does not need 
  177.         ps17.exe or ps17min.exe.

  179.         When in doubt, DON'T DELETE!

  181.         If you think you have deleted a file you actually need, you can 
  182.         easily restore or refresh the files at any time by selecting a 
  183.     Printer in the Print Manager that is connected to a PrintServer 
  184.         port and then selecting:
