SHAREWARE AND LICENSE - WHAT THEY MEAN
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
When you "buy" a software package you will get several things,
such as diskettes, the manuals, the shrink wrap, etc. These are
merely the visible parts of your purchase; what you're actually
paying for is a LICENSE to use the software.
That's an important distinction; you DO NOT buy the software it-
self. Ownership of the software, and all rights that come with
ownership, remain with the copyright holder.
We're no different. We reserve all rights with respect to owner-
ship, distribution and publication of any of our software and/or
related materials.
These products are also what is known as "shareware". Shareware
is software that is released on a "try-before-you-buy" basis. We
decided that, instead of spending a lot of money on marketing and
packaging, we would put our products out in the marketplace and
rely on the shareware distribution system.
To get a license to use our product, you REGISTER it by paying us
-- NOT necessarily the source you got the package from! -- a fee.
The main feature of our license agreement is our committment to
provide registered users with proactive support in the event of a
suspected virus attack. We'll give you active assistance via E-
Mail or by phone (you must be willing to accept collect charges
if you want us to call you).

HOME USE - REGISTRATION NOT REQUIRED
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
The ARF anti-virus package was actually written with the profes-
sional user in mind. These utilities require little maintenance;
INJECTed files check themselves automatically, ARFMAIN is launched
into memory from the CONFIG.SYS file, and PROBOOT checks the main
boot record (MBR) automatically at bootup. Your employees and co-
workers don't have to be computer whizzes; all they have to do is
alert the IS Manager or System Administrator if our software rep-
orts a problem.
Professional users may be reluctant to buy this product because it
doesn't have the glitzy packaging, the famous name on the package,
and large price tag. (Go figure on that last one, but it's true!)
But we believe that if we can get this product into as many hands
as possible, everyone -- including professional users -- will
learn how good it is; so we've made this decision ...
A PRIVATE HOME USER IS NOT REQUIRED TO SEND IN A REGISTRA-
TION FEE TO USE THE PROGRAMS CONTAINED IN THIS PACKAGE,
SUBJECT TO RESTRICTIONS LISTED ELSEWHERE IN THIS DOCUMENT
That right, free lunch. If you are a private home user, you can
use these programs to your heart's content and never pay us a
dime. Private home users are granted a license to unlimited
PERSONAL use at no charge. Give copies to all of the neighbors!
All we ask in return is that you let your workplace know about our
package. After a 30-day free trial period, the boss'll have the
option of registering the product, or discontinuing its use.
Just so there is no mistake, OUR definition applies ...
REGISTER.DOC (cont) page 3
A "PRIVATE HOME USER" IS A PERSON WHO USES THESE PROGRAMS
AT HIS/HER PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE, ON A COMPUTER THAT WAS
PURCHASED AND PAID FOR BY THEM PERSONALLY, AND THE PURCHASE
OF WHICH WOULD NOT QUALIFY AS A BUSINESS-RELATED EXPENSE
OR DEDUCTION UNDER US TAX LAWS.
This definition allows you bring work home from the office and
still be considered a "private home user".
Just because you don't have to pay us doesn't mean you can't.
First, a registered user receives the latest copy of our software
on a guaranteed-clean system recovery disk (and that alone is well
worth the price).
There's another important benefit (also worth the price): regist-
ered users have access to full support in the event of a suspected
virus attack. While we'll certainly help unregistered users if we
can, and we'll certainly answer questions about our products and
their use, we cannot provide or guarantee support to unregistered
users. Let's reiterate:
REGISTERED USERS RECEIVE:
1 - A GUARANTEED-CLEAN COPY OF OUR UTILITIES ON DISK
2 - FULL SUPPORT AS DESCRIBED IN THIS DOCUMENT IN THE
EVENT OF A SUSPECTED VIRUS ATTACK
Active support includes exchanging files via e-mail, phone consu-
lation (you pay for the call), and consultation via standard US
Snail Mail (if preferred ... but why?).
The only limiting factors are that we cannot guarantee any results
(no data recovery service can do that), and we reserve the right
REGISTER.DOC (cont) page 3
to terminate support for a given problem if, at our discretion, it
appears that the problem cannot be resolved by E-Mail or phone, or
is clearly not being caused by a virus.
The license fee for private home users is $25.00 per calendar year
plus $10 for shipping and handling if you require a new disk cont-
aining the latest copy of our products. (You might want to renew
your registration at the end of a calendar year, and won't need a
new disk; that's why we word it that way.)
Or, if you're looking for a deal, you can register for five (5)
calendar years with full support (including update disks as
required - and WE pay shipping and handling) for $100.
YOU CAN REGISTER THIS PRODUCT TWO DIFFERENT WAYS:
1 - $25 PER CALENDAR YEAR + $10 S/H IF A DISK IS REQUIRED
2 - $100 FLAT FEE FOR FIVE CALENDAR YEARS, ALL UPDATES
INCLUDED (WE PAY S/H).
Just to cover the legalities, update disks will be made available
by us at our discretion; we do not state, nor even imply, that
we will follow any kind of a fixed schedule, and/or produce a
fixed or certain number of disks per year. We DO warrant that we
will produce updates, and will make those updates available on-
line and via disk to registered users, as our research indicates
that such an update would be advisable.
It's hard to predict how often we'd update (the people who write
viruses don't exactly follow a fixed schedule), but for example,
we would do so if we received word of a new type of virus that
needed special treatment.
The licensing agreement is non-transferable and will only apply to
the original purchaser.

PROFESSIONAL USE - REGISTRATION *IS* REQUIRED
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Why do we require a fee for professional use? Simple; there's a
world of difference between the casual home user and someone who
uses their PC professionally.
With the professional user, we're more likely to have to provide
consultation for cleanup after an attack, and that consultation is
likely to be more involved and time-intensive. (Not to mention
more URGENT; downtime can be expensive for a professional user!)
For that and other reasons, we require a registration fee for any
professional use; and for our purposes,
A "PROFESSIONAL USER" IS DEFINED AS ANYONE WHO DOESN'T MEET
OUR DEFINITION OF A "PRIVATE HOME USER" AS STATED ABOVE.
"Professional use" would include (but is not limited to) use in or
by business, government, industry, or educators.
Professional users are allowed to use this software for a period
not to exceed thirty days in order to evaluate its usefulness.
After 30 days a professional user must either register the product
or discontinue any use of our software, and must remove any
modules that were INJECTed into any files.
Professional users should contact us to negotiate a licensing fee.
Due to the nature of our products and the wide variance in the
number of software units, and the extent to which our support
services may be required, it is impossible to produce a uniform
table that would satisfy every user's requirements.
Small, single-PC users (especially those who work at home) will
REGISTER.DOC (cont) page 5
generally be charged the private home user registration fee of $25
per calendar year. We do give substantial discounts for more than
one PC at a given site. Contact us.
DISTRIBUTION STUFF
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
ALL USERS:
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
All users and evaluators of this program are free to distribute
this entire package to anyone else, subject to all provisions in
this document. You are required to distribute all of the files
in this package without alteration, except for the possible addi-
tion of a FILE_ID.DIZ file that contains a short description of
the contents of the archive.
BBSes:
▀▀▀▀▀▀
If you operate a BBS or on-line service, you may include a separ-
ate text file with this package that advertises your service; such
an advertisement must not make any mention of any other software
product or service not owned, produced, or provided by ARF Enter-
prises. You may, however, make reference to the brand of BBS
software used by your service.
SHAREWARE DISTRIBUTORS:
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
If you distribute Shareware for a fee, you have our permission to
distribute this program for a fee not to exceed $10.00 exclusive
of handling, shipping and mailing costs, and you must make it
clear to those who obtain the package from you that payment of
your fee DOES NOT provide registered status to the purchaser.
REGISTER.DOC (cont) page 6
If our software is bundled with other software, for example, as is
often the case with shareware distributed via CD, our package must
reside, as a unit, in a separate and unique subdirectory (or other
such file grouping), the name of which should be "ARFAV." Only
ARF products may be placed in this subdirectory or group.
WARRANTY AND DISCLAIMER STUFF
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
UNREGISTERED USERS:
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
The unregistered version of our products contain absolutely no
guarantee or warantee of any kind, including express and implied
warrantees, including but not limited to the warrantee of fitness
for a particular purpose. The user is cautioned that the unreg-
istered software may have passed through many computers before
he/she received it, and ARF Enterprises has no control over the
condition of such software by the time it reaches the user.
In return for the "no-fee" usage policy in particular, private
home users agree to use this software totally at their own risk.
REGISTERED USERS: LIMITED MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
The registered version of our software is guaranteed to be free of
programming errors and to perform as stated in this manual.
This is very important: we make no claim, and DO NOT warrant or
guarantee that our software will provide 100% protection against
any or all computer viruses (or virus-like programs). There's no
way to guarantee that.
REGISTER.DOC (cont) page 6
We expressly disclaim any liability for any damage as a direct or
indirect result of a computer virus that was not detected or
stopped by our software.
The rest of the guarantee is simple: if you're not happy, you can
cancel your registration and get your money back as follows:
FOR THE FIRST 30 DAYS AFTER REGISTRATION, YOU MAY CANCEL
YOUR REGISTRATION FOR ANY REASON AND RECEIVE A FULL REFUND
OF THE FEE, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
FOR THE FIRST 90 DAYS AFTER REGISTRATION, YOU MAY CANCEL
YOUR REGISTRATION AND RECEIVE A FULL REFUND OF THE FEE,
PROVIDED, HOWEVER, THAT YOU HAVE NOT UTILIZED OUR SUPPORT
SERVICES.
IN EITHER CASE, SHIPPING AND HANDLING CHARGES ARE NOT
REFUNDABLE; THE REGISTRATION FEE ONLY WILL BE REFUNDED.
IN ADDITION, YOU MUST RETURN TO US, AT YOUR EXPENSE, ANY
DISKS CONTAINING COPIES OF OUR SOFTWARE WHICH HAVE BEEN
RECEIVED BY YOU DURING THE REGISTRATION PERIOD.
HOW TO GET AHOLD OF US
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
To register: send certified funds or money order (personal checks
are OK, but require 2 weeks to clear the bank) to the address
shown below. Tell us what size disk you want (3.5" or 5-1/4").

of our stuff.
Our goal is to return all E-Mail to the above addresses within 24
hours. Stephen and I wrote these programs and are proud of them.
We have absolutely no qualms in giving you our names and personal
contact information.
How many programs do you own that tell you not only how to contact
the company, but the names of the authors of the program? Let us
hear from you, good and bad; we can't make it better unless we
know what you think!
This product was the cumulative result of one year of intensive
research, disassembly and programming. There was no "corner
cutting", nor did we use any third party libraries in our
development. (To be honest, we didn't trust them.) All of the
actual utilities were written in hand-coded Assembler for speed
and compactness; the other programs (the installation stuff) was
written in a combination of Assembler and highly-optimized C.
Thank you for trying our products!
